James Thompson (jamesthompson) | 11 comments Hello All! I'm James Thompson. I'm an author living in Finland. My novels that have appeared in the States are Snow Angels and Lucifer's Tears, crime stories in the Inspector Vaara series. The next, Helsinki White, will come out in March. My publisher is Putnam. I read everything from modernist poetry to dark, gritty noir. Thanks for having me in the group! Best, James

message 952: by Jan (new)

Jan (booklover777) Hi All!
Thanks to Amanda James for inviting me. I think this group will be a good fit for me. I've been on Goodreads since 2007 and have been getting great recommendations from friends and group members ever since.
I used to be a scifi/fantasy reader in my teens, then a mystery/thriller reader for many years, then joined my face-to-face book club, Eclectica, to broaden my reading. It worked!
I also administer the Recreational Reading collection at my workplace, a small university library. I'm always on the lookout for great additions to that collection and have gotten compliments on the selection available.
Looking forward to being part of Book Haven!

message 969: by ~Jennifer~ (new)

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) Hi everyone (& thanks Amanda for the invite)! My name is Jennifer. I've been a GRs addict for going on 2 years now. I help moderate a few groups and love interacting with everone on here. I'm a stay at home mom (and an Air Force Wife) so some days the only people I talk to over the age of 2 or don't have fur are on here. I read anything and everything. I'm a sucker for happy endings. I occasionally do shed a few tears if a book is emotional enough. I always inhale really deeply when I walk into a bookstore. (Really wish they would bottle that scent...can't beat it) And, I think that's enough. lol ☺

My favorite authors are Stephen King, Margaret Atwood, Chuck Pahalniuk, and David Foster Wallace. I am a middle school reading teacher, so I try to keep up with all the great YA fiction as well. I am currently enjoying the Gone series by Michael Grant.

message 987: by Susan (new)

Susan Hi folks, I'm a voracious reader and also a writer of fiction and non-fiction. I usually devour about 2 novels a week. Right now I'm in the midst of a John Connolly thriller. Non-fiction goes more slowly, I'm currently reading the bio of Ethel Waters.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention I'm a Music & Mayhem person. For many years I was a professional musician ... and then I started killing people. Fictionally, of course. You can sneak a peak at my latest here

Susan Hi Nissie, Hi Bridget ... don't worry, I'm usually harmless. Better watch out for the trumpet playing at 10AM tho ... :)

message 993: by Al (new)

Al | 52 comments Susan! Welcome kindred soul!

I was a professional trumpeter too (A.F. of M, etc.), but I reached the age where I feared my piccolo trumpet would give me a stroke one day and I retired. It's killing me to see someone else do the Messiah this season, but I dare not unretire. Like you, I became a writer. Quelle joie, n'est-ce pas?

I tried to sample your cd, but the page had no Play button. (I tried two different browsers.) I think I'll order it anyway. I already have Alison Balsom's oeuvre in my collection--why not yours too? My most recent, bestest duet buddy was a woman, just as devoted to the baroque repertoire as I am.

You might be one of the few Goodreaders interested in a project I began for her and myself, that is now available to all: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12.... Here's a sample Bach fugue you can print out and play, with my best wishes: http://anadarcy.blogspot.com/2011/03/...

Looking forward to more from you!

message 994: by Susan (new)

Susan Hey Al! nice to hear from a fellow trumpeter. Yeah, the whole idea of my "head bursting" whilst playing the Bach Magnificat or something sort of scared me, too. I still play every day, but mostly on a B-flat.

Alas, I have struggled with various "players" on my website CD page. So sorry the current one doesn't work for you. Maybe I"ll put up another one. Yes, Alison Balsom is great, I have one of her CDs. Delightful!

Will check out your project soon ...

I do love the idea of Music and Mayhem working together in a fictional setting.

message 999: by Susan (new)

Susan Hi Al, thanks for the heads-up on the music player. I inserted a different one and it seems to play okay now, both on CD page, and another on the "more samples" page.
http://www.susanfleet.com/susan_fleet...

I checked out your blog and also your duet book. The Bach Little Fugue is one of my favorites. I'll pass along the link to your duet book so some of my trumpeter friends who are still teaching. I haven't played duets for a while ... too busy writing :)

message 1000: by Susan (new)

Susan Okay Bridget, I'll use my mute. :) Then again, if you're going to put a pillow over your head I might play Revile!

Hi Judith, the music & mayhem do get together in my latest thriller. Beautiful ambitious flutist wants to be a star, but fame can be dangerous.

See the scary trailer on my website ...
