Joyce I am reading Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken.
It is the second book in The Darkest Minds series.

message 2: by Joyce (last edited Jan 08, 2014 08:48PM) (new)

Joyce I am reading Sentinel (Covenant, #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout. https://www.goodreads.com/book/photo/... It is the last in the series so far, and I just started it.

Next I will probably read The Winter Sea (Slains, #1) and The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley, Storm front by Jim Butcher (because I decided I wanted to read the series), or Tricked (the 4th book in Iron Druid series) by Kevin Hearne. I really like the Iron Druid series, which has a good balance of drama and humor.

I liked it. A real tear jerker! :) prepare the tissues. Quick read...only took me a few hours.

Joyce I just started Storm Front by Jim Butcher. I want to read the whole series, but I think I'll spread it out over the year. I am just reading this till I can go to the library and pick up Niel Gaimman's book Ocean at the End of the Lane.

message 7: by Claudia (new)

Claudia Lacoskie | 12 comments I just downloaded Ocean hope it is good.

What is the plot on the series? What genre? I'm always looking for a new series.

Joyce Claudia wrote: "Joyce wrote: "I just started Storm Front by Jim Butcher. I want to read the whole series, but I think I'll spread it out over the year. I am just reading this till I can go to the library and pick ..."

Jim Butcher writes the Dresden Files. Harry Dresden is a wizard for hire in Chicago. There are 14 books all together, and the 14th won the Goodreads 2013 Choice Award for best Paranormal Fantasy. It is OK, and I don't know if I will continue with the series.

I really like the Iron Druid Series by Kevin Hearne if you like Paranormal Fantasy. I have read three of them so far and intend to finish the series. I think there are three more and the last book due to come out this year.

I just finished the Covenant series by Jennifer Armentrout. It was really good! I cried at the end. :) The first book started out sort of like Vampire Academy(but daemons are the bad guys - sort of like vampires), but went off in a completely different direction. There were 5 books and a short story.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare was a really good series too! I liked the characters a lot. A few of them were pretty funny. My favorite series that I read lately was Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. The last book Clockwork Princess holds my favorite book category right now. These two series go together in that Infernal Devices precedes The Mortal Instruments in time.

The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews is very good -paranormal. The series just got better and better. The titles sounds stupid (Magic Bites, Magic Burns), but the books are good and fun. Her world is interesting, where magic and technology can't exist at the same time, so when the magic is up, technology doesn't work. When the magic falls, technology works. I have read all of these so far.

The Darkest Minds, the Raven Cycle, Bloodlines and Throne of Glass are good YA Science Fiction/Fantasy series. Though there are only a couple of books in each series - except for Bloodlines which has 3. Bloodlines is a spin off of the popular Vampire Academy series, so you might want to read that first.

Kay, also in this bookclub, wanted to read something else, so she is going to read (I think) the Iron Druid and or Written in Red by Anne Bishop with me. You are welcome to join us. You can follow the discussion under Bookclub #14, although we should probably discuss it in another category, or here in What Are You Currently Reading.

What about you, what series have you enjoyed lately?

message 10: by Joyce (new)

Joyce I just started The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

message 11: by Joyce (new)

Joyce The Ocean at the End of the Lane was wonderful. I'm now reading The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley.

Joyce Claudia wrote: "Almost finished with Ocean...had to work all weekend so could not read a lot. So far so good...."

I liked it a lot. For me it was one of those books that leave me feeling good with nostalgic childhood memories.

message 14: by Claudia (new)

Claudia Lacoskie | 12 comments Finished Ocean at the End of the Lane. Reminded me of going home, you half remember events and memories fade. Happy...warm fuzzy feeling. Starting on Nora Roberts The Dark Witch. Hope to go to Chamberlin Bookmine to get some new reads. Downloads are costing me to much...

message 15: by Joyce (last edited Jan 17, 2014 10:15AM) (new)

Joyce I don't think I've read any Nora Roberts' books. She has written quite a few though. The Dark Witch sounds like a good book.

I had to put up The Winter Sea because my eyes were glazing over... maybe because it is late? I picked up the newest Anna Strong book by Jeanne C. Stein called Blood Bond https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... and I was fine. I'll try to get back to The Winter Sea tomorrow night. :)

message 16: by Joyce (last edited Jan 17, 2014 10:14AM) (new)

Joyce Just finished Blood Bond. It was OK - not quite as good as the others.

Now I am reading Anne Bishop's book Written in Red. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

message 17: by Joyce (last edited Feb 11, 2014 06:56AM) (new)

Joyce So Claudia, what are you reading now? Since you liked The Fault in our Stars and The Dark Witch, I requested them from the library, but they are pretty popular, so it will be a while before I can get them. Since Written in Red (which was really good), I read Tricked by Kevin Hearne, The Gollum & the Jinni (which was beautifully worded, but went on and on), The Scorpio Races, The Selection, and the Elite. I didn't think I would like the latter, but I can honestly say that I can't wait to read the last book, One?, that comes out in May. I am currently reading The Promise of Blood, which I can't seem to finish because it is incredibly long. I am also reading Insurgent, then The Storyteller.

message 18: by Claudia (new)

Claudia Lacoskie | 12 comments Haven't been able to get some "me time" to read lately. I have two books I want to start reading... Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs and Monday Mourning by Kathy Reichs. I am flying to San Diego for a business conference, so I know I will definitely finish them on that long flight. lol

I am getting to the end of Dark Witch. It is a decent book. I like books with magic and paranormal things. I hadn't read anything of hers yet. She has written a ton of books!

Hi Spencer,
How do you like The Book Thief so far? I've read mixed reviews. I have this on my TBR list. My reading time will have to be shared with yard work now :( lol.

Kay Burns | 15 comments I started on the Anne Bishop book, but have put it down. GREAT GRAND BABIES are in town from Oregon!!!!
I get to play Nana for about 2 weeks. woohoo!!

message 29: by Joyce (last edited Apr 04, 2014 11:08AM) (new)

Joyce Wow! Have fun with your great grand kids. I waited to have my son. He is only 16, and I doubt very much he will ever get married and have kids. You are very lucky!

My husband and I were in Oregon and California on our honeymoon. I really liked Oregon. We stayed at the Crater Lake Lodge - It had just recently been renovated or reopened.

message 30: by Joyce (new)

Joyce I finished Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop, and loved it. I'm now back to the Lunar Chronicles, #3 - Cress. I like it a lot too. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book. Think there is one more coming out. Can't wait!

message 31: by Kay (new)

Kay Burns | 15 comments I get to go to 6 Flags over Georgia next Friday. OH JOY. I ready don't do rides, so maybe I can get some reading of the Anne Bishop book in. LOL

Joyce Kay wrote: "I get to go to 6 Flags over Georgia next Friday. OH JOY. I ready don't do rides, so maybe I can get some reading of the Anne Bishop book in. LOL"

Get picks of the kids returning from their rides. I love those photos of my son. Sounds fun, but trying to read in a noisy amusement park would bring on a serious headache for me. But I guess it doesn't hurt to try. So, do you get motion sickness or are you just chicken? LOL Just teasing. (My husband gets motion sickness on rides and said he won't pay to go on a ride that will make him puke.)

I have a garage sale this weekend. I'd rather be at an amusement park trying to read. :)

message 33: by Kay (new)

Kay Burns | 15 comments I can't ride due to motion sickness. Plus I have a fear of heights. Those 2 combinations don't work out well for me. A cool front will be here Thursday so NO 90 degree weather for Friday!!!! woohoooooo! My son is also going and he has a hi tech camera vs my 35 film camera. LOL
I can turn out the noise to be able to read most times. I would like to be able to get these 2 Anne Bishop books read so I can join ya'll discussion.

message 34: by Joyce (new)

Joyce Finished End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days, #3) by Susan Ee by Susan Ee. It was excellent! Did you know that END OF DAYS, the finale to Penryn & the End of Days trilogy, hit #10 on Amazon US for all ebooks and #12 on Barnes & Noble for all books? Way to go, Susan Ee. Your books are awesome! This is pretty wild, but it is sold out in a lot of bookstores! You can still get it from Amazon, though.

Now reading Sea Glass (Glass, #2) by Maria V. Snyder . I really like the books set in Maria Snyder's world.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm currently reading Night Film by Marisha Pessl. It's so good.

message 36: by J. (new)

J. Reid (jbreid) | 3 comments Just finishing reading "That Which Other Men Cannot Do" from the Frontiers Saga written by Ryk Brown. It was a 156,000 word SciFi novel where the hero had to put everything on the line to save the Sol sector once and for all. I really enjoyed it!

Now I am back to finishing up a prequel to my first book Reversal: The Skyfire Begins.

message 37: by Mrs. Moore (last edited Jun 09, 2016 09:36PM) (new)

Mrs. Moore | 7 comments Our Books by the Beach Reading Club is reading the White Castle by Orhan Pamuk. Everyone in the Middle East reads his novels, and he won the Nobel Prize for literature. This book is about a Turkish guy who becomes a slave in Italy. His master looks exactly like him, but none of the Italians admit the resemblance. We still have two spot open in our reading group, which meets monthly in real life. If any of you local women are interested in reading fiction in a variety of genres by international authors, contact me to visit our next meeting :-)

message 38: by Rand (new)

Rand (iterate) | 6 comments Within the last month I began to alternate between two novels: Will Self's Shark and Cote Smith's Hurt People.

Very early in both. I've had mixed reactions to Will Self's books in the past but so far I like this one. Smith is new to me.

Recently I decided to stop putting aside books that turn me off early on but at the same time I dislike "forcing" myself to read a book that I don't necessarily enjoy. That being said, I am enjoying both, slowly, though I am not entirely taken by the narration which Smith uses, nor the story, really. Hurt People is a library book I picked up because of the cover. Still not sure if the title is intended as imperative or description.

message 39: by Andrew (new)

Andrew K | 1 comments About 2/3 done with Crime & Punishment. I can see why it's a literary masterpiece, although it's not entirely up my alley. I will admit that I love the writing style and how smooth it flows. Every paragraph or piece of dialogue seems to be a running sentence.

message 40: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (movingaroundguy) | 2 comments I'm currently reading Douglas Adams. I just finished Life, the Universe and Everything. Adams has a way with words that speaks to my soul and makes me laugh in ways I never thought I could. I'm about to begin So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. If anyone has any recommendations, I'll gladly take them!

message 41: by Rand (new)

Rand (iterate) | 6 comments Terry Pratchett's approach to narrative/humor is somewhat similar to Adams, imo though Adams is perhaps a tad bit more taxonomically-minded.

Love Adams, I have a panic button inked on my body :)

happy reading

as for Dostoyevsky, the narrative flow is shaped by the character's psychology. . . that book is particularly useful for understanding the philosophical "problem of evil" but then most of D's stuff wheels around that old rut.

message 42: by Mrs. Moore (new)

Mrs. Moore | 7 comments Our Books by the Beach Reading Club just finished Still Life by Louise Penny with mixed reviews from the group. Now we are reading Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf. The author got angry that young people were reading his book because he said the young would not be able to understand it. A couple of us had read it in college, so we are psyched to see if Hesse was right about the lack of insight available to our younger selves. Anyone else read Steppenwolf and revisit it in middle age?

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Currently read You by Caroline Kepnes and it's quite the thriller set from the prospective of a stalker/serial killer (written in first person) and uses 'you' when referring to the victim, thus putting the reader in the victim's perspective.

message 44: by Akina (new)

Akina | 1 comments I'm new this group and I noticed that there's been very little recent activity but I'm hoping to inject some new life into it and connect with some local readers.

I mainly read romance novels - contemporary, historical, paranormal...all of it. I rarely give books a 5 star rating but I recently gave 5 stars to Wrecking Ball by P. Dangelico. I already posted a review on GR. Also, my new favorite author is Anna Zaires. I am waiting with baited breath for Tormentor Mine to come out in November. I even pre-ordered this one. The first book in the series, Obsession Mine is off-the- charts good. The book was released in March of this year and I have reread the entire book at least 10 times in the 6 months that I have owned it. Definitely a keeper.

If you like a lot of action, I recommend the Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken. This series has more fight scenes than Game of Thrones. The same goes for the Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter. Your jaw will constantly be on the ground. No other book or series I have read has been as surprising. Every time you thing you have something figured out, you find out that something else is happening. It's The Hunger Games on steroids. Virtually every chapter has a new revelation. You will scream and yell and your jaw will ache from dropping all the time.

I'm always looking for people to recommend great books. Please let me know if you find any.

By the way, there is a new bookstore opening at The Town Center TODAY called 2nd & Charles. They buy and sell new and vintage books, cds, games, etc. I spoke to an employee last night. It looks impressive from the outside. I will check it out later this week.

Happy reading y'all!
