A The words "great book" and "The Fault in our stars" should NEVER be used together in a sentence

(Lame, I know...)

Raynebow When did this turn into a world where we judge others as stupid, just because they like or do not like something that we do or don't. That's sad to me, that you all are fighting over A BOOK. Your letting paper with words on it, A STORY; make you argue with strangers on the internet. Whats really stupid is how you all are acting over this, you must not be very mature to attack people just because they liked the book, or because they didn't.

message 1158: by Von (new) - rated it 5 stars

Von Bariuad Yeah. Actually, I do not hate it with burning passion. It is just disappointing to think that everybody else is gushing about this book and when you started reading it, you'll be asking WHY. Are they just over acting or you simply just didn't understand the book.

Raynebow aly said What are you talking about? No one's arguing, haha. We're discussing the book's faults in lengthy detail. If you're referring to earlier posts', it's because immature people started insulting us first, and we didn't even retaliate. So please, if you're here to preach the injustice of us hating a book (which we have every right to) that aren't up to standard, don't. No one's arguing or insulting each other. Thanks.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. But some people WERE insulting by implying people who liked the book were stupid. If you were not arguing, then my post doesn't apply to you. And I realize you have the right to hate the book, that's what I was trying to say, NO ONE should argue saying you don't have that right. Or say something negative about you just because you hate a book they like. I wasn't trying to accuse you, I was just upset to see people insulting others over something silly like a book. There was arguing and insults flying everywhere, I am fine with discussion but I hate to see someone being called dumb over what they like (or don't)
Thanks

A I completed Me and Earl and the dying girl yesterday and THAT was an amazing book.

Raynebow @ Ayesha
Really? Is that one about cancer too?

message 1166: by Trace (last edited May 01, 2014 04:42PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Trace Pasquelle Oh, Ally. Teens don't do silly things? Dress silly ways? Come up with silly philosophies? Silly or not, it's realistic among the silly, and I'm glad you got it. But you keep using that "I" word yet again. That's wonderful that "I" wouldn't do as August did with the cig. It's not so wonderful that "I" only accepts an "I"-limiting view of fiction what "I" would do in reality.

A Raynebow wrote: "@ Ayesha

It is but it does not focus heavily on cancer. Unlike TFIOS I found it to be an honest and solid book based on cancer and the author does not try to emotionally manipulate readers. Not to mention that Me and Earl and the dying girl is hilarious.

Saveetra Revathi i loved every single page..
one of the first books that made me cry

A R.I.P thread :'( :'( :'(

Shadowhunter Clary There actually were parts I really didn't like especially after discussing this with other people. In my opinion the supposedly "beautiful" metaphor with the cigarette seems like a way for Augustus to be an ass or a jerk about the fact Hazel has lung cancer I found it a bit sick really I don't see why people call it beautiful. I also found the parts about the book Hazel loved a bit tedious to read I thought it ruined to book.

Nadosia Grey I didn't hate it; actually I quite liked it. You should have just gotten a library copy before buying it.

Nadosia Grey Aly∞ wrote: "@GreyJect: Please read all comments before posting. some of us don't have libraries near us."

So not having a library near you justifies buying a book purely based on ratings? There's many ways to get access to books other than libraries. Even if one did have to buy it, it doesn't make sense to get a hard-cover which costs more than a paperback.

There was no paperback copy available in the bookstore and I was eager to read the book so I picked the hardcover at the first opportunity.

Nadosia Grey Aly∞ wrote: "@GreyJect: I bought the Kindle version. And yes, buying a book because you don't have a library does make sense actually. It sounded good, so why not? Hahaha."

I was referring to the originator of this thread. I'm glad your method proved such results.

message 1175: by Aria (new) - rated it 1 star

Aria I read the book again to see if my opinion over it had changed.

Nope.

I found myself rolling my eyes within the first few pages and putting the book away after only 2 minutes of re-reading it.

message 1176: by no one (new) - rated it 5 stars

no one it upsets me that people are celebrating their common hate over a cancer novel

message 1177: by no one (new) - rated it 5 stars

no one i guess you could say you have a right to, but yeah some people literally are celebrating, maybe not you. I agree that this book is completely ridiculous at times and John Green had to go out on a couple limbs to get this point across, but once he did and once you understood that point, I feel like this book changes you. How did you interpret the book? just wondering

Ritsel woa, finally someone that understands. I read it, and i can say it's not worth it. Like, it's pretty stupid. I don't even talk about it i just say i don't like it because is like that. i don't understand all this passion with john green. i dont.

message 1182: by Siobhan (new) - rated it 1 star

Siobhan Mo :D wrote: "it upsets me that people are celebrating their common hate over a cancer novel"

So cancer being a theme means we have to like it? That's emotional manipulation. No.

message 1183: by Von (new) - rated it 5 stars

Von Bariuad I'd love to try some of John Green's works. They said Looking for Alaska is waaaaay better than TFIOS. Any thoughts about this book? I wanna give Green a second chance. Maybe I just didn't embrace the idea of the cancer thing and her stupid deathwish.

message 1184: by Sara (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sara @Vons I thought Looking for Alaska was better than TFIOS (not much better but better). It's more realistic in my opinion.

message 1185: by A (new) - rated it 1 star

A Everytime I hear the word 'metaphor', I cringe in disgust thanks to TFIOS.

message 1186: by Von (new) - rated it 5 stars

Von Bariuad Meh. I am not so sure if I'll be reading it anymore.

message 1187: by Von (new) - rated it 5 stars

Von Bariuad “It’s a metaphor,” says Christina. She frowns. “Right?”
“A metaphor, or simply a figure of speech?” he says, also frowning. “Or is a metaphor a definite category beneath the heading of ‘figure of speech’?”

Lol. It's a curse, I think. Whenever I hear or read the word metaphor, I immediately think about TFIOS. Metaphor -_-

message 1189: by Emily (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emily I didn't hate the book but I certainly don't understand my it received such high marks. For being a book revolving around an extremely painful subject it was remarkably void of emotion.

message 1190: by Ashley (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ashley I wow... I've never heard anyone say they hated This book. I totally respect your opinion although I did read your review and didn't really agree on any of the points you mentioned but you're right you have the right to your opinion and I respect that. I personally loved the book. It was a really heart warming story for me and after I read it I was So glad I had. But it's okay to have other views, Im sure others feel the same way you do, but Im not one of them (: x

message 1191: by Aria (new) - rated it 1 star

Aria I wanted to give Green's writing a second chance so I read An Abundance of Katherines. That didn't do it for me either. Guess I'm just not a fan.

Mochaspresso Aly∞ wrote: "@GreyJect: I bought the Kindle version. And yes, buying a book because you don't have a library does make sense actually. It sounded good, so why not? Hahaha."

I used to sample books in the bookstore all the time before I actually buy them. The design of my nearest bookstore (Barnes and Noble) encourages it with couches and armchairs all over the place. They also allow you to return books if you keep the receipt and follow the return guidelines.

Someone very early in the thread was correct when they mentioned that kindle allows you to download a sample for free. The sample for TFIOS was the first couple of chapters. Amazon also allows you to get refunds of kindle versions if it is done within the proper timeframe. These days, there really is no reason to pay for a book that you ultimately were dissatisfied with..

I understand. Not having access to a decent library or a good bookstore probably stinks. I would hate that. I just noticed that you mentioned buying the kindle version. I wasn't sure if you were aware that you can actually get refunds for kindle versions as long as you do it within 7 days.

*sigh* lets do this thing.
Its unto a individual reader, wether or not they FEEL the emotion in a book. Even the best of whats considered Masterminds in literature can fail to evoke a potent emotion in some. But that aside, you can not deny facts.
The fact is that Hazel and Augustus were definitely not perfect.
They behaved in a completely typical manner a Teen would,
"They become terrified, confused, depressed and angry"
Granted Hazel is disrespectful and does back answer her mom, she is not "Extra" harsh. She does understand that her parents have sacrificed a lot for her, and she does love them. But yes, she does sometimes lash out in a way a Angry and depressed person would. But i defiantly do not think she's "Extra" ungrateful etc etc.
Back to the point.
Dark Humour and Sarcasm is just a manifestation of Anger and cynicism, which in Hazel's place is very understandable. Does it make her a unreal character because she has a wicked sense of humour? -_-
She deflects the reality of her situation by focusing on the most technical and mundane aspects to it.
Considering she's a cancer survivor, and some point in her life, she has faced death in the face, Fear and confusion and helplessness must have clutched onto her. So it that unbelievable that she has spend days and months in surgery and Hospitals and fitful days in bed, contemplating the reason for human existence? Heck we all have asked our moms and dads various forms of the very question at least a dozen times when we were kids.
Oh and about what you said, Its not like they only ever have philosophical debates, they have tons of normal dorky conversations.
Also Obviously that little monologue is not something she spontaneously fragmented, she has spent time thinking about it before. So Hazel and Augustus are eloquent in expressing their thoughts, thats just impossible! Teens must use "Like" in-between every other word and swear in SMS language just as much? Nah ah.
Hazel is a bit of a recluse and Augustus is a happy-go-lucky dork who hides his pain behind a grin.
These are 2 individuals we're talking about, don't box them up into your stereotypical expectations.
Yes I do agree they do tend to think on a similar wavelength. And they have their dorky tendencies in common. But where Hazels awkward, Gus is supposingly "Smooth" :p He can occasionally be pretentious and he accepts that.
Yes this book is exceptionally quotable, and the brilliance and fluency in the words do tend to exceed expectations, Its what it is.
It can be arrogant and pretentious to the some readers, but others would see beyond that first impression and see the truth in those statements. Not just that they sound "cool" but its something one can relate to.
So thats just a counterargument from a fan.

My favourite author, Markus Zusak is also a good friend of John Green. Zusak loved TFIOS and his praise is printed on the back of my hardcover's book jacket :(
