I've grown tired of this Langdon-formula that Brown uses for all his books.

-Something creepy and mysterious happens at prologue
-Langdon is minding his business when he gets called
-Travels to the place when the mysterious has happened
-Meets a not-friendly character but good, also a friendly character but not good
-Also meets a girl, who somehow is related to the thing that happened in the prologue
-Solves the mystery along with the girl
-Deus ex machina appears, reveals everything (somehow linked with the girl also)
-They have sex

This made me drop "The Lost Symbol"at about 60% because it felt so boring and so repetitive.
Does Inferno follow this formula (if so Im not gonna buy it) or is it different

Ha ha! at least they don't have sex!
Also did you catch that he stole you point #4 from Tolkien "an agent of the enemy would look fairer and seem fouler".

Have read the book, and I'll say this: only mysterious and creepy situation is Langdon's dream. Langdon is already in the situation when first brought up. mysterious travels with him throughout the novel. good girl is good and bad girl is bad. girl is related to the story in general. mystery is not solved. no Deus ex machine (I don't think). no sex. It is different.

Sometimes formulas work, sometimes they don't.

I used to hate "formulaic" books, until I stumbled upon one that I LOVED Kate Morton.

I agree with your take on the Langdon Formula and I found that book 4 was just the "same old same old".

However, if you love the "same old same old", then this book won't dissapoint.

You forgot to add, he fills 30% of his Langdon books with tourist guide type paragraphs.

How come a man starts an action adventure just the day after he was shot from head? I loved Da vinci code and somehow Angels and Demons but I personally do not recommend the other books of the author including Inferno. Real frustration!

The design of the adventure is same as the previous books. At some places it feels as if the situations Langdon is in are repetitive. But, it has a darker theme as compared to them. Nevertheless, Mr. Brown succeeds in maintaining the thrill and suspense through the book.

I love all of Dan Browns Books with Robert Langdon, however, as a college professor he makes some incredible dumb decisions when answering his phone late at night and then leave the US. LOL!

Inferno is a formula book, with a bout of amnesia thrown in for good measure. That being said, I enjoyed it as I have all of Brown's books -- undoubtedly due to the wonderful references in Florence, Istanbul and more. In that regard, Brown's books are a virtual travelogue.

Readers apparently enjoyed Inferno. It was the #1 best-selling book of 2013. http://www.tedscofield.com/blog-posts...

Exactly!!! Dan Brown instills the same repetitive pattern in all his books...It has been working for him until now.... He managed to keep "THE INFERNO" interesting despite the fact that it reminded his older books...!!!

But I guess to sustain himself in the writing business,he needs to re-invent atleast the way the plot starts and ends!!!

I have read and enjoyed all of Dan Brown's books. My favorite is Digital Fortress (which is not in the Robert Langdon series). As for the Langdon series, yes they are all the same, they are enjoyable on their own, but if you read all of them, you do notice and catch the similarities and the "boring-ness". I think I would have much more enjoyed this book if he referred to the other "journeys" he has been on in Paris, Rome, Washington, D.C. and the other cities and towns in between. I feel like if a "real" person were to experience these events, there would be flashbacks to "well this happened when i was..." or at least memories of such.

A simple answer to the original question posted - yes it follows the same formula so if you are against that, it is not worth your time, however if you can look past the formula in the novel, it is an intense journey to go on with Langdon.

Yes, this book follows the Brown Formula to the T. But I'll say this though. Inferno will be more remembered for the issue it deals with, because it is a very real one!! And the implications of the ending stayed with me for days.

well yes i can say almost so,

but even though, in this novel he used a new issue and a new idea

i will strongly recommend this book " ONLY " to open eyes for this issue

This book was really boring on the whole. ....but only the ending was good. I am really very disappointed!
But I think this is the first dan brown book that has some kind of a message like about the over population issue.other wise all the dan brown's books are devoid of any kind of message! Especially the lost symbol! Huh! It was such a mess!
Especially the end chapters.....u just don't understand what the author actually wants to convey after all those pages! !!
I think angels and demons was dan brown's best book! I don't think he will ever be able to write something like that again.
And yes I do agree that Robert Langdon is all so same after all these years! ! And I really wonder how his"collector edition mickey mouse watch " still continues to work wonderfully after 4 decades!
But even after all these shortcomings dan brown is a great author! There is something in his writing that kept me waiting for inferno even after reading the lost symbol!
I think he makes us feel as if we have known all his characters for long!

And as for inferno, on the whole I would give it 3 stars.
The book gets really boring in the middle and I felt like dumping it. .....but then in the last 10 chapters the message is conveyed impressively. .....it really makes us think about the future!
What I like the most about brown is that he has an amazing ability to blend cutting edge technology and centuries old art and history together.like antimatter and illuminati in Angels and demons
Genetics and dante in inferno! !!
Well at last I would like to say that im eagerly waiting for dan brown's next read. .....thats it!!!!

Well. ...it's totally like other Robert Langdon books actually is more boring than any Robert Langdon books. .....but now after I have read the lost symbol. ....I think inferno is a bit better but angels and demons is the best no matter what!
