That's on my to-read shelf! Is it good?

Raynebow Lets not argue, after all its just a book. The way some of you are arguing you'd think we are discussing politics, ITS A BOOK, and everyone has a different opinion what are you going to do about that?.

My opinion Its over hyped, and I liked it, I thought it was well written, but I think everyone made a big deal about and might have gone overboard in that. If you hated it, I understand Im not going to judge you or argue with you because you don't like a book that I do

Is it good? I have never, I repeat never, felt so many emotions all at once. Drums, Girls and Dangerous pie is one of the books that is sadly looked over. You should definitely read it! (and thank me later, aha)

message 908: by Joyce (new) - rated it 4 stars

Joyce G I have to say that I actually liked this book. Liked, but not loved. Not because that John Green is not that good of an author, but if you compare this book with his other books, you can say that this book is the worst book that he has ever written. And it's actually still quite good.

Abigail Oh gosh. Agree.

Firstly, put aside the fact that the book is unrealistic in its portrayal of the super wordly cancer-teens in this book.

Then we can think about the actual writing:
It was good, but not memorable.

I think the massive (undeserving) hype for this book comes from the fact that this book is about teenagers with cancer, coming out with some very quotable thoughts. THUS, teenagers (in good health or otherwise) are going to read this book, and love it because it speaks to them, and think it is the most amazing thing.
But it's not. This phenomenon might as well be called the 'Twilight Complex' or the 'Harry Potter Effect'; mediocre books are lifted to a heady height of glory due to a huge influx of the 'youth of today' latching on, and using the internet to shift the baseline.

Just so this doesn't come across as a middle-aged rant about the 'kids these days', I'd like to inform you that I am 21.

And (I haven't checked) I assume that Van Houten and John Green have a lot in common? Is this book a method of dealing with something in his life?

message 910: by [deleted user] (new)

^This. Except I'm a teenager and hated it.

message 911: by Lauren (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lauren Carpenter I agree that it's over-hyped, that some of the plot is underdeveloped and that some of the plot points were far fetched. However, I liked the book when I read it. It's not one of my favourites, nor will I ever read it again.
But I found it did teach me a few things, like any book will, even if it's simply "what not to do".

Actually, my name keeps popping up here. No, i'm not reposting the same comment. But alot more people think it was a great book. Ha. You people complain like it wasn't.

Tatyana Nimotalai wrote: "Tatyana wrote: "yes, your the only one."

I did. your complains about the book were stupid and irrevalant.

chantelle Charlotte-
I can see where you're coming from when you say that the book romanticized cancer, but I would definitely have to disagree with you. Sure, the movie has a pretty silly tag line, but at the same time- books and movies aren't always the same. The ideas from a book don't always translate into the movie and I'm sure you've seen enough terrible book to movie adaptations to understand this.
I mean, when Augustus' cancer was really bad, we have scenes where he's pissing the bed and where Hazel has to drive to his car to get him and he's covered in puke and his tube is out and honestly there is no romance in these scenes. And I think these are really honest scenes as well. Just my thoughts

chantelle That's true. The book did have a tendency to romanticize dying. I can agree with that!

Your reasons for the book being amazing are stupid and dumb, and maybe you don't know how to count above the number one, because if you were able to, you would know there is definitely more than one person who doesn't like this book.

Johanna Bernice i also hated this book, i expected more that's why, the "romantic" feel wasn't even there. i did not even sympathize any of the characters. their so called love is very common in concept and not even heartwarming at all.

Except that it really didn't. No one has chemo or radiotherapy, no one talks of immune problems as a result of their cancer - Hazel shared her nose tube with a young girl who, I guarantee, would be covered in germs and make Hazel so fricking sick - and everyone keeps their hair. He dramatised the whole thing, without making much realistic. So how can you see the "dirty" side of cancer when it's not even there?

I am doubting between ''A thousand splendid suns'' ''And the mountains echoed'' and between this book. I am 15 years old and I don't know if Hosseini fits my age. Can anyone give me some advice?

S. Garland No- I also didn't really enjoy it as much as everyone else seemed too. It was not for me. The book had moments, but those moments weren't threaded together very well. I imagine it will work well on the big screen though, because all movies need is moments. Some books are better as movies.

Jessica Grutzmacher I agree. We read it for book club. My description of this book was Dawson's Creek if Joey had cancer. The dialogue was unbelievably unrealistic. I had heard that when children are diagnosed with caner they are often kind of "stuck" at the maturity level of when they were diagnosed. These kids were way too witty and wise to be believable to me. I also found the book really slow.

By reading the thread in it's entirety and countless one and two star reviews, you may get a good notion of the problems in this book. I'm interested in why you believe it's good. Peer pressure notwithstanding.

Zanib Until I meet a guy my age who knows what a Soliloquy is, like Gus, I disown my copy of this book. I mean, how unrealistic is it that two cancer kids, one gorgeous, both totally witty, sophisticated and academic meet and spew 'metaphors' into the air like they are the best things to walk the earth?

I wish life could be like that, where people are ready with sophisticated sentences for conversation. It is not.

The whole problem with the book is that it's trying so hard to feed us philosophical ideas.

I mean, take this analogy: The more a parent tries to push baby food in their child's mouth, the more he or she will resist.

The book was trying too hard, and it was obvious, which led me to believe it pretentious.
