That will do it. Sleepytime tea and valerian are my friends at those times. Actually, after the fifth time of that dream cycle, I did take a valerian while walking around the house.

Was it a good read besides the crazy dreams?

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Our messages crossed and I missed the one about the coconut chicken.

My dream was about some psycho mass murderer who abducted a bunch of people. It was craziness - shooting, blowing things up, lots and lots of booze once the bad guy was dead. Except no proof of his death was ever found. I did get a massage in the last part of the dream.

Oh, and yes, the book was really good! Love the way Bradbury writes.

I'm 100 pages in and it's not as good as I was hoping but maybe it'll get better!

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Read Gonna Roll the Bones by Fritz Leiber for a teeny tiny connection in my Chunkster Challenge. It won the 1967 Best Novelet Nebula Award (SciFi).

Read Shalimar the Clown, primarily for the Chunkster Challenge but it helped out in the Land Far Away and the Yearbook Challenge as well. Almeta's Shalimar Review

Finished The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones, also a Chunkster read.
Almeta's Raw Head Review

Off to find some Pablum for BoogeyMan recovery!☻

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Oh wait! I have to start Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.

My nerves are going to have to last for a while longer.

message 657: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Started Doctor Zhivago yesterday. Russian literature usually demands my full attention. Starting this book I thought wow this is so easy to follow. I'll be damned if I'm not lost and struggling to follow the story at this point. Hoping I can get back on track with it today or maybe it'll be one where I get to the end and realize it just all was over my head. Time will tell

message 658: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Travis - I do not have a copy on hand any more, but I read - or tried to read Doctor Zhivago many years ago. I do remember being cofused about parts that I struggled to comprehend. I am pretty sure I gave up the struggle and called it quits before I ever got to the end. I tried to love the book, like the music to the movie, but remember only sadness when I think of this story.

message 659: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Sometimes I'm list other times I feel like I get it. I searched a bunch of various groups who had it as a group read at some point. Very few people participated in any of the groups . Almost everyone was confused and I'd say half didn't finish. Those who did finish gave it a 1,2 or 3 with only a couple giving a 4 or 5. After all that I'll finish it but if I don't get it by the end I won't feel too bad. Looks like many fail at it.

message 660: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Something Wicked This Way Comes just became available through my library. I've downloaded it onto my new Kindle. Hope I sleep tonight.

message 661: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I'm also rereading Cinder and I'll follow it with a retread of Scarlet. I put a hold on Cress through my library thinking it would take ages to get to my name but I got an email sooner than I anticipated. I had to give it up because I was out of the country and couldn't pick it up. Just as well because I've forgotten part of the story so I better retread the first two. Hazard of a series.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I started Orphan Train on audiobook earlier today. Not sure if I'm going to enjoy this. We'll see.

Suzanne | 1255 comments Janice wrote: "I started Orphan Train on audiobook earlier today. Not sure if I'm going to enjoy this. We'll see."

I have this on my kindle, but haven't read it yet. I like the idea of the plot, but I have a feeling it's going to be a 3 star book for me (aka beach read). I'll be interested to know what you think of it, Janice.

message 666: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Tasha wrote: "I was one of those people who loved Doctor Zhivago."

I was thinking maybe I am just too ignorant of Russian history to fully grasp it. So I wonder if you are knowledgeable in Russian history or is it me just not getting the writing itself .

message 667: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I've never watched doctor Zhivago and I've seen some people say they understood the book better by watching the movie first

message 668: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have Orphan Train on my ereader too and I'm looking forward to reading it. Curious to hear your thoughts Janice!

With a lot of difficulties I took a short break from Gone with the Wind to read for the monthly challenge, but I finished it so I can get back to GwtW, yay!!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Emperor's Blades which I rated 4 stars. This is the first book in a new high fantasy series and I really enjoyed it. I really liked the world-building and the characters and I am looking forward to seeing how the story will continue in Book 2 (which sadly isn't published until early next year). Here is my short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting Half Bad which I am really excited about.

That looks really good, I had to add it to the overflowing TBR.

message 672: by Michelle T. (new)

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments Well I have my hands full right now, I'm reading:
1. The Death Dealer by Heather Graham.
2. Night Road by Kristin Hannah, for another group challenge.
3. Bag of Bones by Stephen King, for another book challenge.
4. Today I started True Love: Three Novels by Lurlene McDaniel, for pleasure.
5. A Taste of Pearl by Arianne Richmonde, for a group challenge.

However, I can't decided yet which one I like the most. They are all different romance, mystery, and suspense.

message 673: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I decided to abandon The Shining Girls audio as it really wasn't doing it for me. I'd listened to about 45 minutes of it. I've decided to listen to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian instead for this mothers group read other books - it's nice and short too! I would change it's status to "currently reading" but Goodreads seems to be playing up and won't let me add any books to "currently reading" - it was like it last night before I went to bed and is still doing it now. Anyone else having this problem? I was able to move the shining girls to my abandoned shelf though!

Tasha Travis of NNY wrote: "Tasha wrote: "I was one of those people who loved Doctor Zhivago."

Well, I am Russian (although born here, 1st gen) and grew up pretty immersed in the culture so I'm sure that must help on some level. I do read alot of Russian stories and know a bit about the history so maybe that helped. My mom and aunt loved the movie and the book so maybe it's in the genes too. ;)

I also loved Crime and Punishment. Now that is a book that I know for sure I loved bc of my Russian upbringing. lol

message 675: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Crime and Punishment is my favorite. Dostoyevsky I can understand and next book up to bat is The Idiot starting this morning.

message 676: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished my "no place like home" challenge read, From Away. I didn't realize when I started reading the book that it was a romance. I wouldn't have read it if I had figured it out. But it was a good thing because I rather enjoyed it, in spite of my genre prejudices.

I'm not sure what I'll start next.

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I am starting The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress. I don't remember putting it on hold at the library but I did. I will start listening to it today.
Need to start Winter Garden for my challenge too.

Sarah | 18550 comments Casceil wrote: "Sarah @675: You are not alone. I tried to add a new currently reading book last night, and was unsuccessful."

Yes I looked on the Goodreads Feedback Group and saw that lots of people were having the same problem. It only happens when I try to remove books from my wishlist or change books in my wishlist to "to read" or "currently reading". It seems the name wishlist is the problem. I changed the title of mine to my-wishlist and it works fine now! How bizarre!

message 680: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Last night, whenever I added a book to my wishlist, I got an error message saying that there was an error. Yet, if I refreshed the page, is showed as added.

I haven't read anything else by him in recent years. I believe I read The Brothers Karamazov years ago when I was a teen. My parents had all those russian classics on the shelves. Enjoy!

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I started The Angry Hills last night for my left over stew challenge. It was left over from the Around the World Challenge. I was quickly pulled into the story and had a hard time putting it down.

message 683: by Mari (last edited Mar 13, 2014 04:11PM) (new)

Mari I just finished Look Homeward, Angel, and it was wonderful!! I went on a tour in Asheville, N.C., that provoked my curiosity of this book. I have to admit it's the most challenging read I've ever had. Once I got used to his writing, I became very fulfilled. I do believe that this book is not for everyone, but for you extreme literary fans, it's absolutely magnificent. It has prompted me to read more of his stuff, but not right away. It's dense material and takes time to get through. I am definitely looking for an easy read next, such as The Cider House Rules!!

message 684: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I just got a book I had requested via an inter-library loan. So I guess this one will have to take first place on my books. This is a first for me, the page numbers are in the middle of the right border of each page. Anyone has seen this before?

I read it years and years ago so don't remember it too well, but. I love Leon Uris' books. Enjoy.

I've just finished The Afrika Reich, an alternative history set in Africa and based on a defeat of Britain after Dunkirk. It wasn't great. In fact if you ever find yourself on a desert island with this book, go ahead and light a fire with it.

message 688: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished Orphan Train last night and gave it 3.5 stars. It was an okay read. I thought it a bit predictable.

Next up is The Return of the Dancing Master.

message 689: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments Thanks Helen. The Afrika Reich won't be going on my TBR.

ROFL!!! That made my morning, Helen! Yeah, not on my shelf either, unless I create one called fire-starter-material. I have two or three other titles that I could add to it though. :)

Yeah, I wish I hadn't wasted a credit on it.... not that it was bad, but there are so many other titles on my audible wishlist that would be more deserving of the credit.

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished listening to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for other books within the indigenous people theme. So for my next audio fix I will be listening to The Garden of Evening Mists. I have also started The Golem and the Jinni which is a chunkster and also a buddy read.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Half Bad which I rated 5 stars. I am not the biggest fan of books about witches but I really enjoyed this one. I will definitely be reading the sequel. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now going back to the Chunkster challenge by starting The Pillars of the Earth.

Later today, I'll dive back into my chunkster challenge and Jo Nesbo with Nemesis.

message 699: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Finished Feed which I thought was going to be one and done for this series as it just wasn't giving me a reason to care yo read the next 2. Now I don't know. The story picked up in the last 1/3 of the book and I think maybe if book 2 pops up in a sale I'll carry on with it. Probably worth a 3.5. Now I'll probably work on The Idiot a bit more and then start Dust (Wool, #9). Also working on Something Wicked This Way Comes

message 700: by Diane (new)

Diane I made an honest attempt at Ahab's Wife. I have not left a book unfinished for probably 10 years. I could not do it anymore. I love the challenge of a big book, but there comes a time when you have to take your life back into your own hands. :-)
