Iluta Abolina Story's absolutely amazing! The imminence of death and finality, laced with sardonically bitter ironies - what's there to hate?! Characters tagged with an expiration date are singularly the most charming tool to depict the fact that life and death is not as juxtaposed as we like to believe; and that the state of deterioration can bring a lot of positive things and bright emotion into the final stretch.

message 356: by [deleted user] (new)

I completely agree with your hatred for this book. It's so overrated and annoying.

I'm glad people like it, but I just really never want to pick up a copy of it ever again. And I sure won't be seeing the movie.

(And btw I literally threw it across the room)

message 357: by Kelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kelly Duncan yes...yes, you are. Ahaa, no I respect your opinion, but I read it not long after it came out, and was the first book to properly make me cry, so I will always have a soft spot for it.

Seriously. The ending wasn't the problem. It was everything before that.

message 361: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Interesting...I also threw this book when I finished it. I felt it was too predictable, too old school Young Adult formula.

Kirstyn I personally liked the book, but every book has people who don't like it so I'm sure you aren't alone, but you have to admit that saying you hate a popular book with a burning passion on a public forum will attract some people who love it as much as you hate it and will argue with you.

message 363: by Beth (new) - rated it 2 stars

Beth I'm another who didn't enjoy this book, I just found that I couldn't connect with Hazel and Gus. I didn't find myself believing their stories and feeling as though they are real people. I can't quite understand why there has ever been so much hype about TFIOS and as to why it has been made into a movie, one which I won't be going to watch. It was my first John Green novel, and I won't be rushing out to pick up another one anytime soon.

Cassandra Okay, it's amazing that you guys created a thread for this. We (the people who hate this book) are a tiny minority.
If John Green was a presidential nominee, then he'd win with his book as vice president. I once read a quote, though, forget who said it...
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the minority, it is time to pause and reflect."
You don't say.

message 365: by Sarah (new) - added it

Sarah I liked it, I mean it had some really pretty moments and the story's nice, but I just found it horridly predictable. I knew who was going to die before I even picked up the book, and not because I was spoiled. It also had a lot of sound bites. Yeah, I'm not saying it was a bad book. It's a good book, and I like the writing style and John Green. I just...yeah. It was reaaally predictable.

Kirstyn Sarah, are you saying it was predictable because you heard sound bites and therefore knew what was going to happen?

Juliana Emma wrote: "Juliana wrote: "Some books, I get angry when people insult."

I agree that no two people read the same book, but it is a pet peeve of mine when people only see the surface problems of a book. However, I did re-read my comment and saw that It was harsher than I intended, and edited it accordingly.

Sarah Kirstyn wrote: "Sarah, are you saying it was predictable because you heard sound bites and therefore knew what was going to happen?"

What I call sound bites are memorable quotes that jump from the page, like "Maybe okay will be our always" for instance. I don't like when a few choice quotes, rather than the whole of the book itself, define the public image of it. I knew what was going to happen because that's just how this type of fiction goes. A work like that, especially with a pov that isn't changing, wasn't going to let Hazel die, and yet with such a precocious topic as cancer, somebody wasn't going to live. It was simple process of elimination to me. Again, I really, really liked the book--maybe I just feel like I've seen it all.

Manasa G. I really liked this book. It is one of my all time favorites but I not going to get mad at you for not liking it. At least you are honestly sharing your opinion and not pretending you liked the book when you really didn't.

Lindseylou Bummer you didn't like the book but we all can have our opinions. For some reason I am getting the feeling that this post is more about you wanting the freedom to express hatred than you actually hating the book though.

Expressing an opposing opinion is not but saying that I'm "wrong" for hating the book, telling me that I need to read the book "between the lines" and threatening me for expressing my hatred is and a lot of people have done that both on this thread and on my review.

Sammy wrote: "But then you question EVERYONE simply stating that they liked this book and refuse to accept anyone else's opinion and you in turn "jump down [the throats]" of those not questioning you but simply sharing an opinion."

Did I say that people who love this book have a bad taste in literature? Did I stop them from expressing their love for it? Did I troll their reviews? Did I? Yet fans are threatening me, trolling my review, getting angry at me and calling me "pitiful" and "sad" for hating the book and you expect me to say nothing?

Sammy wrote: "I'll agree this book is horrible and many people have said the same on this thread but the reason they're not getting as much hate as you (Ayesha and Aly) is because we are not being hypocritical about our opinions."

No, it's simply because me and Aly are defending ourselves and we are active on this thread.

@Aly

I'm sorry that this is happening.

message 380: by Razan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Razan I didn't hate it, but I agree with you it's not worth all that hype.
tbh it's not even original, there are tons of books/movies with the same idea.
and I didn't cry either I was just "oh that's sad" and then I forgot about it but I really think I will love the movie, judging from the trailer, bc I really loved the trailer more than the whole book and it's my first time to say that the movie will be better than the book.

and I read you review, we have the same thoughts, The Book Thief was aloooot better than this and it IS worth all the hype, and when it described how the characters died it really was painful, unlike TFIOS. Augustus' death was soo INFORMATIVE, no emotions at all I have no idea why they cried over it. I didn't even shed a tear.

I have not read your review or the comments that were left by others, but I have read through this entire thread. I didn't see anyone in this thread say that you were wrong for hating the book. I saw some people disagree with something that you said about the book, though. There is a very big and distinct difference between those two things.

Victoria Jones I loved this book. I love it so very much I can quote half of it. But opinions are opinion, I know several people who share your dislike of it. And that's cool. I really don't care if anyone likes it or not. The point is that I like it and that's all that really matters to me, right? And the only opinion that should matter to someone is their own.

Atikah Wahid Hey guys, I'm thinking, is there a list or a group out there that's gonna help me AVOID any books that are John Green-ish. I wanted to check out Rainbow Rowell's book "Eleanor and Park" but somebody just said it will appeal John Green fans only and I was like "OH HELL NAW". So. Is there a list that goes "READ THIS IF YOU ARE A JOHN GREEN FAN". It will save me a lot of money and grief.

I'm sure if you were to write on this thread what type of books you are looking for, rather than the ones you're not a lot of people could give you great recommendations that are in no way relatable to John Green's writing.

message 395: by er3bors (last edited Feb 12, 2014 08:48PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

er3bors It's not so much that this book sucks so bad; it's that the author lets his massive ego get in the way of what could have been a really good book. He couldn't keep his voice out of every character's mouth and just let them be. An Amazon review said it reads like John Green just had this notebook full of witty observations and just had to shove them into every frigging paragraph, and I agree. I can't wrap my brain around the hype over TFIOS being "teh truest and smartest YA cancer book evar" when I can name a few that do it better: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Before I Die, and Miriam's Well are all light years ahead of this story. TFIOS reads like a hipster version of those corny Lurlene McDaniel books from the 90s.
