message 702: by Esther (last edited Mar 17, 2014 09:49AM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I am reading Les visages de l'humanité for the monthly challenge. As all of his previous thrillers, I cannot put it down.
I received a book I had request via an interlibrary loan. I started it but the first book wins. This does not seem to have been translated into English yet. I think I am in for a treat with this one. It's L’homme qui savait la langue des serpents(The Man Who Spoke Snakish), by an Estonian novelist.

Audiobook: I am listening to The Drawing of the Three, the 2nd book of the Dark tower series.

It wasn't horrible. It was just "meh". You may like it better than me.

I've only returned books that I've abandoned in the first hour because of truly nasty narration. I'm reluctant to return books because I might feel differently about them at another date. One notable example was Hounded. The first time I attempted it, I gave up within an hour thinking it was totally stupid. Then, after reading peoples' comments here, I decided to give it another go and loved it the second time around.

I enjoyed this trilogy, though Feed did get off to a slow start. The last book, Blackout, was the best of the three. I think the author got much better at writing as she went along.

message 705: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished all of my other books but One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Good Earth - which I am only listening to part time.
However - I discovered Patrick O'Brian and his Aubrey/Maturin series over the weekend. I listened to #5 Desolation Island all day Saturday. I am currently listening to Master and Commander - which is #1. Yes, I saw the movie with Russel Crow, but the book, especially in audio is SO MUCH MORE!!!!

This is good to know. I'll feel a little safer carrying on with it.

message 707: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't think I ever mentioned I finished Suspect this was a good and fast read. Seems like this group had some members maybe Almeta? I can't remember who like books with a dogs point of view. This one had it. No corny dog dialect just what the dog is probably feeling as it was a military working dog in Afghanistan then a police dog in LA. Both the dog and main human character suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. It was worth the time.

I'll keep this in mind. I just picked up Feed the other day.

message 709: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I've started chunkster no.4 which is The Shadow of the Wind.

message 710: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished The Return of the Dancing Master. It was my first Henning Mankell and it will be my last.

I've started The Cold Dish. The narrator has embodied the character. This book could fit in with our indigenous peoples theme.

message 711: by Esther (new)

Esther (estame) I feel like I am reading everything at the moment -
The Bronze Horseman, The Well of Ascension, The People in the Trees, A Suitable Boy and A History of the World in 100 Objects - I'm just picking one of them up and reading 20 pages and switching to the next one. I'm in a weird reading mood.

message 712: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Rusalka - I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of it!

@Janice - let's hope you're next book is better than the Mankell one!

@Esta - I too seem to have a lot of books on the go at the moment although I managed to finish a couple yesterday which makes it a bit easier. You have a few chunksters going there!

message 713: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Janice, I know what you mean about Mankell. I'm reading The Man from Beijing and struggling a bit. But I'm half way through so I won't quit. Plus it's half of a chunkster selection.
I get into those modes too, Esta, and find I have a lot of books at various stages of "readness", if you know what I mean. Right now I have the Mankell book, The Paris Architect, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Sands of the Kalahari, and I finished rereading Cinder and Scarlet so I can read Cress. Hopefully I'll be finished something by the weekend.

It is weird reading like that, but it works for me sometimes too, Esta. Isn't it amazing how you can still pick right back up in the story of each one after the shuffling around?

message 715: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I find some books I just can't listen to in the afternoon so its easier to listen in the morning and a different one in the afternoon then pick up a paper or kindle book at night. And yes unless they are very similar books it is easy to keep them straight

message 716: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Master and Commander early this morning and started listening to Post Captain today at noon.

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments Hello everyone,

Is being a couple of hard weeks for me, haven't done a lot of reading, I was in the hospital last week, got out on Thursday. Here is what I have been reading:
I finally finished The Bronze Horseman, another of Paullina Simons book that I loved.
⇛ For the month of March for another group I'm reading:
The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman, Duchess By Night by Eloisa James, and finished today Night Road by Kristin Hannah.
⇛ For a RaBF of another group I'm working on Bag of Bones by Stephen King.
⇛ And finally, tomorrow I have to pick up my next book for the Chunkters; The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments It's good to see you here, Michelle, and that you are out of the hospital. I hope you are well on the road to recovery.

I was looking at Alice Hoffman's books earlier this evening. Have you started The Ice Queen? I'll be interested in what you have to say about it.

Hospital stays are no good. You would think you would get a lot of reading done, since you've nothing else to do, but with all the poking and prodding and strange surroundings there is nothing to do but be bored!

Stay away from there!☺

I think that there is a Buddy Read for The Book Thief, that was started about a week and a half ago. Why not join in on that?

I really enjoyed reading that book.

I remember when my brother started reading this series. Once he started, he couldn't stop! Over 20 books - you might be in for the long haul, Cherie!

message 723: by Mari (new)

Mari I've just finished The Book Thief, on audio. I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more through reading. I listen in transit to work(60 miles round trip), and it makes me wonder if I lose some of the richness of the books that way. Now I'm listening to Middlesex. I've started reading The Cider House Rules, and I'm a bit surprised how much I'm enjoying it! The characters are so lovable!!

I am almost done with Post Captain. I am listening at lunch time. I have the next ready to go. :)

I amlost like the 2nd one better than the 1st! It is not just the wonderful characters, but I just love the sea lore and all the talk about the boats and the naval service.

message 725: by Travis (new)

I found the second one better as well. And from a few conversations I've had it seems to be a common opinion.

Sarah | 18550 comments I started my No Place Like Home book The Shock of the Fall. So far so good but I'm only read 30 pages. It's quite sad! Fingers crossed I'll get it done by the end of the month.

I am still reading The Golem and the Jinni which I am loving and I am due to start another buddy read next week for American Gods.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Besides my Dostoyevsky I'm mainly reading sports scores. Its march madness! Sure I've only got $5 on my bracket but add that to other years when I've laid down $10-$15 and lost every year I gotta be a good $50-$75 in the hole so need to win that pool of $100-$125 this year. Not getting my hopes up.

He had a Jilly Cooper on his shelf? Interesting...
Are you enjoying your chick lit in the Cotswolds with riding crops and stirrups and I am totally stopping.

message 733: by [deleted user] (new)

He has a wide range of reading material on "his" shelves. In fact he reads far more books that might be thought primarily female than I do. I'm 75 pages in and we've had our first tumble in the hay. I assume that more will follow...

I didn't really explain myself. I am not a fan of dividing books by gender at all. While slightly amused and shocked he had a Jilly Cooper book on his shelf, it actually endears him to me a heap more!

You are correct, there was hay involved as well as sex. It sounded most uncomfortable to me, the floor of the stables (even when covered in hay) doesn't sound in the least bit attractive. *rolls eyes*
