Sage's scars: Did I miss something?

How did Sage acquire her scarred face? Did I miss reading this part? Considering the importance it has in her character development, shouldn't we have had a little more background on this?

It was towards the end of the book, she talked about being in a car accident with her mother.

Di Thanks all. I went back and found it..don't know how I missed it the first time. I'm still wondering of Picoult's reasoning for such a brief mention o ...more

To add to Natalie's comment the car accident eventualy led to her mother's death.

It was mentioned briefly near the end of the book, on the scene where Sage slept with Leo, the DOJ officers.

She was in a car accident with her mother. Sage lives and has scars on the inside and outside (her face), but her mother dies after the crash.

I also thought there should've been a little more focus on this in the book. It was explained so briefly that it's easy to miss.

Sage survived a car accident and her mother didn't. It was explained briefly however the entire book explores her scars from the past - the real one (the one that left Sage`s face marked) and the physiological one, that explains her attitudes, her life and even her encounters with the SS official
