The Daisy Field

message 804: by Al (new)

Al | 52 comments I guess something's wrong with me. I've lived through a lot o' crapola, and today's crop of news is bounteous with more. I'm tired of it.

I don't want to read agonized stories of disfunctional people/families, no matter how literary. I hate advertisements, hidden agendas, and being stroked to some end. I just want to be entertained, with good characters and a good story. I'd prefer that the story not be done by template, like the troubled detective finding clues that point to his/her own past, or the ONE man/woman, who can save the nation/world/universe/galaxy despite seemingly insuperable odds. I don't care for instant intergalactic communication, slashers, serial killers, zombies, werewolves, vampires, or magicians, though I don't mind a little magical realism (like in Face of an Angel). I suspect that Cormac McCarthy might benefit from therapy or lithium tablets, and James Patterson is really the name of a giant corporation. It even crossed my mind that the author of The Help, which I did enjoy, is partly glorifying herself.

I guess I'm just a crusty curmudgeon. No wonder I have trouble finding good books.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hello! My name is DeeDee, I'm 24 and love reading....so do I pass? I had better come clean now and tell you that I'm a writer as well, don't hold it against me!!!! Looking forward to making new friends!

message 806: by Amy (last edited Sep 24, 2011 06:34PM) (new)

Amy Sutton (amysutton) | 8 comments This is precisely why I wrote "The Daisy Field." I, too, am sick of sensationalizing the negative in life. There is so much good; so much that is positive. Why can't we capitalize on that? This group is lucky to have you, Al. Welcome!

Amy Sutton (amysutton) | 8 comments See my comment above. Again, we welcome members like Al.

message 808: by Al (new)

Al | 52 comments Thank you, folks. I really am glad to find a happy group of readers like this. I didn't mean to sound too grouchy above. I'm not really a grouch--just picky, I guess. In the slices of time I have for online matters I shall explore more of this haven's subgroups, and perhaps find tips to some great recreational, but not trivial, reading. See you there!

message 809: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hello Al! I understand what you mean! Reading is escapism, I don't really want to read gritty realism! I want a good story, nice characters. To me the most important thing is that the characters behave realistically, and it's important that I like them.I hate reading stories that when you really look at it, there isn't any hero, no one nice, and yet you've chosen to spend hours with these awful people?!?!

Sebastian (sepp86) | 8 comments My name is Sebastian and i am from Germany. I joined goodreads today because i look for good books to read and this website might help with that. I read more english then german books.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hi Sebastian! My names DeeDee and I'm from England, I'm a newbie too. What sort of books do you like?

message 812: by Sebastian (new)

Sebastian (sepp86) | 8 comments Hi DeeDee, i like crime and fantasy novels and classics too. And I am a student at an university, so i should add non-fiction as well. Some examples: books by Raymond Chandler, Terry Pratchett, G.R.R. Martin, Dostoyevsky, Henry Miller and John Irving. Glen Cooks "Black Company" Novels, Scott Lynchs "Locke Lamora". It's difficult to say which is my favorite one, but "war and peace" by Leo Tolstoi is one of the best reads i ever had. As i said, i read english and german, so Tolstoi, Dostoyevsky, Eco, Cervantes or Aragon i read translated.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Wow! Talk about diversity! I'm a sucker for a romance! I don't need the story to be all about romance but I like a little bit, I really love stories about friendship too. I like Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Elisabeth Gaskell and Georgette Heyer! Also fond of Lucy Walker!

message 814: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Everyone!
I'm Vaiolet, 20, from Sydney, Australia.
I love anything that has to do with psychology and dramas, but also romance, crime, thrillers, biographies, horror, history, general non-fiction, ...as long as it can be read and it gives me something (either emotions or education), than I can read it. I am not a fan of the new science fiction/mystery YA books but I always accept a challenge. Well, I hope to meet some new people and get inspired by you all!

message 815: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hello Vaiolet! My name is DeeDee and I'm 24, I'm from England. Are you a Writer as well as a Reader?

message 816: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi DeeDee, you're new too I see! Oh no, I don't write, I have tried several times but I am not confident enough to save whatever I write (unless it's school-related): it is very very weird to re-read my thoughts on paper, I know it can't be anywhere near good the first time around but I am somewhat of a perfectionist. I guess you are a writer, what's your genre? :)

message 817: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Yes I write, please don't hold it against me! I write romantic adventure, I have a book out that is set in the near future, another which I'm hoping to upload in a month or so thats set in saxon England and is the start of a series and lastly I'm halfway through my third which is also the start of a series but this time set in the distant future! Hope all that info didn't bore you but I tend to get easily carried away! What are your favourate books?
P.S. I love your cup cake!!!

message 818: by [deleted user] (new)

WOW. I am now speechless and might be excused to go out of the door and cry :D I wish you all the best with your books, let me know when they come over to Australia (I am so not a ereader person, I am trying to modernize myself lately but it's not working as well as it should!). My favorite books, uhm, that's a hard question. I have recently read The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had which I loved, it was a story of friendship between a white boy, Dit, and a black girl, Emma, and how they grew up trying to make sense of race issues. I used to love Chuck Palahniuk's books (especially Invisible Monsters and Lullaby) but that was some years ago, I might have to re-read them now. I was never introduced to classics, but I am slowly trying to get around them. Oh! Wait! Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. I loved that book so much! Talking of getting carried away...

message 819: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments I have a Kindle Vaiolet and I love it! Yes it has a few problems but it has storage for a thousand books!!! I can have oldies, new ones and I can try new authors! If you like a little humor to your Regency Roms you could try Georgette Heyer, I love her sense of humor! I also have to tell you that I like Lucy Walker, she's an australian writer from the 60s I think. If you like I can give you a PDF copy of my book to help you get on the digital band wagon (with absolutely no strings attached!!!) You'll have to read it on the computer or ipad but it's there if you want it!
P.S. did you make the Cup Cake and if so does that mean you're a chef, (or is it baker)?

message 820: by [deleted user] (new)

I am taking notes, I am trying to get back to my old reading habits and recs are great! Actually, I'll send you a PM.
Yes the cupcake is mine! I would love to open my own little sweet bakery from home (it might even happen as soon as in a month or two actually), I absolutely love cooking, especially baking cakes *-* But exams and saving money have slowed down my cooking, too. Hate being a student!

message 821: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments I love cooking too Vaiolet! Every year I make biscuits for my Uncles to take to an important business show that they go to, I decorate them with the company logo!!! I find most girls our age look at me oddly when I tell them I like to cook, doesn't stop them eating what we make does it?!?! The Cup Cake is beautiful! I really hope that you find success with your home bakery, home made things tastes so much better than shop stuff and I'm sure people will appreciate the difference and come back for more!
P.S. I've sent you an e-mail with the book attached, I hope it reaches you safely and that you enjoy reading it!

Karen I've been on GoodReads for several months now and I've decided to join a couple of groups. I like women's fiction and suspense, which I think might be an odd combo. What do you think?

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Sounds good to me Karen! Do you write as well?

message 824: by Al (new)

Totally agree! Baking and reading are not some of the favorite pastimes for people our age anymore, which is a pity! Thanks for the book, I'll start it as soon as my currently reading list shortens a bit :)

Karen wrote: "I've been on GoodReads for several months now and I've decided to join a couple of groups. I like women's fiction and suspense, which I think might be an odd combo. What do you think?"

I don't think that's odd either, as an omnivorous reader, I can pair romance and psychopaths just fine :)

Your cupcake looks so tempting. I have a major sweet tooth. I like baking only because I like eating. I'd love to know: what's your favorite part about cooking?

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Karen, let me seeeee! I like the oldies, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen and such, I liked John Grishams earlier work but I think he has ghost writers now. I recently read a book by a indie author called S.G Alan, 'The Sooner', which was really good fun. It was an adventure romance which is my favourate combo!

I think the genre "adventure romance" sounds interesting. I'm not familiar with that.

I don't know when these came along, but they're not rare. I've written several myself.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments What, you mean EVER?!?!?

message 838: by Al (new)

Al | 52 comments I'd like to thank D.d. for her suggestion of Georgette Heyer. It turns out that Heyer, born in 1902, actually invented the Signet Regency Romance--but hers are head and shoulders better than others of those I've read. Thanks, D.d.! (Someone, probably a corporation, is still making big bucks off the Kindle editions of her works. If I read any more, I think I'll go to the used book market. Blasted Kindle pirates!) I'll do a review of The Quiet Gentleman when I've finished it....

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hi Al! I'm so glad you liked them! I've thought of some more authors that I don't think I mentioned the first time, Alister Meclean who writes adventure, P.G. Wodehouse who's Jeeves and Wooster series is hilarious and James Herriot who writes of his life as a vet in the Dales also very funny!

message 840: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hi Melissa! My name is DeeDee, I'm from England and I'm an indie writer too. What sort of genre do you write in and who do you read?

message 841: by Al (new)

Al | 52 comments I've read Herriot; very entertaining. Wodehouse was one of my dad's favorites. I'll take a look at Meclean. Thanks!

message 842: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments I write romantic adventure Melissa. My first book is set after a banking crisis and tells the story of Deeta, a woman born after the world has gone mad, and her friendship with Tom, her best friend. This is the link:Broken City. My second story is set in saxon England and tells how a single battle changes the course of the hero and heroines lives.

As for what I read, I'll read almost anything that has romance and adventure in it! I love Georgette Heyer, Lucy Walker and more recently an indie author named S.G. Alan. Her book 'the sooner' was great fun, I LOVED the crazy Doc! here's the link:The Sooner. An don't worry about your problem! I re-read my favourates so often I can quote them word for word!!!

Dorie (dorieann) Hi everyone, I just joined. This looked like a great, well-rounded group. I’m an eclectic reader but have lately veered toward historical mysteries and just can't seem to get enough of them. But I enjoy books from all genres. Horror is probably my least favorite because I’m a complete weenie and easily frightened, but I have read and liked Dean Koontz. I currently own two e-readers that I love, a Nook Color and a Nook Simple Touch.

Some of my favorite authors are: Michael Connelly, Diana Gabaldon, Steve Kluger, John Hart, Mark Billingham, J.D. Robb, Charles Finch, Louise Penny, and two that I’ve discovered through their e-books, Ashley Gardner and P.B. Ryan. (I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you.) I’m looking forward to some great conversations and recommendations.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 125 comments Hi Dorie! I'm DeeDee and I'm from England. I'm with you on the Horror! Freaks me out! I have a kindle e-reader but I've always wondered: What's the difference between a kindle and a nook?

message 847: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) Hi DeeDee! Honestly there's not too much differences between e-readers. Most of the differences are superficial and based on personal preferences. They all get the job done! Kindle is attached to Amazon.com and the Nook is attached to Barnes & Noble. It makes the Nook more popular here in the U.S. than it would be in other countries. I like taking my Nook directly to a store if I have a question or problem though.

I see! I know the formating is different for a nook because I had to have my book formatted differently for a nook to a kindle. Smashwords.com do e-books for nook, Dorie.

message 849: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) D.d. wrote: "I see! I know the formatting is different for a nook because I had to have my book formatted differently for a nook to a kindle."

Yes, the kindle's proprietary ebook format is the primary reason I went with the nook instead, to be honest. That and the fact I didn't like the keyboard on the original device. The new crop of kindle devices look good though.
