Elaine | 2001 comments I'm just curious to know whether people here write their names in their books and what else if anything? I usually write my full name and the date I bought the book and if it's relevant, where I bought it from. Especially if it was whilst on holiday somewhere. Some of my friends think it's odd that I do that but I've got a feeling many of you here would be able to relate.

That sounds like a nice idea but I was taught never to write in a book ever so I just can't!!!

message 3: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments That's interesting Phrynne. Funny how we all have different things we find acceptable. Although I would never fold pages, I do like writing messages if I'm giving books to friends or family and I like for them to write in my books. Also if I'm lending my books I almost always make sure my name is in it!!!

I know and I would like to - but I just can't! I don't fold them either, or break the spines. And I hate it when library books have been attacked by previous users.

I don't Elaine, though I wish I had from the start. Books I have from when I was young would be great NOW if I knew when I received them, where from and when. I'd love the date in them:)

message 6: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments That's fair enough, Phrynne. Your books your rules. And yes I agree with you , library books can be quite frustrating sometimes. I was reading one last night on the "change"....shhhh!!! And realised someone had torn out a whole chapter!!! How inconsiderate, not to mention unlawful.

I must admit it's nice to be able to look back and see who gave you a book or when and where it was bought. Although I did go through a couple of years of not writing anything in my books, as I was told it was too controlling. But I started doing it again recently and I think I'll continue with it.

If you want to donate your books later to Lifeline or Salvos or something, you can white-out the details. I did that with a few of my dad's before giving them away...

message 9: by Heather (new)

Heather Oh the horror, the horror of writing in a book! That would be like breaking the spine or turning down a page as a book mark. ..

Haha!! Not that Heather!! That's criminal;) What about the autographed book, of which I have quite a few? Very much the same...

message 11: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments Give books away Brenda? What's that? Only kidding. I actually gave a customer an old copy I had of Petals on the Wind today, as she was having difficulty finding a copy and I had one that had been sitting on my bookshelf for over 25 years. It had my name written in it and the year 1984!!! That's what prompted me to start this post. It got me wondering about other readers and their books.

I must admit I haven't given many away, but some books I have "grown out of" have gone... That was lovely of you to do that. I bet your customer was happy:)

Now with my autographed books I don't think I would be writing in them. I also probably wouldn't read them and buy an extra copy for reading. I'm waiting for the release of the paperback version of Eyrie for that very reason. It's probably going to be a bit of a wait. My husband struggles a bit with that!!!

I want a paperback of that one too...I'm not fond of hardbacks anymore. As you say, the wait could be long (almost as long as my wait in the queue at the library!)

She was Brenda and gave me some chocolates as a "thank you" which was lovely of her but totally unnecessary. Really she was doing me a favour by taking it...that was one of many books I really should be letting go of now!!!

That's lovely:) But even with you saying that, her appreciation would make her want to get you something...

OK, I had a feeling that's what was being talked about but I had to throw my .2 cents out. Hee-hee, plus, I should be in bed, or at least getting ready. I do have two books that an author autographed for me which was totally cool.

Tango | 290 comments I love buying second hand books that have names or interesting inscriptions in them. I bought one at a garage sale a few days ago!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I only write my name in books if I am lending them

message 21: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'm the same as Jennie - I only routinely write my name in books if I lend them to someone, but I think it is a nice idea to write the date you bought it. Keep going, Elaine! Has anyone read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? A whole set of relationships begin when someone from Guernsey writes to a Londoner whose name and address was inside a secondhand book the Guernsey-dweller picked up - I just loved that story!!

That's right Kathryn. I just started reading the book. Just a bit off topic but I'm loving it so far too!!

message 23: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 5466 comments I only write my name in books when lending them out which I do in grey lead so it can be erased out :) But if I received a book as a gift and it had a nice written message inside I wouldn't mind as it's always nice to look back to see who gave it to you. Especially as I age cause I'm sure to forget :)

Yes that was a perfect example of writing in your books wasn't it....sort of like a message in a bottle!

Trust me, that's the truth!!! lol

message 26: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I'm with Phrynne; I never, ever mark a book in any way; I'd feel I was defacing them; books are sacred (in Bette-land). I only loan them to my sisters and stick a post-it note on the cover asking them to return it to me. Having said that, I don't mind if I buy a secondhand book with someone else's name in it; I like to think of someone owning and enjoying the book before me.

message 27: by Zoey (new)

Zoey (rozannen) | 1045 comments My Grandmother very much insisted that books given as gifts must be written in. To & From & the occasion for the gift. Also any books she bought while away would have when & where they were purchased. When I went to the UK for a holiday I brought her back a lovely book on the Queen (she loved the Queen) & it was instantly handed back to have the details written. To, From, the date, bought from Windsor Castle etc etc :)

message 28: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 20 comments I used to write my name in my books as a kid, not anymore. And now that I read pretty much exclusively on my kindle or iPad it's not really an option ;)

See I love that she did that Zoey. To me it makes it all the more personal and special. I must say I'm actually surprised at how few people write in their books. Maybe I am the odd one out after all!!! :)

Zoey (rozannen) | 1045 comments I agree Elaine & its really nice to be able to go back & read them sometimes :)

message 31: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 69 comments I have post-its in the front of my books. I put when I purchased them and where as well as date finished. But I don't put my name in them.

As for writing directly in books - my mum always used to write in the books she gave me as gifts. I had one that I recently got signed from an author and they thought it was lovely the inscription that I had in there from my mum :P

That is lovely Kate. I must say personally I like to look back on a book and if it was a gift read an inscription from who ever gave it to me. Usually my husband, kids and close friends who know how much I love receiving books as gifts tend to write in them for me. Also I find that if I've written the place and date I bought it,it tends to transport me back to a great time and good memories.

I think your daughter will really appreciate that Tamara. Especially if she becomes an avid reader and collector of books. I have done/still do the same for my children.

I never write in any books I own, but I love that idea Kate.
