I didn't even get to finish it and I really dislike not finishing books, but this one I found too annoying. I hated Hazel, her attitude, everything. What I found most irritating is that I had to read about how Augustus had really blue eyes about 5 times(maybe I'm exaggerating a bit here, or not, I can't really remember) in 2 pages. The plot was weak, the characters were annoying. I honestly would have set that book on fire if it weren't borrowed.

I agree. This book was way too hyped up. I didn't like Hazel. Makes the book hard to get through. I agree with a lot of the other opinions too.

Mochaspresso Given the personality that he puts forth in his blog and vlogs, I doubt that John Green would post under an alter ego. His ego seems to be in tact and possibly even a wee bit inflated. If it were him, I think he'd do it on his own website and/or blog and in his own name.

message 1555: by Som (new) - rated it 5 stars

Som People don't always like the books for their literary versatility. At some parts they could relate emotionally or simply just enjoy..
YA degrades your English anyways (junk food lit), so whoever said 'reviewing/writing a thing about it'; please, it's not a Proust book. I'd have had a fraction of respect for you, if you defended your hatred 'this far' towards, let's say 'Rebecca' or 'Jane Eyre'...Showing concerns about literature through TFiOS, isn't a good look..

That being said, still, most of the points some of you pathetically made, my god, it's derogatory to common sense let alone ratiocination..Makes me mad some of you are 20+ (and still a consumer); shit one you hags is almost 30! who thinks any guy who likes this book and posts here is John Green? wtf?

And stop with the tampon throwing; I'm almost buried and red for nothing..sheesh..you fake, imperious dolts. Your absurd monomania seems fabricated, covert attention *****s; quit being butthurt and hostile for every comment that doesn't heil hitler with you in unison...

Aly, go munch another bag of ***ks, may ameliorate your potty mouth (with your next profanity laced reply attempt..)

(Wear that tinfoil back and report yourselves for being astronomically dumb, arrogant..)

Som oooo fast and feisty as always lol.....and where did I say 'dicks' in my prev post? :/

message 1557: by Emily (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emily @Som- it's not our fault that you're butthurt over people not liking your precious book. you don't have to be an asshole to people because they have a different opinion to you. plus, it's pointless to cover up dicks or whores with asterisks because it doesn't change the fact that you're saying it. just because you cover it up doesn't mean you're any less of a hypocrite.

message 1560: by Siobhan (new) - rated it 1 star

Siobhan Thanks for growing the thread, @Som, you look as ridiculous as ever! Do enjoy you calling YA brain rot as you promote the, uh, "quality" of this particular YA book. The hypocrisy is hurting, I'm laughing so hard.

@Aly, ignore the noise. You're awesome and have great taste and shouldn't let little men with inferiority complexes get to you. Those who turn personal never have a constructive argument. Since Som started personal, I'd imagine it's because he has nothing of relevance or consequence to say.

message 1567: by Jen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jen Haha, everyone so sensitive. People have the right to their own opinion and if they didn't like it, so what? No one loves every single book they've read and every single book will have people who did not like it. Don't go around being horrible to people because of their certain opinions on a book.

Gabriela I am sorry but this is my favorite book in the whole wide world. I mean you have to feel very sorry when you find out about Hazel, but then what happened to Augustus. Also, if you didn't cry at the end of the book then that means that you DIDN'T GET IT!!!

message 1569: by Megan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Megan To be honest I had high hopes for this book. It did grab me at some points but in general I was a bit disappointed. I'm not sure if it was Green's writing style or the plot..I will have to read another book written by him to be sure of which it is.
I am most definitely not saying this is the worst book out there. I was disappointed but not overly. It is a nice book to curl up with.

message 1571: by Natalie (new)

Natalie I never knew that there would be people out there who hated TFIOS too! Everyone I know seems to be head over heels for this but I really don't get the hype. I mean at first I thought it was just an okay book, but nothing to make a deal out of, you know? But as the months went on my hatred for TFIOS just grew and now I just can't stand it. I hate everything about it. I hate the stupid, pretentious quotes that are either corny or are supposed to be deep and meaningful but just make no sense. I hate that "okay?" "okay" shit that seems to be EVERYWHERE.I hate the stupid references to the stupid book that Hazel was gaga over and I hate that stupid Van Whatshisface who wrote it. And most of all I hate Hazel and Augustus's relationship. I am so not going to watch the movie.

His writing is awful, the characters are dull, it doesn't portray the hardships of cancer aptly, it's predictable, extremely clichè, and it's not thought provoking in any way or form.
Need any more reasons?

Lauren Carpenter I think everyone is allowed their opinion.
I liked the book, but I don't really get all the hype about it myself.
As much as I liked it when I read it, it's not one of his best books.
It just happens to cover a topic everyone is super sensitive on so they think if someone doesn't like it they're evil. (Which I do not believe at all.)
Sorry to burst bubbles, but it's just a book.
Yes, words can move the soul. But at the end of the day, it's just a book. To be perceived in many different ways. So, love it or hate it, it's no reason to insult people over.

message 1577: by Daniela (new) - rated it 3 stars

Daniela M. I didn't hate it, it was ok to me so. I don't understand why people were making such a big deal out of it, i mean, it's a nice story but that's it. I didn't cry, i was actually expecting that ending, it was kind of obvious to me. Definetly an overrated book.

message 1578: by Matilda (new) - rated it 1 star

Matilda Rose Very over rated. I kinda have to think that some of the hype is people who genuinely enjoyed it (good for you) and the rest just selected morons of the tumblr generation trying to make themselves look all deep and philosophical and meaningful in their tortured souls because if they don't like the book people will call them shallow. People who've never encountered genuine, thought provoking literature that is. Ugh. I hate this stigma that if you don't like a book, particularly one with a) cancer or another form of physical/mental illness or b) an attempt at deep philosophy (Bang and bang, TFIOS) you don't 'get' it. Chances are you're perfectly capable of comprehending the novel, you just don't enjoy it. Or, amazingly, have read much better. I don't know that TFIOS is the worst book I've ever read, I just get annoyed at the amount of hype that goes on about it. Because it certainly is no where near one of the best. Other containing the classic John Green formula including dream pixie girl and pretentious wordy boy, it's full of unrealistic, sometimes convoluted, usually idiotic dialogue sequences, tacky writing, cliches, predictability, and a total misunderstanding of what a metaphor is and how to use one correctly. I actually could not believe how impressively stupid that was. Ugh. However, I will see the film, because hopefully having to have real life people act out the rubbishy parts will smooth it over a little and give it a bit more of a human touch, and most of my problems with John Green are with his writing. I can live with a bit of a boring plot line, so long as I have beautiful writing. So yeah. I didn't like this book when I read it. Listening to everyone else raving about it as if they are just so enlightened after reading it, and it's just so incredible and gut-wrenching and thought provoking started to make me hate it. When, after years of hope, the vampire romance section of the bookstore got replaced by contemporary YA, and I saw that it was every one of John Green's tacky and all the same books right from Looking for Alaska to An Abundance of Katherines, I was mortified. And burning up with passionate hatred, as the title suggests. :P Sorry guys. Like this book if you will. Don't call me an idiot for not loving it. I've read many a better book dealing with similar content matter in a much more sensitive way. And many a book dealing with less sensitive issues and more beautiful writing has induced tears. But let me tell you, if I see a multitude of look-at-my-tortured-soul-through-my-eyes-to-show-you-how-philosophical-i-am teenagers with unlit cigarettes in their mouths walking around, I'm gonna blow up.

If you ever said that to me in person, I'd probably bash you against a wall twice. I'm not hating on you, but wow, holy mother of g was that an angry opinion. I personally feel this way about Paper Towns. One of the worst books I've ever in my life bothered to read. It was so boring, I, like you, got angry and shoved it on my book shelf to collect dust.

TFIOS however was one of the best books I have ever read. I just don't understand how an author can write a magnificent book like this, to writing Paper Towns... haha :p

Emily @Emma, Maja and Elin-

We don't care if you like the book. You liking the book won't change anyone's opinions. Why do you comment about how much you love the book when no one else here gives a shit, I don't know.
This is a forum for people who did not like the book. Please respect that.

Emma- that's so rude and very much considered "hating". Would you find it hateful if I told you that I wanted to shove you into a wall because you liked The Fault in Our Stars? Yes? Alright then. Ólöf I had to force myself to finish this book and same with Looking for Alaska, I don't hate the books but I am not very fond of them. I had high hopes for The Fault in Our Stars and was a bit disappointed, but I had almost no expectations for Looking for Alaska but still it was kind of dull, of course these books are sad, but I feel like they are so slow and simple. They were also saying that the Fault in Our stars was the most amazing love story of the century ... but I can't agree at all, I can think of many books with much better love stories than this one.

We're entitled to our opinions just like you are, but no one told you anything rude, while you were threatening to shove Ayesha into a wall twice.
