Geography?

Across the trilogy, there's a lot of road trips...between Belly's home and Cousins...Brown University, Boston, etc. It's not really clear where Laurel, Susannah, and the two dads homes are in relation to Cousins and the various universities. At one point I thought that Mr. Fisher worked in NYC, but his secretary was helping with the wedding arrangements in Cousins like they were local.

Does anyone have any insights? It would seem to me that it would be more than a few hours between New England and South Carolina, for example.
