Welcome Catherine,

For a writing kick start, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) starts in about 45 minutes ;) It may be a push to start it now, but something for next year (or a last minute, crazy, excellent decision for now!)

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 165 comments Hi, I’m Bridget and I live in Northern California. Lived here my whole life and love the small town lifestyle. I also love to read. My mom encouraged reading in our family at a very young age, and it didn’t matter what it was we read as long as we were reading. I started out reading anything that had a horse in it as I was horse crazy from before the time I could walk.

From horses I moved onto anything and everything I can get my hands on. I still enjoy reading a wide range of genres. My first adventure in fantasy was The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. I loved it. I combed the school libraries for more Jules Verne. Then I moved onto the Dune series by Frank Herbert and then tons of books by Piers Anthony, and I was hooked.

Then I discovered Stephen King and read The Stand until the cover fell off and lucky for me King released the complete and uncut version so I could read it all over again. My newest adventure in reading is paranormal romance, and I’ve recently become hooked on vampires. Most importantly, I love anything with a good story.

I actually became a writer thanks to reading James Herriot, although at first I wanted to be a writing veterinarian. I settled for journalism and began a sports writer. Currently, I have just released my own fantasy novel and look forward to writing even more.

Chris Galford (galfordc) Hello all, my name's Chris and it's a pleasure to make your acquaintances. I'm originally from Michigan, recently relocated to the beautiful mountains of Colorado. Obviously I'm a lover of literature (why else would I bring my silly self here to this lovely group?), and am an amalgamation of journalist, photographer, and writer on the professional side of things.

In about a month I'll be releasing my own first novel (fantasy, if you're curious), and between the stressful times that come with balancing that and the day-to-day routines, I'm always on the lookout for great new reads across many genres - though I seem to have a penchant for the fantasy and the sci-fi.

Arpita | 1 comments Hi everyone, I am Arpita and I live in Mountain View, California. Being a part of the technology world and used to a fats-paced life, I realized the only thing that keeps me connected to my own self is reading and talking to like-minded people. While people are subject to availability, I figured books are always there. Though I had lost touch with them, loving reviving the bond :). Looking forward to hearing and sharing more on the books we love!

message 923: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl Dunn (SherylinMexico) | 7 comments Hi, Everyone,

Haven't a clue what to do here, other than to share my love of books and great stories.

Lately, all I've been reading are manuscripts (new publisher, first books being released in February), and some are great, and some are...well, let's just say that the writers don't have voices, and should probably remain voiceless!

But this role (as acquisitions editor) really gets me reading outside of my normal genres, and it has been enlightening.

But mysteries, thrillers, and literary novels are my main interests when I'm not reading manuscripts.

I'll probably be mostly asking questions, so here's my first, if you'd like to answer it: what's more important to you, the story or the writing?

Cheers,
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

As a reader, I have to say it's about the story. If the story hooks me then I hardly notice typos or writing errors. If the story is dull or doesn't hold my attention, all those errors seem to just jump off the page at me.

message 925: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl Dunn (SherylinMexico) | 7 comments Thanks, Bridget.

As a reader, I agree - story is everything, and if it grabs me, I can overlook a lot...and have been known to do so, although once I learned about great writing, I found that authors who used to grab my attention now irritate me, and I can't read them any more (Wilbur Smith is one of those - first books great; later books, not so great.)

As a publisher, my dream is to find both - a great story and great writing.

And speaking of that, have to get back to editing...

message 926: by Bridget (new)

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 165 comments I know what you mean, I should be writing, but instead I'm addicted to reading posts on GR.

Maybe as a publisher find someone with a good story and then someone that writes well and put them together. I've heard two heads are better than one.

message 927: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl Dunn (SherylinMexico) | 7 comments I think that's what some publishers and agents do, or so I've heard. However, seems a shame to take a good idea from someone, even if they get credit...unless they agree, of course.

Carole Gill | 4 comments Hello everyone!
Amanda James kindly invited me and I'm delighted to be here.
I am an author (hard working) writing the sequel to my novel and researching like mad for it.
My preferred genre I suppose to read would be gothic. I fell in love with it years ago.
I do enjoy other sorts of books too and still have a soft spot for non-fiction which is great because of all the research I do!

Jade aka MrsTosh (mrstosh) Hi Guys, I have just joined this group although I have been on goodreads for some time :) I am a total bookworm and read everyday. Emily E (emily_e1) | 262 comments Sheryl wrote: "I'll probably be mostly asking questions, so here's my first, if you'd like to answer it: what's more important to you, the story or the writing?..."

Good question!

I am all about the story but it is totally tied into the writing. It is so disappointing to me when I good story is ruined by bad writing (read here: bad editing).

I am prepared to self edit as I read, up to a point; but while I might accept that on a first book I'm not going to do it indefinitely no matter how intriguing your story idea might be. If you have a great story concept but no writing skill (or anyone that will read your book once and point out your typos/bad language, mindless repetition, etc) then give it to someone who can make it something worthy!

A good story can be ruined by bad writing. 'You can't have one without the other" ;)

message 939: by Carole (new)

Carole Gill | 4 comments Thank you for the welcome, Kyle!

About the writing and story--I agree, a great story can be ruined by bad writing.

But the best writing in the world needs a good story!
Having said that, I think a story can be so simple as to be nearly a non story--with me it's the characters that make or break a story.

My fiction is character driven and I prefer to read that sort of fiction as well.

As for editing, I do my best but always defer to an editor!

Gerald Griffin (authorgeraldggriffin) | 35 comments Hi, fellow bookaholics! I'm a brand new member to this group and delighted to be here to share with you. I choose to introduce myself by bringing attention to my current book tour for my suspense thriller OF GOOD AND EVIL.

Interested in a profound, reflective atmosphere, where you can cuddle and read something astonishing challenging your imagination, making your time spent more than worthwhile; time taking you into a world beyond imagination?!

If so, then I invite you to share company with the sages of OF GOOD AND EVIL, those oracles who know this gripping world intimately.

Where do you sign up? You don't. Rather, you simply click, http://nurtureyourbooks.com/vbtblog/?... , your gateway to this world. First you are warmly greeted by a beautiful banner of harmony that will introduce you to your guiding hosts, each eagerly awaiting you to share their secrets.

You're then taken just below, into the Room of Wisdom. There, in continuing harmony, you'll find listed the first names of your sagacious hosts, each waiting to patiently share with you the pleasure of their wisdom. But they are there only for a short while, from November 7 to the 18th of this year, available on different dates within this time frame. Then they are gone, their Room of Wisdom closed for all eternity.

Below the name of each host on the day of his or her appearance is the designation of their room. By clicking this designation you immediately find yourself in another room, one unique in its grand design, its grandeur embracing you with serene nobility. Your welcoming host graciously greets you, ready to unveil the unimaginable.

What happens next you will have to expreience first firsthand. My gift to you.
