Introductions...

Hi Catherine! I'm DeeDee, it's nice to meet you! Hope everything goes well with your story!!!

Welcome Catherine,
For a writing kick start, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) starts in about 45 minutes ;) It may be a push to start it now, but something for next year (or a last minute, crazy, excellent decision for now!)
http://www.nanowrimo.org/

From horses I moved onto anything and everything I can get my hands on. I still enjoy reading a wide range of genres. My first adventure in fantasy was The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. I loved it. I combed the school libraries for more Jules Verne. Then I moved onto the Dune series by Frank Herbert and then tons of books by Piers Anthony, and I was hooked.
Then I discovered Stephen King and read The Stand until the cover fell off and lucky for me King released the complete and uncut version so I could read it all over again. My newest adventure in reading is paranormal romance, and I’ve recently become hooked on vampires. Most importantly, I love anything with a good story.
I actually became a writer thanks to reading James Herriot, although at first I wanted to be a writing veterinarian. I settled for journalism and began a sports writer. Currently, I have just released my own fantasy novel and look forward to writing even more.

Hi Bridget! I'm DeeDee and I love James Herriot too! Welcome!

In about a month I'll be releasing my own first novel (fantasy, if you're curious), and between the stressful times that come with balancing that and the day-to-day routines, I'm always on the lookout for great new reads across many genres - though I seem to have a penchant for the fantasy and the sci-fi.
Sorry I'm behind on the welcomes. I've haven't been getting notifications again. Anyway, welcome to all the new members! Glad you could join us :)

Hi Chris! I'm DeeDee, welcome to the group!

Thanks DeeDee! I fell in love with him when I was like 12 and thought he had the best job heal animals and then write about it.

Hi Michele! I'm DeeDee, it's nice to meet you!

Haven't a clue what to do here, other than to share my love of books and great stories.
Lately, all I've been reading are manuscripts (new publisher, first books being released in February), and some are great, and some are...well, let's just say that the writers don't have voices, and should probably remain voiceless!
But this role (as acquisitions editor) really gets me reading outside of my normal genres, and it has been enlightening.
But mysteries, thrillers, and literary novels are my main interests when I'm not reading manuscripts.
I'll probably be mostly asking questions, so here's my first, if you'd like to answer it: what's more important to you, the story or the writing?
Cheers,
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl,
As a reader, I have to say it's about the story. If the story hooks me then I hardly notice typos or writing errors. If the story is dull or doesn't hold my attention, all those errors seem to just jump off the page at me.

As a reader, I agree - story is everything, and if it grabs me, I can overlook a lot...and have been known to do so, although once I learned about great writing, I found that authors who used to grab my attention now irritate me, and I can't read them any more (Wilbur Smith is one of those - first books great; later books, not so great.)
As a publisher, my dream is to find both - a great story and great writing.
And speaking of that, have to get back to editing...

Maybe as a publisher find someone with a good story and then someone that writes well and put them together. I've heard two heads are better than one.

I'm just here because I LOVE books but I've been a bit too occupied with the internet and I need to get myself back to the better form of entertainment. Reading. LOL.

Hi Michele, welcome to our group. I'm like you, I will read just about anything but like YA paranormal scifi, fantasy etc. ;-)

Amanda James kindly invited me and I'm delighted to be here.
I am an author (hard working) writing the sequel to my novel and researching like mad for it.
My preferred genre I suppose to read would be gothic. I fell in love with it years ago.
I do enjoy other sorts of books too and still have a soft spot for non-fiction which is great because of all the research I do!

Good question!
I am all about the story but it is totally tied into the writing. It is so disappointing to me when I good story is ruined by bad writing (read here: bad editing).
I am prepared to self edit as I read, up to a point; but while I might accept that on a first book I'm not going to do it indefinitely no matter how intriguing your story idea might be. If you have a great story concept but no writing skill (or anyone that will read your book once and point out your typos/bad language, mindless repetition, etc) then give it to someone who can make it something worthy!
A good story can be ruined by bad writing. 'You can't have one without the other" ;)

About the writing and story--I agree, a great story can be ruined by bad writing.
But the best writing in the world needs a good story!
Having said that, I think a story can be so simple as to be nearly a non story--with me it's the characters that make or break a story.
My fiction is character driven and I prefer to read that sort of fiction as well.
As for editing, I do my best but always defer to an editor!

Love HEART a good editor xo
..I hear they're out there .. ;)
