OH!!! How interesting!!!! Definitely putting it on my "to-read" list!!

Kris (My Novelesque Life) (mynovelesquelife) Hi my name is Kris and I am from Vancouver (Canada). I love reading, writing, listening to all kinds of music, watching classic films and going to the Opera and other theatre.

I fell in love with the Tudors because of Elizabeth I and love both Cate Blanchette and Bette Davis portrayals of her.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments Have you seen Glenda Jackson's Elizabeth? That's my favorite of the lot.

Kris (My Novelesque Life) (mynovelesquelife) I haven't but I will now! Thanks Susanna

Pamela (chevywrangler) | 7 comments The book that started my love of the Tudor Dynasty was Henry VIII by Margaret George. My home library is full of books on the ?udor's (not all rad yet). I do most heavy duty reading in the fall and winter. I received quite a few over my birthday which is in summer. I look forward to reading them. Even though the television series The Tudors was full of inconsistencies I never missed an episode. I think my favourite Tudor was Elizabeth !. I look forward to reading others opinions on books and new books.

Am I the only one who does not like to watch the film before reading the book?

I have been reading history and historical fiction since I was a young teen. Like many others I read a popcorn book just for a laugh or a light read. I call them popcorn books because they are quite enjoyable and don' pull me in like the history and historical fiction.

My next book to be read is The Tudors by G.F. Meyer. Any opinions on this one? No spoilers please.

Audra | 1 comments Hi, I'm a single mother (divorced) with one daughter, and I live just west of Indianapolis, Indiana. I am a Tudor-era fanatic. I really have no interest in any other period of history! There are shelves and shelves of Tudor-related books in my house, all of which I've read... and I'm looking for more! My daughter thinks I'm obsessed with Anne Boleyn, which I'll admit, is probably true. :) Glad to join the group!

message 358: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1 comments Hi, I am 30 years old, married with 2 daughters and live in Connecticut. I love English history! I have been reading a lot of historical fiction right now and am having a hard time switching back to other types of books. I'm always looking for new books to read, so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. So happy to join this group!

message 359: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (chevywrangler) | 7 comments Hi again, I just joined the group a few days ago and have been reading all your posts and getting ideas for my next reads. I am married 40 years, am sixty and live in Toronto, Canada. I love history, always have. Have been to England twice and am going again in the spring. I read anything and everything on the Tudor's as well as watch all the movies. Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth was superb and I have watched it many times.

One person wrote in about a book called The Mad Nun of Kent. I neglected to write down the author. I cannot find the book anywhere and would love to read it. Can anyone tell me more about this book please. Cheers.

Amanda Faryar I'm Amanda, 23, and from NJ USA. I LOVE Tudor history. For some reason I was always fascinated with England and English history. My mom thinks I was royalty in a past life haha.

I got interested in Tudor history specifically when The Tudors came out on HBO. My friend and I watched every single episode to the point where we would say things in that old fashion British tongue!

I've seen a few movies and TV shows based on Tudor history but I love reading the books instead. I got a massive brick of a book on Tudor history I'm so excited to read.

King Henry VIII was a mean horny fatty!

Miss Melly | 8 comments Hi everyone,
My name is Melissa - I'm 40ish and I live in Perth, Australia. I'm a huge historical fiction fan (the Tudors are my fav) and I read everything I can get my hands on.
Hey Amanda from NJ - Henry wasn't always a fatty (he did an Elvis and got fat later) - it's his little beady eyes that I don't like!

Jo | 2 comments Hello everyone! I'm so happy to have found this group. I'd rather read than do anything else...much to my husband's dismay. Love anything Tudor, Russian or Victorian. Looking forward to finding some new books and making some new online friends...thanks for having me.

message 363: by Desirae (new)

Desirae | 2 comments I am eighteen and just started my first year of college. I absolutely love all history but truly have a obsession with Tudor England. Who needs Jersey Shore and all the rest of those "Reality Shows" when you can get even better true life drama straight from history???

message 364: by Jo (new)

Jo | 2 comments Amen to that, Desirae!

message 365: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 31 comments Hello! My name is Ashley, and I'm addicted to history in general, but one of my favorite eras in Tudor England. It's nice to finally find a group that loves this time period as much as I do. Some of my first Tudor books I read were by Philippa Gregory, and enjoyed them immensly. I hope to get some help in finding more books to read concerning this entire family/era :)

message 366: by NayNay (new)

NayNay I agree, I love everything Tudor!!!!

message 367: by Kim (new)

Kim (genrequeen) Hi I'm Kim, and I live in Indiana. I love reading books on the Tudors, and I also enjoy reading about the French royalty and Egyptian history.

message 368: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Bilyeau | 21 comments Hi, I'm Nancy. My Tudor addiction started early, I was in elementary school and watched "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" and "Elizabeth R" with my parents. In the movie theaters there were "Anne of a Thousand Days" and "Mary, Queen of Scots." I tore through historical fiction by Norah Lofts, Jean Plaidy, Anya Seton, and Daphne du Maurier (and later, classical novels by Mary Renault and Robert Graves). After years of working in the magazine business and having two kids (one of them on the autistic spectrum) I managed to write my own novel. And yes, it is set in the Tudor era. It's a thriller called "The Crown." But whether you read it or not, or like it or not, I would love to participate in Tudor discussions here. Because it's something I have given up fighting! I'll be interested in the 16th century forever.

message 369: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (chevywrangler) | 7 comments Hi Nancy: I will have to read The Crown over Christmas holidays. I have read and watched from this period in history.

I wonder how many of us believe we lived a previous lifetime in that time period. Not as royalty of course or everyone would be Anne Boelyn or Catherine Parr. When I went to England it was all so familiar. I felt at home. I had to go back and did the next year. Nope I am not a nutter. Just speculating.

Hi Joann! I'm new to this group...and new to Goodreads in general. I would just *love* to read your spoof on the 6 wives. Is it published and if so under what last name may I find it?

Hi Nancy! I have Jean Plaidy saved on my "to-read" thanks entirely to this group for giving me the heads up on this woman's existence. BTW I would like to read your book too. Is it based on real life characters from the Tudor era (I mean leading protagonist) or did you take a fictional character(s) and interweave them among the historical cast?

Thanks Margaret! The book is called Six of One, published under my name, JoAnn Spears. It's out in paperback on Amazon and will be available on Kindle over the next week or two.

Margaret I will have to wait until tax season to buy more books but when I do read yours would you mind if I message you to talk about it?

Barbara Lombard | 3 comments I've been a fan of the Tudors all my life. I remember watching the wives of Henry VIII on Masterpiece Theater when I was in high school. He had me at beheading.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments Me too! But I was six. My mother's comment on seeing that series again recently was "I can't believe I let you watch that!"

I loved it.

message 386: by Breezy (new)

Breezy | 9 comments I'm Breezy and I am a historical fiction fanatic. I only got into the Tudors this last year from Philippa Gregory's The White Queen. While I really enjoy Gregory my favorite Tudor era book is Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. I look forward to reading many many many more books on this era. I find the people absolutely fascinating, not to mention utterly impossible to keep track of. Why did the monarchy insist on using the same names over and over again? Very excited to be a part of this book club.

message 387: by Aparajita (new)

Aparajita | 7 comments Hi, I am 28, live in India and just joined Goodreads today, so my profile is not complete- I have loved history since I was 11, my passion for historical novels started with Jean Plaidy which my mom introduced me to as a teenager. I was fascinated by the Tudors always, though of late my interest has shifted to medieval England. It is not that easy getting a wide variety of historical novels here like in the UK or the US, so I don't get to collect as many different authors as I would like to- I also like Alison Weir- I read her non-fictional works , and then got onto her novel about Elizabeth and then started reading the one about Jane Grey. I haven't read Phillipa Gregory's Tudor works, but only the one about Margaret Beaufort, which I enjoyed, however, I think, my favourite will always be Jean Plaidy. I hereby confess that I have a HUGE fascination with Elizabeth Tudor, and will just about devour ANYTHING written drawn or filmed around and about her!
-I love history in all shapes and forms- academic works, fiction, period drama, anything as long as it is in a historical setting! I think it's my basic need to escape from immediate surroundings from time to time into what at least SEEMS like more picturesque times-at least something distant and different.

Yes, even I liked Wolf Hall, was the first time I was reading something from the point of view of Cromwell(or anybody else other than Henry VIII/Anne/Katherine). Have got Phillippa Gregory's book on Mary Queen of Scots lined up...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments It will help a lot if you read Wolf Hall if you remember that "he" is almost always Cromwell.

I found reading it in long bursts helped to get into the flow of the novel.

message 390: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 88 comments Hi! I'm Denise, and I've been interested in the Tudors since I saw The Six Wives of Henry VIII on Masterpiece Theatre when I was in junior high. I prefer historical works, such as by Alison Weir, Carolly Erickson, and others, to historical fiction. I mostly read mysteries and classics, though, which is why I have a backlog of historical books on my TBR shelf! But I've also read quite a few over the years. Weir is my favorite author in this genre. I don't know how much time I will find to get here, but I wanted to join because it seems like a great group, and it will be fun to chat from time to time about a subject that I am very interested in!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments I really enjoyed Wolf Hall; but it's not an easy read.

Breezy | 9 comments Susanna wrote: "I really enjoyed Wolf Hall; but it's not an easy read."

You're so right. It's not an easy read. It took a few pages to get the rythm. I think that's why I like it so much. It's a completely different style of story telling.

@Apparjita - can't wait to read Jean Plaidy. Thanks for the recommendation.

Has anyone seen Masterpiece Theater's Elizabeth I: the Virgin Queen (2005)? I found it on netflix and would love someone's opinion on their portrayal of Elizabeth.

message 393: by Aparajita (new)

Aparajita | 7 comments I think Hilary Mantel has published a sequel...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments I thinks she's supposed to be working on both a sequel to Wolf Hall and a novel about Anne Boleyn.

Silke (boekinwonderland) Hello everybody,

I am Silke, a 26 year old Human resourch worker from Antwerp, Belgium, married to my highschool sweetheart, with no childeren, but a dog as a substitut.
Before I became a HR officer, I wanted to study history. But as it goes my parents didn't approve for it. Thus was my passion for history and with that historical fiction born. Since my grandmother is English I have a soft spot for anything that has even slightly to do with British history. But to be honest the tudors have a special place in my heart all together.

Sandy Scharlow (sandy62) | 2 comments Hi! I am Sandy, I am a day care worker, married with 2 kids (20 and 30 both girls). I have always loved history and historical fiction. Love the Tudors (not the show sorry) but will pretty much read anything set before 1900ish. Victoria Holt was my first intro, who is also Jean Plaidly my freshman year in high school.

message 399: by Anne (new)

Anne (annecurrin) | 77 comments Hi Sandy!

Oh my gosh you don't like the show "The Tudors"?!!? ;-) I don't take it as gospel for the way things really happened, but I do enjoy watching it. Actually am on the 3rd season for the 2nd time. I'm just discovering Jean Plaidy. Have a few other books to read, and then will start one of her series. My local library system has nearly all her books. Quite a few available for an e-reader. Can't wait to start them!

Hope you have a good day!
Anne

Sandy Scharlow (sandy62) | 2 comments I know it is just me, maybe if atleast he was tall or taller I could get past it! I was just looking at my library and they really only have the Jean Plaidy books I already have. There are so many wonderful books out there.

Thanks - Have a good day also!
