Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Ill-Made Knight
Loved this. Would have read it in one sitting if it hadn't been quite so long :) Cameron is turning into one of my favourite authors

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry
An interesting little tale as I wasn't ever sure exactly where it was going.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Balancing Act
Meh. Same as every other Joanna Trollope, ever.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Nature Of The Beast
Enjoyed this. It was clever and dark.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Some Luck
Well this was a strange one. After a few chapters I thought This is dull, I'm going to stop reading but somehow I got sucked in and finished it to the end. It's not really a story, as such, more of a narrative of the family over many years, a chapter per year. Curiously addictive.

I should say that Jane Smiley has been an author I have always enjoyed - and possibly only she could have made me read a novel about horses (Horse Heaven), and created Justa Bob, who must rank the top equine character ever...

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Sharp Practice: #3 in the Best Defence Series
Third in a series about a Linlithgow-based ciminal defence lawyer. Good stuff.

The Missing and the Dead
Love this series.

Personal Jack Reacher, well back on form after a couple of below-par outings.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Life For A Life I can't say this one had much going for it, other than familiarity of location and main character. The new sidekick DS is such an unlikely figure with no redeeming features. Not a high point in this series at all.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Wolf Winter
Very atmospheric - very cold! A sort of murder mystery and a hint of magic.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments She Who Waits Low Town 3. A satisfying end to the series.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Lift: An Eddie Collins short story Very good. Short but really not sweet ;)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Bone Clocks (Actually I read the kindle version but there seem to be so many versions of this on GR that I gave up looking.)
Clever - too clever?- generally well written, but over long and unfortunately ultimately rather, well, dull frankly. A bit of a disappointment.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Blackberry Wine
Fairly typical Joanne Harris! A good read

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Half the World
Joe Abercrombie has to be one of the best fantasy writers around at the moment. I think I liked this even more than Half a King

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Well I have been failing spectacularly at keeping this up to date haven't I?

Our Man in Havana Read for real life book group. Witty, good story, satire and thought-provoking. What more would you want?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Murder by the Glass
The first Verity Long I have read. It won't be the last :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Fireproof
If you like your Satanism with dark humour, this is the one for you.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Knight's Shadow
So I enjoyed this more than the first in the series.
Better story, better characterisation, better humour. Just better

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Runaway
Very different from May's Lewis trilogy, but also a great read.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Justice 4.1
This has been on my TBR list like, forever, but I kept bumping it because sci-fi isn't really, if I were to be honest with both myself and with you, dear reader, my thing. Big mistake...
I found a good storyline and characters that were witty and believable. If George Lucas hadn't made such a ham-fisted attempt at political intrigue and machinations in Ep1-3 he might have produced something much more believable - like this. The scene setting was very good and I enjoyed the technology/agricultural mash-up.
Wish I could have learned a little more about Haldar though (I liked him) - perhaps in the sequel? (which I won't leave so long to read...)

message 175: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Glad you liked it Rosemary

Haldar is in the sequel War 2.2, and you do learn a bit more about his life.
The problem with Haldar is that I'm still learning about him as well.:-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Just bought it Jim, thanks :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The End of the World Running Club

YAAN (Yet Another Apocalypse Novel) hits my reading list. I enjoyed this - there were no zombies for a start - and it was quite different. Ultimately quite melancholy. Which I suppose isn't too surprising, really.

Hope you like it, you'll meet a couple of old friends and might make some new ones :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Boy have I let this slide! OK here goes...

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Under the Skin
Read this when it first came out and have reread it for my real life book group. Far ickier than I remembered :/ A good read though

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
Fabby. Very clever. Mr Staniforth recommended it :)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Ha! Thought I'd heard my name…

Glad you enjoyed it. Definitely a bookstore lover's book.

A certain other book I might recommend is getting close to beta stage, nudge, nudge ;~)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments From The Storm
Interesting and thought provoking

Oh really? What could that possibly be? Wink ;)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments His Majesty's Dragon or in fact Temeraire as my edition was called. Bit of a sucker for dragons (and you can blame that on late childhood/early teens reading of the Pern books) and this one was fairly enjoyable, if a tad overlong and just a teensy weensy bit, I don't know, irritating... Not sure if I'll read any more tbh, r perhaps after a decent break

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments A Crown for Cold Silver
An enjoyable fantasy romp with good characters and sufficiently different from the run of the mill. A good read :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Oh I've been at bit pants at this lately haven't I??

A Darker Shade of Magic Interesting set-up, good characters, bit swashbuckly - what's not to like?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Vagrant Loved this. The whole solitary warrior/noble gunslinger thing going on.

Killer Contract Book four in the Linlithgow-based legal series

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Uprooted Fairly decent fantasy. And you can't beat a bok that features Baba Yaga can you? (I remember being really creeped out by her as a child)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Crimes Against Magic Well yeah. Did what it said on the cover.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Stonemouth Great writing, as always. A really good read.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Liar's Key I do enjoy this chap's writing

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Poisoned Island This was a great read and a new author to me. Exotic islands, Kew, Sir Joseph Banks, strange plants and early detective work. Good stuff

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Lie Ho hum. Was everyone in this book really annoying, or was it just me?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Goblin Emperor Rather long, rather dull, uninspiring characters and an astonishing number of really silly names.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden
In a very similar vein to the Hundred Year Old Man, and almost as enjoyable.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet Bloody brilliant for a debut novel. Great characters, more than a hint of Firefly about it (although I'm absolutely not saying that it's derivative) and the science in the fiction didn't get in the way of the story. A real mixed bag crew of humans and other sapients on (as it turns out) a rather dangerous job, and their adventures/interactions on the way. (And it has none of that po-facedness that you find in a lot of SF.)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Well oh dear kind of let this slide haven't I! So this is what I've read. Asterisks beside the recommendations!!
A Room With No Natural Light Rather disappointing Douglas Lindsay, usually enjoy his books MUCH better than this.
The Emperor's Blades Pretty much generic fantasy.
Heart-Shaped Box a DNF.
**The Mechanical enjoyed this a lot. Original and interesting alternative steampunky history with clockwork men.
The Seventh Bride Like a fairy tale
Bitter Seeds Nazi superhumans vs British warlocks. Not nearly as bad as it sounds.
Storm Front Been meaning to read this for ages. Then read Fool Moon Grave Peril Summer Knight and Death Masks. Probably won't read any more Harry Dresden for a bit :/

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments An Officer and a Spy Bit of a snore fest, and curiously detached
Kill City Blues If I were honest I have to say I like Sandman Slim better than Harry Dresden. Probably.
The Ghost. Good book, liked the film too.
Frostborn: The Gorgon Spirit Hey ho, on we go. Getting a bit formulaic here, Jonathan?
The Getaway God and Killing Pretty. Overdosed with James Stark now!
The Detective's Secret Hmm. Bit weird.
