Line Hi...

I'm about to begin reading this book, but seeing as it's been quite a while since I read the two first books in the series, I'm hoping some kind soul(s) will help me out with story so far...

Just an overlook of the most important stuff that happened in book 1+2, it doesn't have to be a full novel in-and-on it self...

Thanks in advance...

sailor _stuck_at_sea I haven't read any of these yet so I don't know how complete they are.

Good luck with your reading :D

Matthew Williams Wow, that's kind of a tall order. But I've done this before, so bear with me for a sec. Here's what happens in book I:

Ned Stark goes to King's Landing and learns of the conspiracy that murdered Jon Arryn (the King's former Hand) and that it was to protect the truth about Queen Cersei's three children being the product of incest with her brother Jaime. Robert is then killed in a hunting accident, though foul play was involved, and Cersei moves quickly to put Joffrey on the throne. Ned is behead by Joffrey and a war of succession begins, with Robb Stark declaring war and his bannermen declaring him "King in the North". Arya escapes King's Landing with the help of a Black Brother who pretends she is a boy joining the Night's Watch along with a group of convicts, orphans and volunteers.

In the north, John Snow joins the Night's Watch and learns that strange things are happening beyond the Wall. Wildlings parties are found dead, and there are rumors of a King-Beyond-the-Wall rallying all the different clans. His uncle goes out to find what happened to a group of Brothers who never returned, and he too disappears. Shortly thereafter, a group of Wights tries to kill Lord Commander Mormont back in their fort, and they conclude that the Others are coming with the return of winter. So a full ranging party of Brothers sets out to find his uncle and determine what's going on.

In the east, on Essos, Danerys marries Khal Drogo, they fall in love and she becomes pregnant. Drogo kills her brother Viserys when he goes mad and threatens to kill their baby. And when an assassin from Westeros tries to poison Danaerys on King Robert's orders, Drogo declares that he will invade Westeros and revenge himself on Robert for it. However, he dies from an injury and treachery, and Danaerys is left with a small following to die in the Red Waste. But her dragons hatch and she declares she will lead her people to victory.

In book II, things progress and the war continues.

The war of succession widens as Robert's two brothers also demand the crown for themselves, and the Ironborn of the Iron Isles declare their independence. This is known as the "War of Five Kings". Robb's army proceeds south and manages to score several key victories, capturing Jaime Lannister in the process. However, this leaves Winterfell vulnerable and Theon Greyjoy, desperate to win his father's approval, leads an assault and captures it. His luck runs out, as Bran, Rickon, Hodor, and the Reeds escape and he murders two children and pretends they are the Starks. Robb's bannermen begin laying siege to Winterfell, but are turned on an army led by Ramsay Bolton (Roose Bolton's crazy bastard). He then takes Theon hostage and burns Winterfell to the ground.

Stannis Baratheon is joined by a red priestess named Melissandre who thinks he is Azor Ahai reborn, the warrior who defeated the Others the last time they came to Westeros. She aids him with her magic, killing his brother and allowing him to take control of most of his brother's army. He then marches on King's Landing and begins attacking it. However, the siege is broken thanks to Tyrion's leadership, and the last minute intervention of Tywin Lannister, who recruited House Tyrell to the Lannister's side. They win, King's Landing is saved, and Stannis goes back to Dragonstone to lick his wounds.

While traveling North, Arya and her group are attacked by Lannisters and they are taken prisoner. They are taken to Harrenhal, where they are put to work. Arya meets Jaqen H'gar, one of the prisoners who was part of their convoy, and is told that he will kill three men to repay her for saving him and his companions. She uses him to turn the tables on the Lannisters, free the Stark prisoners, and they take Harrenhal for Robb. She then escapes and begins working her way north again with her companions.

In Essos, Danaerys and her followers make it out of the Red Waste and find the city of Qarth, where she is welcomed because of her dragons. She is courted by Xaro Xhoan Daxos, leader of the merchant princes, but is unable to find support for them. She then goes into the House of the Undying after they take her dragons hostage. She goes inside and receives visions about her past, present and future. They then try to take her, and her dragons burn the place down. She then flees the city with her people and set out again to look for support.

Beyond the Wall, John Snow and the Night's Watch travel north, stopping at Craster's Keep for food and information, and then going to an old fort called the Fist of the First Men. While their, a veteran brother named Qorin Halfhand takes John and others out to search for Mance Rayder - a former Brother who they learn is "The King-Beyond-the-Wall". Eventually, they become surrounded, and Qorin tells John to make it look like he's defecting and has John kill him.

That's about it for the first two books. That help at all? In truth, there a couple things I know I'm glossing over too ;)

Line Christian: Thanks, but he says it contains spoilers for all the 4 first books, so I'm a little 'scared' to read it...

Matthew: Thanks!! If you didn't gloss over some things, the recap would probably be about as long as one of the books... :P

Well yes, it's a recap. That said it's separated into two parts. The first part covers the first two books, the last the next two.

There's 4 parts...
Part 3 covers book 1+2, part 4 covers book 3+4, but I'm not sure what part 1 and 2 covers, so don't really want to read them... :S

Those cover the deep background of the story, meaning the history of the world in ASOIAF. This includes everything from the Children of the Forest who lived in Westeros before the First Men came, how the First Men arrived from Essos via a land bridge (echoes of the Bering Land Bridge theory there), the last time the Others came and were driven back, the Andal invaders, the rise of the Seven Kingdoms, the Valyrian invasions and the creation of the Iron Throne, and then the events that preceded the first book - i.e. Aerys II, the "Mad King" and Robert's Rebellion.

So basically, you can avoid all that, unless you want to do some serious reading that will fill in a lot of the blanks in the story, but fill your head to the point of overflowing ;)
