Shannon (shananigansreads) Hi! I'm Shannon avid book reader and goodreads.com addict. Even though I visit goodreads at least twice a day I've been remiss in participating in book groups, but I hope to change that all starting now. Thanks to the Joy for moderating this group and I hope to talk to many of you in the near future. *smile*

Glad you joined Shannon! My favorite part of GR is all of the groups, and talking to the people in them. A majority of the books I have added to my "to-read" shelf were suggested by GR members. :) It's very helpful in finding ideas for new books to read.

Ralph McEwen I just joined and thought that I should mention that my ebook reader is a Sony Reader and my computer of course.

Welcome Ralph! Do you like the Sony ereader?

message 264: by Ralph (new)

Ralph McEwen I do like this orginal Sony ereader. It has a good battery life, the epaper is very readable and it's light enough to carry around. Also I must admit I have a problem with proprietary system like the Kindel. So a grain of salt with my opinon may serve you well. :)

message 265: by Christy (new)

Christy | 7 comments Hi my name is Christy. I'm fairly new to Goodreads but I love to read and this seemed like a great group for someone like myself who reads many different genres. I am a nurse who works night shift and lately 60+ hours per week so not as much time as I'd like to read but look forward to changing that soon. Hope to enjoy this group and get some ideas for new stuff to read.

Ralph-I have the Nook, but I was considering getting my Mother in law an e-reader for Xmas. :)

Christy-Welcome! My husbands side of the family is filled with nurses so I understand how hectic it can be. Gotta make time to read though! I don't think I could live without books! My Mother in law is a mother to 3, a nurse, and was getting a triple masters degree. She went years without picking up a book, and just started having the time to read again.

Christina- Thanks for joining our group! There are a lot of interesting people here and a WIDE range of readers who enjoy many different genres. Are you in undergrad or grad school? I'm in the process of transferring schools. One more year left of undergrad, and then I start grad school. I started college a little later in the game than most of the people I know. Otherwise, I would be done by now! :(

Welcome Sara,

Maybe your headaches are eye strain from reading... You should have your vision checked. The same thing happens to my Dad, and he has bad eyes. I'd be worth it to find out so that you can read more! :) Thanks for joining the group.

stormhawk | 1184 comments Joy, it might be a good idea to start a Goodreads Author board so that posts by authors like this don't get lost in other areas of our Haven.

I've read quite a few books based on author's recommendations of their works and have really enjoyed them. I think they deserve their own showcase.

message 271: by Steven (new)

Steven Belanger | 43 comments Hey, guys, I'm Steve. I just joined this group, and tons of others about books, because I am also addicted to Goodreads and I love discussing books. I'm an avid reader and writer of lots of different things. I like it so much that I think I never do enough of either one, though logically I understand that that couldn't possibly be true. And now, I offer a shameless copy and paste:

Steve Belanger has been writing since he was seven, after he read Stephen King's Carrie and thought: "I can do this." His first published piece, written at the same age, was "A Christmas Carole," a short story inside of a Christmas card, created for his ailing mother. She smiled, and he was hooked. He's writing whenever he's not paying The Man (or is it the other way around?) and he lives with his better half, his greyhound and his one-eyed cat, who somehow still shoots him a wry glance when Steve's being bad. On most days (and nights, and weekends, and holidays, and--) he's hunched over his office desk, writing stories or novels, pounding the internet pavement, preparing story submissions for magazine editors and novel packages for agents, or pouring over papers and plans for his day job. And over-alliterating the letter P. He also eats and sleeps, on occasion. He enjoys baseball and breathing, when he has the time, and he's finishing his Masters.

Thanks for the chance to stand in front of the mike. There's a link to a spec. fiction short story soon to be published by Space and Time Magazine, and the Prologue and Chapter One of my first completed mystery novel, Cursing the Darkness. Oh, and I teach English, so I'll have a LOT of book recommendations and such. Thanks again, guys.

Stormhawk- I have a promotional folder and a specific author folder... I figured that they would post in one of those. Do you still think I should make a GR author board too?

Ohhhh, that's horrible. I get horrible migraines so I can relate. Have you ever tried listening to audiobooks? That way you wouldn't hurt your eyes, but you can still read! :) My husband does that a LOT. He gets to work at 5am, before the store opens... so he has about 5 hours during which no one bothers him. It's the perfect time for audiobooks. Personally, I am not a fan of them, but they are always an option.

Welcome Barbara! I'm glad you discovered this group. Personally, one of my favorite aspects of GR is the groups. It's nice to get to know other readers from around the world. Plus, you'll get a LOT of good suggestions on books to read! :)

message 282: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 266 comments I'm fairly new to GR and really enjoying the site! Don't know how I didn't know about it sooner, but glad I've found it as I really enjoy spending time here. I've had a long break from reading (several years!) and just getting back into it. Ironic since I work in a library! ;) I mainly read fiction, but if a non-fiction book catches my attention and really interests me, I'll read it. My favorite genre is HF... can't seem to get enough of it! I also really enjoy mysteries, thrillers/suspsense, and have started reading a few YF series. Definitely not into the horror or Sci-Fi genres, and don't care for a lot of the hot & heavy "bodice rippers" either! LOL

message 285: by Steven (new)

Steven Belanger | 43 comments Sara,

I talked to my best friend, who's also the neighborhood optometrist, and he says if you've been given a clean bill of health about your eyesight, then the problem might be a) the amount (or lack) of lighting in the room you're reading in. Too much light is just as bad for some as too little, and could cause eye strain, which could cause headaches, or b) your eyes may be too dry if the room is too dry, which would cause eye strain and (see above), or c) if you wear contacts, they may be the wrong prescription, as may your glasses if you wear those. He recommends a second opinion overall; he said there could be tons of minor causes and issues.

Hope this helps!

Lindsay Hi Liz! Do you enjoy writing fantasy and paranormal works or just reading them? Do you have any 5 star suggestions - I have never quite gotten into that genre although I did enjoy the HP books and Twilight and The Historian had a bit of paranormal I suppose!

message 292: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Kolodziej (ejkolodziej) | 15 comments I write fantasy and paranormal as well as reading it. Some of my favs in that genre are kim harrison and jeaniene frost. Depends on what you like. My all time fav is the tortall series by tamora pierce. she was the first author to really inspire me to write my own stuff. :)
