Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I have discovered an amazing site: worldcat.org

Here is a site which tells the number of editions there are of specific books, the dates of their publications, and how many libraries hold each book worldwide. It also provides short descriptions of each book. Books are categorized by author. There is a search box. It includes musical composers and their works as well.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It is cool. I've been there occasionally for some tough to find books.

message 4: by Werner (new)

Werner I'm familiar with World Catalog; it's the online union catalog of the roughly 100,000 libraries worldwide (including the one where I work) that are part of the OCLC network. But I didn't know you could access it through the regular Internet; I always thought it was strictly a subscription database. That must be the case only for using it for interlibrary loan, I guess.

Sorry to bear bad news, but World Catalog will cease to exist as of May 19 of this year. :-( OCLC will be replacing it with a similar database, WorldShare, which supposedly will have more fancy bells and whistles than the present product.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It didn't dawn on me that "cat" stands for "catalog"! Duh! :)

I can't imagine all the work it takes to put something like that together. I wonder if the new WorldShare will be freely accessible on the Internet like Worldcat.

message 6: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but there's been something like it available since I first got Internet access in '89 or 90. Even before that, some BBS's had gates into university libraries that could gain access to catalogs & book info in others.

In MD, one of our local libraries was an early adopter of the Internet & was a great gateway into such resources. Chip, the husband of a local librarian & a Gravely enthusiast, was the guy that implemented their public network. He opened up most of their resources on a read only basis. It was pretty cool considering we were doing it over old, slow modems.

Every few years, there seems to be more to access, but experimental searches & groups seem to come & go. I hope Worldshare will be even better. Anyone can get a free account on WorldCat. I've had mine for ages, although I don't access it often since Google, GR, or one of the other book sites is usually faster & has more relevant information for me. I hope it transfers over.

message 7: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I didn't know an account was required at Worldcat. I don't have one and I was able to access info there.

message 8: by Werner (new)

Werner For libraries that are paying for accounts we can use for interlibrary loans, the transfer of accounts from World Catalog to WordShare is NOT automatic; we had to register for the new service and create a new account for it, with a different user name and password. But I don't know what the procedures are for people who have free accounts, and don't know if the new service will also be accessible to everyone on the Internet.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner, thanks for the info.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't know if having a free account makes any difference, Joy. I may have signed up for a test or something, but it's been far too long & I don't do enough on the site.

Thanks, Nina. I seem to be drawn to exploring the Internet. Once I get going on an "investigation", I become very tenacious. Sometimes I have so many windows open that it gets to be quite a job keeping them all straight. Anyway, it keeps the cobwebs from my brain. :)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments BELOW IS MY POST FROM ANOTHER AREA OF THIS GROUP:

Joy H. wrote: " ... (I wonder if WorldCat shows EVERY Goodreads review. I'll have to research that.)..."

WorldCat DOES show reviews by Goodreads members! It seems to show only a few GR reviews and then there's a link which takes you to the Goodreads website where there are more reviews of the same book.

For example, if you go to the following WorldCat link, you will see my review of Confessions of an actor : an autobiography:
http://www.worldcat.org/title/confess...
(You must scroll down at the above-linked page to see my review there.)

Nina | 6069 comments Today, all in the papers is about the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles appearing here at the baseball stadium fifty years ago in 1964. My two teenagers at the time; one daughter and a son went to the concert and it remains one their cherished memories. My youngest says she never heard lullabys as a toddler; only Beatle songs. She went to sleep listening to John, Paul, Ringo and George.

Werner I can still remember watching the Beatles' American debut on the Ed Sullivan Show; but not being a rock fan, I wasn't especially impressed. (That's no doubt related to the fact that I'm tone deaf.) Of course, back in the day, I also used watch Hee Haw regularly. Some might suggest that my tone deafness is relevant to that fact, too.... :-)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) A lot of my generation tend to have a strong preference to one band over the other. Marg & I certainly do.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments My generation (1940's music) as well! LOL

message 25: by Werner (new)

Werner There's good news regarding World Catalog! Earlier this week, we here at the BC library learned that the change from World Catalog to WorldShare only involves the library subscription service for interlibrary loans, which will now have a different "platform." But the World Catalog database itself is NOT going away; it will continue to be accessible just as it always has. So, you'll still be able to use it!

Doesn't look like spring here!
