Darren | 102 comments I tend to have one book on my kindle that's my main read, an audiobook for when I'm running (well, more like walking nowadays) and a graphic novel to read when I've had enough of the tv the kids are watching!

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm almost always reading a lot of stuff at one time. I'm a moody reader.

I usually have one fantasy, one (or two romances), a couple of re-reads and a bathroom book going at one time.

message 103: by Felina (new)

Felina Moody reader. That's is perfect. I am a moody reader. I just inexplicably get over things and back into them in a day. And I've never once gotten confused juggling my books.

message 104: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments I can only do one book at a time :(

message 105: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes ^Not just you. I have two books on the go. I usually have a non-fiction and fiction going. It's so cold here I don't like dragging the e-reader around with me when out and about so paper books work that beat until spring again.

Me, either.

Unless it's just pure gibberish...which has happened to me before. >:[

Thanks Paul. Just like you said, I couldn't read a thing! But I'm home now and will happily tuck into a book ;)

Paul Hurrah!

Same. I used to have multiple books going at once and didn't really enjoy it. These days I have accepted my many reading quirks and just roll with it.

But you also go through, like, a book a day...

Marysia Kosowski (marysia_kosowski) | 2 comments Becky wrote: "Marysia, that's a very interesting essay, however, this is the "What are you reading?" thread, not a thread for discussing writing or character development."

Sorry about that, I suppose I was sleepy and looking around for a good place to discuss books in more depth, and I thought a general reading thread was as good a place as any. It was tied into what I was currently reading, which I listed at the bottom. My apologies. Do you have a thread more appropriate for discussing fantasy tropes and such? I removed the post for you. :)

You're most welcome to start a thread on the subject of fantasy tropes, Marysia. I'd suggest the Fantasy folder if you'd like to discuss tropes specific to that genre, or Books & Discussions if you'd like to discuss tropes in fiction as a whole. :)

message 114: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I'm still slogging through Dangerous Women. Why is this taking me so long? So far my favorites are the Hobb and the Sanderson story. The first shattered my heart in tiny little pieces. And the second was devilishly fun, I would love for Sanderson to write a full novel in this universe, though it did remind me a lot of Peter V. Brett's Warded Man series.

I'm also listening to Dracula on audio. My first ever audio book but I think I'm already addicted. Will definitely be downloading more.

And I started The Way of Shadows. I'm hoping to finish the trilogy this month. My first *finished* for the series challenge.

message 115: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I didn't really care for The Way of Shadows. I don't know if it just wasn't the right time for me to read it or what, but I ended up giving up about mid-way through because I was just not interested.

message 116: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) But yay! about the audiobook. Who is the reader? I'm glad you're enjoying it! I love that book and I love audiobooks. :D

message 117: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I haven't started Dangerous Women yet. I know, that's crazy, with it having an ASOIAF story in it. And a Dresden.

Oh, the Sanderson is actually supposed to be set in his Cosmere universe. That's the same universe that has Mistborn, Stormlight, Warbreaker, and Elantris. Just a different world that hasn't been seen before.

That series was ok, but not great (IMO of course). The Lightbringer series however.. So much better.

message 119: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah? Maybe I'll give that one a try then. :)

I'm slightly clueless, lol.

Ahh, OK. LOL

message 124: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments The Dresden story is the only one I've read in Dangerous Women so far.

I needed a Dresden fix.

message 125: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I've only read the Dresden and Rowland stories. The Rowland was a bit creepy... But nicely creepy.

message 126: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'm hung up on starting because I'm not caught up with the Abercrombie stand-alones. I'm afeared of "Some Desperados" spoiling those for me.

And I can't very well read the rest of the book and not that story.

According to the group I'm reading it with there's no spoilers but the main character of the story does show up in one of his books... Red Country? I think. I liked the story but I haven't read anything else by the author so I sort of felt like I was missing something.

message 128: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Just read it, Chris.

No spoilers for his other books.

message 129: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments ok, that works...

And I know the Dresden story would spoil the hell out of that series, but I've read all of them.

message 130: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Yeah, it would. Its set after Ghost Story and before Cold Days.

message 131: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Yep. I read it after only reading Storm Front. I was warned about the spoiler though and read it anyway. My fault.

message 132: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Don't feel bad. I was spoiled after reading Storm Front too. I made the mistake of looking up the other books in the series on GR. The publisher doesn't seem to care about spoiling its own books, as they tell you everything you need to know in the book blurbs.

message 133: by Paul (new)

Paul I still need to start Dangerous Women. In general I'm not a huge fan of story collections but I need to read this one for the Abercrombie, Butcher and Martin stuff at least!

Interesting that the Dresden Story is set after Ghost Story. Given what I've heard about who the main character is I would have expected it to be before Ghost Story. Even more interested to read that one now.

Need to finish up The Apocalypse Codex and then do Caliban's War first though.

message 134: by Marysia (new)

Marysia Kosowski (marysia_kosowski) | 2 comments Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn. I'm really busy with school right now though, so I haven't had much time to get through it. Sharon Shinn is in general an amazing writer. I think she has something for everyone. My personal favorite is her first novel, The Shape-Changer's Wife. It's darker than her other books. Although I love all her work (the Archangel series is also really good), I wish she'd write another story like The Shape-Changer's Wife. It feels like an old legend in the best sense.

message 135: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I'm finally getting into Steelheart. I'm liking it so far. I definitely want to see where it all ends.

message 136: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm almost done with Steelheart. I'm hoping to wrap it up tonight. I think tomorrow I get my new Audible credit and I'm getting Swan Song. I don't know which book book I'm starting next. Hmmmmmm

I've only used Audible once or twice do to freebies offered through the ads on my old K3. How do you earn credits?

message 138: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm a member so I get a credit each month that I can use to get an audiobook.

Otherwise, I don't know what you're asking.

message 139: by Becky (last edited Jan 08, 2014 07:24PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It depends on your membership with Audible, Nyssa. The standard membership is $14.95/ month, which equals 1 credit per month. You get the credit when you're billed for the month.

They have 2/month plans, and ones where you pay upfront for the year, but I prefer the monthly plan.

message 140: by Felina (new)

Felina Yes. The monthly plan. The yearly one is a little too much.

message 141: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Felina wrote: "Yes. The monthly plan. The yearly one is a little too much."

Agreed, though it does work out to be less money per credit. I might give it a try one year.

Ah! Okay. thank you.

message 143: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I just looked, and I think that I will probably switch to one of the annual plans soon. If I switch to the Gold Annual, I'd save $30 over the year, which is like getting 2 months free.

I never realized audiobooks were so expensive. "The Help" is $27!!

I will soon - I'm going to be getting severance payments for a bit. Sounds like a perfect time to stock up some audible credits on the cheap. :D

It is expensive. That's why you do the membership. It's much cheaper.

message 148: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Yeah. I have an Audible account for hubby. He only goes for one book a month so I only pay $14.95 per book.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nyssa wrote: "I never realized audiobooks were so expensive. "The Help" is $27!!"

With a membership, you could buy it for $18.62 if you didn't have a credit. (That's another thing I like about the service. You get a discount on non-credit purchases too.)

message 150: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I see. Cool! Well thanks to a wonderful gift from a friend, my daughter listened to the first 2 chapters of HP, while cleaning her room. She seemed to like it. Not sure if my hubby would like it for the car, but if interest grows I may give it a go. Thanks for all of the info!!
