For most of the same reasons other people in this thread have pointed out. I'm too lazy to explain it here; you can read my review if you want.

He explains how knowing her merely gave him the idea for the book, but that Hazel is nothing like Esther. He said he was so angry for Esther that she was dying is what inspired him to keep writing this story and that he never wanted her to be a project for him to use to write a cancer kid book.

Molly Aly∞ wrote: "@Molly: Fair enough, but if you look at Esther's blog and look at Hazel, the similarities are outstanding.

Well yeah.. but you just need to read the book to understand what I'm saying I guess. Hazel's story is not Esther's story and Hazel is not Esther.

Veronica Reddick I think he was trying to make a point. I do believe the movie will make a greater impact than the book. Just watching the trailer really got to me.

Aria @Siobhan

This is a really late reply, but I'd love to read it. I'm trying to write YA as well but I'm not much of a good writer. xD

Isabelle deleted her comments, but one of her points was that "you can't hate a book about sick people". That's one of my problems with a few of the fans of TFIOS - if you don't like it, you're a monster because hating TFIOS obviously means you hate people with cancer.

A lot of people on goodreads just post the link to their review.

Taxandria The whole Holland thing just derailed the entire book for me. I felt like I was reading two different books and I could not figure out why so much time and effort was put into that Imperial Affliction author who just ended up not giving Hazel the answers she wanted. It was just plain weird. I actually was much more interested in Hazel and Gus's friend than in them and their lurve.

I feel bad for the writer. There are tons of TFIOS fangirls on Tumblr ready to attack.

message 1290: by Jason (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jason Ayesha, I find it interesting how a fictional story can stir such hatred and negativity toward it, to the point of defensiveness and aggressiveness about your opinion toward fans. At one point you fight against attacks toward you, and yet respond with aggression and insult to others. Your response to others - regardless of what they did or didn't say to you - reflects more on you than it does the book or anything else.

I am curious, rather than simply not liking the book, thinking it was unrealistic or poorly written, over-publicized, etc., how did it stir such hatred in you? For as much as you don't like it, it has somehow touched a nerve in some way. If it didn't, you wouldn't have even mentioned it. Just curious...

I read the book, and enjoyed it, flaws notwithstanding. From my personal experience with people facing such situations, the book very accurately portrayed some of the struggles and inconsistencies a teenage mind and body must navigate when forced into unspeakable circumstances so early in life. But your personal experience with similar people may be entirely opposite. In the end, whether you liked it or not, it certainly made you think, and made you talk about it, which is one of many goals of a book to begin with. So, maybe it had some success with you in its intended purpose.

Take care and good reading!

A L L I E you people obviously don't understand any of this its annoying... everything is a symbol and if you're not deep than you shouldn't read this book if you're not smart enough you won't get it and you'll end up hating the book

A L L I E the book was undeniably flawless and those with a brain can enjoy it the way i did. i have a urge to rant so please answer back to my comments although i know you do not want to reply and you'd rather delete the comment and assume i'm a huge bitch. but in a moment you'll see a long comment explaining what an idiot you are. *flashes bright smile*

A L L I E okay so the fault in our stars is an amazing deep concepted book. reading it changes you. but as i see it you decide to be an asshole about it and take the metaphors literally it pains me to see how you responded to the book. i have my reason to be the way i am right now.

the book is incredibly intelligent and i feel like you should appreciate it more.

from what i've read you didn't understand what john green was saying the magnificent writing tools used by him. metaphors, foreshadowing, and so much more.

the book is funny relatable and sweet since not everyday you see an author writing about someone who's different in a way you cannot change- cancer. and he shows that death will come in different ways but you can cherish the time you have.

hazel is not a whiney character. nor is augustus. hazel look out for others and doesn't want to hurt anyone- meaning the people who love and care about her.

she's very smart for a 16 year old girl. i respect her deeply and find that she had an amazing life.

augustus is a very sweet person and if you can't see that then you'r oblivious.

and when he gave her that trip i find that very sweet since his dying wish was to see hazel happy.

everything i read from your hatred is wrong on so many levels and yea i'm not going to call you a cold hearted bitch but an ignorant dumb asswhole.

good luck in life because you'll probably need it.

A L L I E oh and when you said shit about the breakfast food quotes you don't understand the meaning behind that. its like she was saying anything that has this can become this showing stereotypes. it is simply another metaphor.

A L L I E and the quote about the universe in which you said "um.. what?" proves how dumb you are. that quote wasn't even a metaphor! one of the easiest to get.

and when you said teens of the 21st century DONT speak like that then you haven't realized that thats what makes hazel and augustus so special and amazing. they're smart and have a short life so yea they're going to speak like that.

AND MAY I JUST SAY

"TFioS is nothing but a cheesy romance novel."

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA i thought you were at least a LITTLE smart. but no it got worse.

tfios is the most thoughtful and uncheesy romance novel i've ever seen. and the book is NOT even about the romance. way to go... you just accomplished the spot of most dumb bitch in the world. sorry to break it to you but i think that you're not a very smart reader and you should just stick to something a little more your speed...

dork diares ;) it's a good series for people like you.

A L L I E sorry for the last comment i just couldn't take playing nice and smart anymore its just that your review makes me want to throw a brick at your face.

message 1297: by anilee (last edited May 16, 2014 04:27PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

anilee I didn't hate The Fault in Our Stars when I first read it. I thought it merely okay. A typical John Green novel with his trademark wit and pretension, but unlike Looking for Alaska, this time it didn't work for me.

So why the one star rating?

Because it's wrong, and it's wrong in ways that are to me inexcusable.

Zeno's paradoxes actually defend Parmenides's monism. Furthermore, I have yet to figure out how Cantor's work with infinite cardinalities relates to the Achilles and the Tortoise paradox. There is, I believe, an interpretation that requires an understanding of ordinal numbers to resolve, but cardinality? Not as far as I can tell.

Now, it is possible that Green made the conscious decision to have Van Houten provide incorrect information to further characterize the author as a pompous jackass. I have not rejected that possibility. Regardless, the factual error bothers me because it is not corrected within the novel nor is the true information common knowledge.

Secondly, the sets (0,1) and (0,2) are equinumerous or, mathematically speaking, the same size. For all practical purposes, both have cardinality aleph_1, which is also the cardinality of the reals. That is to say, the entire real number line can be shrunken down to fit within the interval (0,1).

So feel free, Allie, to declare me too unintelligent or too shallow to understand or appreciate this novel. I'll just bask in the glory of my proper grammar and degrees in math and philosophy.

you are obviously not unintelligent but all i'm saying is that i'm 12 and i understand it. every single word is something i can relate to and i quote from it everyday because i am like a healthy - i guess I'm healthy- version of hazel because i really don't understand what to do with my life though i have a deep mind so thats probably why i love the book so much.

you seem very intelligent but seriously most of the haters are dumb.

your view on it is better because you've proved that you are smart and i respect your answer. though i still disagree with everything being said badly about this novel.

A L L I E Aly∞ wrote: "@Allie: My God, you're the most pathetic child I have seen on this thread so far. Fangirls like you just cannot take the hint that some people just don't like it. We all have very valid reasons for..."

by the way i have read dork diaries when i was 10

and this post made me very mad so excuse the fact that i said " asswhole" instead of "asshole" i had lots of responses to this post and i was not thinking of grammar when doing this. i was thinking about the book.
i am also currently in middle school so I'm still being educated. and if you think that tfios is about romance than you don't understand its meaning.

im not going to insult furthermore but show what i mean.
