I'm desperately searching for a book that was read to me when I was a child. The first problem: It was in German and I don't know if it was a translation or if there is an English translation of it. I already tried to find the title on German websites, but nobody could help. So this is definitively a long shot. But I'm a stubborn person.
The second problem: I don't remember a lot of details.
What I remember:
There was a girl that asked herself, what was on the point where the river touched the horizon. And if the river gets narrower if you get closer to that point. She then sets of to a journey on the river, sitting in a tub, a bucket or some other improvised vessel. And I think Í remember she picked up a pig somewhere along the way that then traveled with it, and there might have been other travel companions as well.

So, that is it. I know it's pretty vague and maybe I don't even remember it right. But if someone is actually able to help me out he would be my hero.

Thanks for reading!

15-18 years ago, I don't remember how old I was exactly.

Amanda (misterfive) | 215 comments Well, this is a very very long shot, but I offer the information for what it is worth: the last time someone asked about a river journey and a pig, it turned out to be The House of Sixty Fathers by De Jong. That's about a Chinese boy, though, and he gets separated from his family on the river as they are fleeing Japanese soldiers.

(Edited to add: Interestingly, that person thought it was a girl main character as well.)

The House of Sixty Fathers for the click for Amanda's suggestion.

No I don't think that's it. I was only 6 or 7 years, maybe 8 but not older, and that doesn't sound like something my father would have read to me at that age. He was a little overprotective in certain aspects, and wouldn't have told me a story about war and people killing each other. (I just read the first few pages of the book on Amazon, and nothing rings a bell.)

Thank you nevertheless! It's fascinating that there always seems to be a book that fits some "random" headwords.

oh yes!

Have you remembered any other details?

Was it set 15-18 years ago, or farther in the past?

Sarah Holland | 134 comments A girl and a pig makes me think of this book series - Pigs Don't Fly, but it's been quite a while since I read them. I know there's a journey, and a pig, and a river, but that's about it!

Peggy Myers | 4 comments Is it a boy looking for a pig? Set in a fantasy world? It could be a first in a series. Series is Chronicles of Prydain. 1st book is The Book of Three.
