Nadia Jasmine (phoenixnjr) | 6 comments I have some issues regarding to the editing of the title. I am a Bangladeshi librarian. I want to add titles in translated English..which is usually stated inside the book with price in us dollar or pound. and i love to add the Bengali title in bracket as well. this can help the Bengali books to be recognized by the readers of other languages. please, consider this request and help us to let people know about the jewels of Bengali literature. please.

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Nadia, do you mean that you have some books published in Bengali which list their titles in both Bengali and English but which are written only in Bengali?

Nadia Jasmine (phoenixnjr) | 6 comments yes...it's written in bengali..i chose the language...field bengali..and gave titles in both languages...

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Hmm. I don't think we have an explicit policy for this, but my assumption would be that the translation of the title is extra information which could be added to the description of the edition but that it isn't part of the title if it isn't used anywhere on the cover. The actual title of the book in Bengali should definitely be primary, and we use the form "Title [Title in different script]" for transliterations, not for translations -- for example, the title of this book should probably be either just "একাত্তরের দিনগুলি" or, with transliteration, "একাত্তরের দিনগুলি [Ekāttarera Dinaguli]". Then "Memoirs Of the Days of Bangladesh Liberation War, 1971" can be added to the description field.

Nadia Jasmine (phoenixnjr) | 6 comments hmm. but i am asking for a change in the policy...because...ekattorer dinguli means nothing to the non bengali reader...but Memoirs Of the Days of Bangladesh Liberation War, 1971 is something that u can understand and get interested to read..besides..there is an option called language...i mention the language bengali in it...and the title in english is inside the book..on page 2 or 3..please...can u contact someone who is in charge...to change the policy ...for betterment...it will help us to bring more readers to the bengali literature...:(

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments But someone who can't read Bengali isn't going to be able to read that edition anyway. Wouldn't it make more sense to concentrate on promoting editions of that book which are actually translated into English, like this edition (Of Blood And Fire: The Untold Story Of Bangladesh's War Of Independence), or other languages?

And in any case, we do need to catalog the actual title of the edition, because the primary purpose of Goodreads is cataloging, not promotion. একাত্তরের দিনগুলি definitely needs to be shown in the title field of that edition whether or not the translation is also provided.

If you'd like to open this up as a policy discussion, at the top of this thread click "edit" next to the thread title and select "Policies & Practices" instead of "Book Issues" -- this will attract the attention of more librarians who can make a decision. You might also want to change the title of the thread from "title" to something like "displaying titles in translation: policy change?" to make the question clearer.
