Gregory House (greghouse) | 122 comments Hi Melanie welcome to the merry throng here in Tudor land. I must say that is quite a list, though a very worthwhile ambition. I could suggest a quick visit to my blog though that only has a small amount of information up so far, too much editing of my novels has meant less blogging unfortunately. The best set of novels overall for this period and court life, politics and machinations are the Dorothy Dunnett Lymond series. After that PF Chisholm/Patricia Finney comes a fine second. As for non fiction Treason in Tudor England by Lacy Baldwin Smith is in my opinion highly recommended in any study of the era. For real historians Elton, Starkey, Scarisbrick and Loades are all outstanding though sometimes can be stuffy, convoluted and pompous. Weir writes a lot of ‘popular histories’ and can be useful though I strongly recommend double checking all her sources and opinions. There is a range of Tudor characters she doesn’t like and looses all objectivity when recounting their ‘evidence’.
Anyway that’s the short list for a more in depth feel free to check out my book list.

Regards Greg

Gregory House (greghouse) | 122 comments To Susanna and Melanie, it certianly is generous with information I found it a few years back and constantly refer to it when writing just ot check up on a few different facts. Though it is still a good idea to double-check information.

Seb (sebalex) Hi everybody,

I'm 29 and lives in France. I'm studying English at University in France, and I've just passed my first year. I studied a bit of British history and it has aroused my interest. I've bought a book about the Tudor today; unfortuantely in French.
Anyway, I'm happy to join this group and hope to learn a lot.

Charlotte (charlotte_sometimes) | 78 comments Hi everyone,

I've made a few posts elsewhere in here, so I probably ought to introduce myself, eh? :) I've been interested in the Tudors since I was around 14 or so and first saw a film called "Lady Jane" about Lady Jane Grey. That was 22 years ago (YIKES!).

I've been raiding libraries and bookstores ever since, reading everything I can get my hands on about this passionate, horrifically dysfunctional family. I like reading about Anne B. and Elizabeth I in particular because I find them both to be such fascinating women.

However, I've read quite a bit about all of Henry's wives and I have to say I pity every single one of them! What a nightmare!

At any rate, nice to meet you all! :)

message 313: by Sandie (new)

Sandie Nice to meet you Amanda! I'm particularly interested in Anne B. and Elizabeth I as well - and I have to agree with you about being married to Henry. That would have been a most difficult and scary time back then. I love this time period most of all though. happy reading!

Martin Belcher (martinbelcher) | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm Martin, I live in Andover, England, I'm a big fan of Tudor history, read quite a number of books by Alison Weir, Phillipa Gregory and David Starkey. Visited Hampton Court Palace last year, it was absolutely amazing, I'm hoping to get to the Tower of London some time this year, I think I might leave it until the Autumn when the peak tourist season has passed. I have my very old fashioned history teacher, Miss Loxton to thank for my interest in the Tudors and British Monarchy. Look forward to contributing to the group. All the best. Martin.

message 316: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (kfranz) | 1 comments I absolutely LOVE reading books about the Tudors! My very first book was Katherine by Anya Seton, I was hooked! I have also read books by Alison Weir, Phillipa Gregory and G. J. Meyer. I went to a Phillipa Gregory book signing/lecture that lasted 2 hours. I REALLY enjoyed meeting her, hearing how she approaches her subjects, and the research involved. She was truly a pleasure to see. She also has that very dry, very English sense of humor( which I love.) I realize that her books are not always historically accurate BUT her books are fun to read... I'm looking forward to meeting others in the group, as well as reading all the newly discovered books I see on the shelves. Cheers to your all.

Aly (Alygator) | 854 comments Hello, new comers!!! It's great to see some new "faces" in the group! I had to giggle and comment about how Sandie and Amanda think that being married to Henry. I'm one of the very few Henry sympathizers in the group, and find him just as fascinating as any of his wives. Looking forward to talking with y'all!

message 318: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Hello all - I'm Jessica and new to the group. While I love all history, I have a special love for Tudor history, as well as The War of the Roses. I have delighted in facts and stories about the main "characters" (Henry, Anne, Elizabeth I)- but also in the peripheral folks that helped shape history. I'm so glad to see that my obsession is not uncommon! My most current fixation has been Cecily Neville, but like Katherine Swynford, there is pitifully little that survives, and I love to fact check during/after a novel.

Thanks for having me!

Hi Melanie - I often make copies of the bibliographies of the historical fiction I like most, and I also make use of tudorhistory.org and other websites. I'm not positive about the perfect integrity of his books - but try David Gressy.

Shari Larsen | 8 comments Hello!
I'm Shari, and I live in Big Rapids, MI, with two spoiled indoor cats who are my papers.

I no longer work, because of stage IV breast cancer. I'm going through chemo right now, and I always have a book or a Kindle with me when I have a doctor appointment or a treatment. I have always loved reading, and it's something that has helped me get through some tough times.

I love fiction, especially historical fiction, Tudor Era is my favorite.

message 322: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 854 comments Welcome, Shari!!!

OOf, breast cancer is intense. I'm sorry you have to go through that. I hope that we can take your mind off of that a little bit by discussing Tudor things with you!

message 323: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (titannh27) | 2 comments Hi There!
I am new here but very excited about sharing with other Tudor enthusiasts. I started reading historical fiction when I was about 13 and the kings and queens of England, especially the Tudors, have always been my favorite topic. I think Jean Plaidy is the first author that I read anything Tudor from. Anyway, so glad to be here.

Amy Fanning (rkjunkie07) Hi everyone!

I'm new to the group but I've loved reading and learning about Tudor England ever since I started reading about it in middle school. I'm currently a grad student for library science and I love to read in general. History is definitely one of my top favorite genres to read. I can't wait to contribute to the group. =D

Michele Kallio (michelekallio) | 36 comments Hello, my name is Michele and have been fascinated by Henry and his wives since I was a teenager. For almost fifty years I have read almost anyhting I could get my hands on concerning Henry and his wives. I am particularly interested in Anne Boleyn. I recently came across a listing in the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography for George Boleyn's son, George, who became dean of Lichfield Cathedral. I thought his marriage to Jane Parker was barren...could this George be illegitimate? Anyone else have any info regarding this man?

message 329: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (robynpat) | 2 comments Hello, I have been lurking for a bit so I thought I should finally introduce myself. I am a 43 year old married woman with no children. I am a Michigander who lives in Houston Texas with my Texas-born husband. I have a passion for all things British especially the Tudor period. Like Amanda, my first interest was Lady Jane Grey. I have devoured everything I can find on her. I have been hooked every since. I am looking forward to book recommendations and discussions about the Tudor period.

message 330: by Michele (new)

Michele Kallio (michelekallio) | 36 comments Robyn, have you read Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir, while it is a novelization of Lady Jane Grey's life it is very well done. Also I would highly recommend 'The Sisters who would be Queen" by Leandra De Lisle copyright 2008. This is not a novel and is a extremely well put together and throughly enoyable read.

message 331: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1 comments Hey! I am Amanda, I'm 23 and live in Ontario, Canada. Completely fasinated by the Tudor time frame, especially after watching the show "The Tudors" (which I now proudly own the complete series). Growing up was not much of a reader, but was picking up a few last things before a trip to NYC and the book "Secrets of the Tudor Court: Between two Queens" randomly caught my eye, figured I would give it a shot on the flight down. Fell in love with it and ended up picking up The Boleyn Inheritance and Forever queen in NYC for the flight home. Look forward to book recommendations and discussions!

Michele Kallio (michelekallio) | 36 comments Hi Amanda, there are lots of great books out there. One of the best biographies on Anne boleyn is Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives

Yes, I am a huge Alison Weir fan and I really enjoyed this fictionalized view of Lady Jane Grey's life. Thank you for the recommendation.

Miss Dotty (MissDotty) | 1 comments Wow what a great find, fellow Tudor lovers! I have had a love for history since being at school and we seemed to do the Tudors a lot! My undergraduate degree was in History and luckily we covered some of the Tudor period. I am now a primary school teacher and have taught the Tudors nearly every year since becoming a teacher:)

Sarah Morris (thetudortravelguide) Hi, my name is Sarah Morris and I am half way through writing my first historical fiction novel (provisionally called 'Le Temps Viendra- a novel of Anne Boleyn'). It has been a remarkable experience so far, to transport myself into the shoes of a woman who has been my heroine since childhood. Up until the beginning of this year, few people knew about my secret passion for all things Tudor. Since I have 'come out' - to the great surprise of many of my friends - I have met some wonderful new people and had some amazing experiences as part of my research. I am documenting my journey on my Facebook Page: http://on.fb.me/oKlwZI (Le Temps Viendra: A novel of Anne Boleyn). I look forward to meeting some new friends here to. Sarah

Ruth Elizabeth | 8 comments Hello - lovely to find you...I spent 8 years writing 'Mistress Blanche, Queen Elizabeth I's Confidante' because I checked and double-checked everything. I couldn't understand why no-one had found this information before. Lady Troy brought up Elizabeth and Edward, giving them a stable childhood. Blanche Parry was with Elizabeth for 56 years and was at the centre of the Court. Now we have produced a limited edition Calendar with beautiful pictures + detailed text making it a mini-book - called 'Blanche Parry & Queen Elizabeth I'.
See: www.blancheparry.com
If you like the Tudors you will like this - all proceeds go to Blanche's family Church.

Michele Kallio (michelekallio) | 36 comments Welcome to the group Ellen. Your book sounds very interesting. Blanche Perry was a very interesting character and one that historians have missed. I am glad you didn't. I will look for your book.

message 348: by Amy (new)

Amy (ashimmel) | 4 comments Hi Everyone, My name is Amy and I live in Michigan. I have been interested in all things Tudor for quite awhile now, so I was thrilled to find people who share my interest. My family totally doesn't get how I can read so many books about the same era. I am particularly interested in Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Anne Boleyn. I look forward to learning new things and getting book recommendations, etc. Thanks.

message 349: by Li (new)

Li (mssroos) Hi everyone! I´m Lianne, 23 and I´m from Rotterdam (Holland). I love history but the biggest part of that love goes to the middle ages especially the Tudors. A while ago I started reading The White Queen from Philippa Gregory which got me into her Tudor serie and I just wanted to know more and more and more about the Tudors. I wanna read so much more about it and the only books I've read are from Philippa Gregory and a book about Katherine Howard from Suzannah Dunn. So I would love to know what other books are great to read (Any nice series or movies are welcome as well :D)

Mandy | 26 comments Hello, Just joined the group. I am English but now live in Alaska. Like many other people I was introduced to Tudor history at school, followed by the works of Jean Plaidy. I haven't thought about reading Tudor novels recently but since joining Goodreads I have the urge again! I am also battling 1001 books to read before you die list and trying to keep up with the Goodreads Giveaways.
