2014 Harlequin Presents Readers Word Search Challenge

Duration: January 1, 2014 to July 1, 2014

Introduction: Harlequin Presents books offer several layers of fun. With the exciting storylines, and interesting titles, fans can enjoy the books and realize that the more drama involved the better. With this challenge, we will celebrate the dramatic titles and storylines.

Instructions:

1. Books must be read between January 1 and July 1 of 2014.
2. Books must be Harlequin Presents titles or if originally Mills and Boon, they must be slated for the Harlequin Presents line when released in the United States. Foreign editions count so long as they meet the above guidelines.
3. One book counts for one part of the challenge—no book can be used more than once. Multiple books by the same author are allowed.
4. Books used for this challenge are eligible for overlap in any other group challenges.
5. Members should sign up for the challenge on this thread and post their initial and final stats when they are finished. You can change your level at any time.
6. Any questions??

Levels:

Level I— No Word Search Can Conquer: 30 or more books (any above thirty must be words you come up with and list in your stats).
Level II— I’m Pretty Good at This Title Game: 29-15 books
Level III— I’m in This for a Lark: 14-7 books

How this challenge will work:

1. Part of the challenge is to solve the word search puzzle, at least for as many books as you plan to read. If you solve for more, you only get official challenge credit for the number of books you read, other than a pat on the back for being a word search guru. I will give you a clue, there are thirty words somewhat commonly used in Harlequin Presents titles. So at a maximum, you can solve for these words and use these in your challenge.

You can find a larger picture of the challenge board here:

http://www.pinterest.com/pin/27584616...

I have also uploaded a copy to the group in the photos section, here:

https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...

I'm sorry it came out so small. I'm still learning how to manipulate and post graphics online.

Feel free to copy and paste this into a Word file or whatever you like and print it out to solve at your leisure. You need not post a picture of the solved puzzle unless you like. It's sufficient to post the list of words and the book you read for each word.

2. The next part of the challenge is to read one book for each word in the challenge based on the level you’re signing up for. The book title must have the word solved for in the puzzle to count for this challenge. No exceptions, other than any bonus words above the 30 available in the puzzle. Lowest level is seven books. Highest level is thirty books, with the possibility of adding seven additional words that you come up with (and books read for those words).

3. At the end of the challenge (at or after July 1st, 2014), I will post the puzzle solution. I will not give you the solution prior to this. If members want to help each other out, please put your ponderings in a spoiler tag or keep them off the official challenge thread (I suggest using the private message system). We don’t want to spoil the fun of the challenge for others, so we are going to be strict about this. Therefore, if your ponderings are not in spoiler tags, and they are not part of your official stats for the challenge, they will be deleted.

Update to Challenge:
****Attention: Word Search Clue: I can’t tell you the words in the puzzle, but I will give you an opportunity to compare your finds to the list of words. You just have to solve for them. Sorry. I’m not trying to be cruel, but the goal is to give this challenge a bit more challenge. I will give you one to three letters in each word.

**A hint for you: the terms are very related to the tone and theme of the Harlequin Presents line. None of the terms are general, but each one is very related to this line and is in fact part of existing titles to books in the Harlequin Presents line.

Sudakshina Happy New Year, Danielle. Another new year, another new HP challenge. Count me in for Level 1. ( I am aiming for the sky, though I have found only half of the words.) But this sounds really interesting.

I have a question though. How do the words go? While solving the puzzle I realized that some of the words might go across or back, up or down and diagonally up or down in the grid.

Asterope (21tauri) | 82 comments Happy New Year everyone!

KatieV | 141 comments question- as far as matching book titles to words in the search. how strict are we being re tense, etc. For example, if one of the words is 'blackmail' (hypothetically speaking, of course) - would a title like 'The Greek's Blackmailed Mistress' Secret Baby of Shame' be acceptable?

message 24: by Leona (new)

Leona (wdwcbm) | 373 comments Wow that one has at least 4 or more words in it! Can one title count for more than one word?

message 25: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Harlequin Presents are my crack! (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 2281 comments Mod
@ KatieV, I think you can count a different tense of the word.

@ Leona, I'm not sure I understand the question. Sorry!

@ Leona, If you're asking how I count each word/book, here's an example not using any words in the puzzle. One word in the puzzle should be used in one book towards the challenge. If you solve and use all the words in the puzzle, you'd end up with 30 books in your final finished stats.

Danielle's HP Word Search Challenge

Level: No Word Search Can Conquer

Update: 1/8/14

Completed: 3/30

1. Dancing with the Dangerous Hero (word: Dancing) 1/1
2. Living on the Edge (word: Living) 1/2
3. This Heartbreaking Rogue (word: Heartbreaker) 1/6

Does that answer your question?

message 27: by Leona (new)

Leona (wdwcbm) | 373 comments thanks! that explains it. one book for each word.

Asterope (21tauri) | 82 comments Danielle The Book Huntress (Angels Weep For Goodreads) wrote: "3. This Heartbreaking Rogue (word: Heartbreaker) 1/6"

This was one of the things I wondered about.

So if the word in the search is "Heartbreaker," can we use other forms: Heartbreaking, Heartbreak, etc? Or for say, "Laugh" - would Laughs and Laughed also apply? Or does it have to be the exact same?

message 29: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 09, 2014 07:30AM) (new)

I got a question. I am having a really hard time with this word seard. To me, it seems a row or line is missing. I have only found two lines that have a "v" in it with no "r" anywhere around it. Hence, the word _ _ V_ R. Am I the only one or is anyone else having the same problem.

message 30: by Sudakshina (new)

Sudakshina U _ _ _ M _ _ _ _ (9 letters)

Is it a 9 letter word or 7?

Me too!! Glad I'm not the only one

@Onu - I did find a 9 letter word that fit that hint.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

oh good someone else is having this problem.

The U _ _ _ M _ _ _ _ is 9 letters. I have that one found.

message 33: by Sudakshina (new)

Sudakshina @Katie V and Mary: Way to go, girls! I am still struggling with that one. It is driving me crazy. :D

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel much better that it is not just me. There are several words (8) I am struggling with. I have even gone as far as to go to Harlequin and look at titles to try and help me. It didn't work.

Mary, I've found most of them (think I'm down to 3 or so). Some of your missing ones are likely backwards. The backwards diagonal ones are especially tricky.

However, I agree with you the word _ _ V_ R does not appear to be there. I've looked numerous times.

message 39: by Leona (new)

Leona (wdwcbm) | 373 comments I found 26, have four more to go...but I can't find that one.

message 40: by KatieV (new)

KatieV | 141 comments Daniel - another question.

I found a word that matches the first one in the list

A_ _ _ _ R (5 letters) - However, it looks like it should be six letters if you go by the 4 blanks between A and R. So, not sure if I've solved that one or not.

P.S. I feel like we are bombarding you with questions and frustrations. I know you put a lot of work into this - so, thank you! :)

To answer your question, Asterope, it can be a different conjugation of a verb with the same meaning. So, I am going to prevail on the good player ethics of the participants to make sure they don't stray too far from what the original form of the verb/word form is in the word search challenge.
