Sounds like a Georgette Heyer book I've read in the past but I can't remember which one.

Heyer has a short story with a similar theme Pistols for Two is I believe the collection that it appears in. But it's not an exact match, still, you'll enjoy the stories in this book Pinky if you liked the one you are describing. Actually, you'll probably like all of her books, she's called "The Mother of Regency Romance".
