Darren (dazburns) | 2169 comments I like having several books on the go at once, of various styles/lengths and for various moods/times of day etc
and also to take "breathers" to let a few chapters "sink in" on one book while I swap to another.
I do try to finish most books off towards the end of each month though, before launching into another set! :oD

message 2102: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I never liked having more than one book going at a time, but this has changed in the past year or two. I mostly read one novel and one non-fiction book, sometimes I may add a collection of short stories, too. Very rarely do I read two novels at the same time, I feel like I can't concentrate on the plot. However, it's happened sometimes, for example when reading very long books as a group read along several months.

message 2103: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 2200 comments I always have several books going at once. Usually one or two books on religion and a few classics. Depends on my frame of mind which one I pick up and read. Before joining Goodreads, I use to read only one book. Times change I guess but in a good way! 😊

message 2104: by Melanti (new)

Melanti | 1894 comments I almost always have multiple books going at once!

I generally have one book that is meant to be read in bits and pieces - such as an anthology of fairly short stories or poetry.

Then I'll have a couple more going that I can switch between depending on mood. Especially when something I'm reading takes a lot of concentration, it's good to have other books to switch over to when I'm not in the mood nor not in an environment where concentrating is possible.

I always try to finish off everything I can by the end of the year so I can start off the new year with a clean slate, but generally by August or September I've managed to get a dozen or so partially read books on my Currently Reading list.

message 2105: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1568 comments At the end of last year I had 0 books listed as currently reading, for about five minutes. It was a distinctly odd feeling during those five minutes.

message 2106: by Christine (new)

Christine | 971 comments I usually have two or occasionally three books in progress, all in different formats. Most of the time I have one audio book and one Kindle book going, and every now and then I read an actual paper book as well.

Same here. I didn't know that purple is the official color of International Women's Day (http://fortune.com/2018/03/07/interna...). I've got to search my closet for something to wear to work tomorrow. The prospects are not good.

message 2109: by George P. (new)

George P. | 422 comments I usually have about 4 books going, mostly novels, occasionally a nonfiction or short stories. If I get up to five or six at once I feel kind of pressured to read more than usual.
I usually have an audiobook on cds in the car. I have no difficulty reading several novels at a time- after a paragraph or so the story comes back to me. I like to spread out how far I am in each so that about weekly I finish one and start a new one. With a short novel I read a lot less pages per week than for a long one so that they each take me about a month. Occasionally, usually because I have one I can't renew at the library, I'll read it faster and jump ahead of others started earlier.
Terris said " I make up schedule of how many pages I need to read per day of each of them to finish in a timely manner (weirdly, I kind of like the planning)". I do much the same only I plan what % of each book to read in the next day or 2, generally reading from 3 books each day. If I read a total of about 14% each day it makes a book a week. I don't always stick to the plan exactly though, but mostly, and having daily and weekly goals helps me get more read.

Erin Green | 158 comments Thank you for answering and sharing - you've made me feel a little less guilty for my multi book habit.

One nice thing about 'multi book' reading is when I near the end of several at about the same time my goodreads challenge lunges forward :-)

message 2112: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1568 comments That is so true, Erin. 🤗

message 2113: by Nente (new)

Nente | 746 comments This is just to say hello after an absence. I think I've been off Goodreads since December, and I haven't read a single new page, let alone book, for all that time: strictly rereads, going through entire Austen and Aubrey/Maturin series again. Can't think what's come over me - I'm not in the best form physically, but nothing really happened to explain the reading slump.
Hopefully I'm back now, but will perhaps abstain from list-making, challenges, and everything that would in any way "force" my reading choices - I don't want to end up back in the slump!
I also have to say sorry: I was one of the people to vote for Ulysses, but definitely won't be on board with reading it this time...

Glad to see you back, Nente! Good idea to let the right books come to you. Spring is coming ...

Nente, I missed you! Just enjoy reading again if you can -- and I also voted for Ulysses, but ended up abandoning it. Maybe later in life?

message 2117: by Nente (new)

Nente | 746 comments Thank you guys =) I believe Nabokov will finally motivate me to get to Ulysses, only not just yet. We'll have a whole lot of latecomers in that thread, I'm sure.

Sad day -- Rushed our puppy to the emergency vet tonight. She broke her front leg -- both radius and ulna.

message 2128: by Brina (new)

Brina I am glad that your puppy is doing better, Katy. We just adopted two kittens in the last month and I would hate to think about them being sick or hurt. Anyway, just coming here to say hello. Various factors have worked against me and I haven't read anything in the last month. Last month was almost as tricky. I have opted out of every challenge I entered on goodreads this year and have filed books for later reading. I have April 9 circled as the day I can start reading again and am looking forward to it. In the mean time I am excited about the books in the polls here and have been following the group's happenings.

message 2133: by Martha (new)

Martha | 12 comments Hi everyone. I have a question about this new Goodreads format (probably about 3 years old by now). When the format first changed it turned me off to coming on here. Now I only go on to add my books and my ratings. I get so dizzy with all the advertisements. Does anyone else feel this way? And, it has gotten worse! I thought maybe it would flop and change back to the good ole format of 2013. I am serious - it is just Mass Advertising. Very Sad.

message 2134: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1568 comments I have gotten very good at tuning out the advertising, but I agree that it is irksome at times.

message 2135: by Martha (last edited Apr 04, 2018 08:38PM) (new)

Martha | 12 comments I do have a work-around to only see the updates- blocking the flashing Ads - so that does help, but I wondered how others feel about it all. Thank you for your input!

message 2136: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) Goodreads has been selling itself out since Amazon took over. The cheek of the ads these days makes me think it'll try to start censoring reviews again.

message 2137: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments To be honest I've hated every change over the past few years, but I'm on here so much that I get used to it and hardly notice any more. Ads on every platform annoy me, especially when they're trying to sell me the exact same thing I've just bought, at least use some initiative and show me something slightly different!

message 2138: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 1895 comments I barely notice the ads since they are ubiquitous on every website. As long as an ad with audio doesn't start playing automatically, I am able to tune them out pretty well. Those kinds are probably next though. Using the app rather than the desktop website certainly helps.

I use adblock plus. It blocks out every single ad there is, including pop-ups. You should try it, both of you. The resulting browsing experience is very smooth.

message 2140: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 2200 comments I'm with Pink on this one. I've learned to ignore the ads.

I just use this page:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic

The official home page is far to busy for my tastes. If I want to read updates, I use the app o the phone, or wait for the daily email with reviews to show up.

Melanti | 1894 comments Luffy wrote: "I use adblock plus. It blocks out every single ad there is, including pop-ups. You should try it, both of you. The resulting browsing experience is very smooth. ..."

It doesn't block out all the ads on Goodreads though. There's still the Goodreads Recommends (sponsored posts) and Goodreads Blog and Recommendations. It even cuts off people's reviews after a couple of lines so that it can show the cover and blurb. It's a really awful format.

message 2143: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5487 comments I was doing okay ignoring the ads until they (just a few days ago?) started with the huge banner add on the book pages. That has me fuming. Every time I look up a book I'm accosted with this thing, and just get a peak at the book I wanted to read about, and have to scroll down to read about the book and reviews. They've shrunk the content on that page to make room for the big add at the top and sides. It may just be the desktop version, but still ... argh.

Agree!! I used to come to Goodreads to relax. No More. My blood pressure rises every time I pop on. Not a relaxing experience as it once was.

message 2145: by Renee (new)

Renee | 727 comments I guess I've just become used to the ads. The ones on the side don't really bother me much, but I agree that the banner one at the top is a little annoying when looking at a book. I'm just glad they don't have ads that pop up in the middle of the screen when you're on the website, because those are the ones that really annoy me.

message 2146: by Melanti (new)

Melanti | 1894 comments Yeah, they do that every once in awhile. I hate those huge banner ads too. I saw several complaints in the feedback group about it.

I am used to it too.You will get used to the above thing too. Most websites seems to have yoo many ads these days.I hate those ads in youtube that prevent one from viewing the screen fully..there at the end of the screen.
And those pop up ads seriously annoy me.

message 2148: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) I make a habit of not giving into the boiling frog methodology, whatever the platform. We'll see how far GR pushes it before something breaks.

message 2149: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hmm I havent noticed any new ads across the top, maybe because I use my phone to access the internet, it might show up differently. I don't use the app, it's not very user friendly for group participation, so I'd rather a fix to improve that!

message 2150: by siriusedward (last edited Apr 06, 2018 12:03PM) (new)
