Thank you Mamie, for answering my question and I did also get a chance to listen to the video of your radio interview at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/clgammon... . It seems one of the callers had a similar question to mine and you elaborated on the interview a bit further about your life with your mother as an adult. It is very admirable that you took care of her when she was an elder, even though she had been your abuser. Great interview, Mamie, and it seems that you have been asked back next Saturday for a second interview!

Ali wrote: "What inspired you to take this journey that you are on with this book? Was it a healing experience?"Hello Ali. I see you have ask a two part question and I will do my best to answer each of them.
Your first question you ask me what inspired me to take this journey that I am on with this book.
Abuse is a lonely place where depression breeds. Without hope or love or anyone to identify with it's easy to believe you are out there with no where to turn. That in itself is the" WHAT" in- inspired me-make sense?
Some say it doesn't but for me Ali, I feel that if I had had anyone that I knew that was abused or anyone I could share my abuse with I may have made it out in a better way or in a shorter time than six decades.
This path is lonely and the only solution to my complete recovery is to share my journey in hopes someone else won't feel the sting of this journey alone. I want to be here for that person if just to listen. So, each day my journey with my book on a physical part, is to market my book everywhere and hope that my life touches someone that needs me. Someone that needs to know what they are feeling is normal or someone that wants to stay strong by pulling from my attitude and motto to NEVER GIVE UP.
You second question ask me if it was a healing experience and that answer is YES! Being able to the first time in my life look straight into the eyes of the demons that stayed in my heart and mind and deal with the fallout from years of abuse set me free.
This was again a lonely journey as no one can do it for you but this time I had the love of family and friends beside me if I needed a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen.
Today I feel healed because of my support system that grew other than my family and friends that came from my book. There are many lives that have been destroyed from abuse and this destruction can be a forever event in ones life so healing is a must to become whole which is what has happened for me on this journey.
I did not want to just say "Yes" as I felt you may be looking for more and do hope you got the answer you wanted.
If you know anyone in this place of abuse or turmoil, please tell them to get help-take their hand and help them find their way. It sounds like you are that type of friend.
Thank you for your questions.

Good Morning Michael.I keep receiving a notice you have ask a new question but fail to see it here that I have not answered. Please do let me know if you have another question I may reply to.
It is not my intentions to ignore anyone.
Have a wonderful day everyone. We are on the home stretch before February's new book is here for discussion so if there are nay questions out there I may answer, now is the time.
I, of course will always be available to answer long after the discussion ends at:
http://www.Reflections-of-Mamie.com
Thank You,
Mamie
This has been such an informative discussion Mamie! As much as has been revealed about your mindset growing up, there is still much mystique surrounding the mindset of your Mother, your abuser, and what made her tick. My question would be: Why you and Herb but not your younger brother? What divided her into two distnct personalities - loving one child but rejecting the others? Have you ever read or heard of this happening before? I know - that is more than one question but all related.
Linda wrote: "This has been such an informative discussion Mamie! As much as has been revealed about your mindset growing up, there is still much mystique surrounding the mindset of your Mother, your abuser, an..."Thank you Linda for another great question.
This is one I have to admit I will likely not be able to answer completely. I am not a professional in counseling or psychology but we had a visitor here before-Martha Love that is a professional. If she is still following this discussion perhaps she will take this one.
I have said before that my mother was raised by parents from the old country and she use to tell me that having a daughter meant nothing but to have a son was what defined her. Though, that does not explain why she was so hateful and abusive to my older brother.
My mother was a reader and said she found advise from books in 1946 on being a parent. I know some were written by those that had no children -even famous authors and wondered how they could possibly speak from any experience.
I have tried since my book was published to find answers for questions like this but haven’t found any that makes sense to me.
Recently I read an article about the teachings of the Pearls whom are two married authors giving advise on beating your children into submissive and decent behaved beings which have resulted in deaths around the world. I have not checked the validity of such a book but if Martha Love could address what she believes is behind advise of such people , maybe the answer to your question will make sense to us both on the outside chance that was my mothers excuse.
I hope my answer and yours is that simple-mother reading a book written by wannabe experts.
I hope this is not a dance about reply Linda but it is the best I can do.
We are on the home stretch for replies so if you have any other questions, please return and I hope to do better.
Many Thanks,
Mamie

Mamie, I am still here following this very intriguing discussion. Without her own input, it would be mere conjecture to say why your mother selected to abuse one child and not another. Often, the abused child is of a particular gender, but in this case she abused one son and not the other. Favoritism is not unusual in abuse. Also a variety of things can trigger the emotions driving the abuse. It is always possible that the personality difference or even physical characteristics of your two brothers triggered a different response in her from her own past experiences.
Thanks Martha and Rosemary! Perhaps it is impossible to know the true answer but I think that the 'triggers' could be somewhat revealing. The important thing is that you took sufficient positives from your life and turned them into a life well lived. That speaks volumes for the strength and versatility of the human spirit.
Linda wrote: "Thanks Martha and Rosemary! Perhaps it is impossible to know the true answer but I think that the 'triggers' could be somewhat revealing. The important thing is that you took sufficient positives ..."Thank you both Martha and Linda for the comments. I have tried to apply what I went through to my life as an adult and made many mistakes while finding "myself" and many I regret but when love is missing, you simply do not know how to give what you never knew.

Rosemary, I just listened to your interview on Talk Radio this morning and it was excellent. You had so many callers asking some very deep and thoughtful questions on your abuse experience. And I was very elated to find that Dream Catchers serves children nationally.
Martha, thank you for that comment.Dreamcatchers for Abused Children is a great organization and helps so many. Because of the work they do, I donate money from the sales of my book to them as one of my two charities I wanted to support.
I will let you know tomorrow if I spoke out of turn but do know someone from Washington State and New York that said they had received help.

HELLO EVERYONE and THANK YOU.My time ends soon for discussing my book titled “REFLECTIONS OF MAMIE: A STORY OF SURVIVAL” But before I am unable to post again, I would like to say THANK YOU to KIRSTIN FOR HOSTING THIS FORUM.
I also would like to say THANK YOU TO:
LINDA HALES who edited my book and I highly recommend you contact her for editing or to read her children's books to your family. “SUNSHINE AND HER BIG BLARNEY SMILE” is newly released and can be found at: www.linnieslittlebooks.com/ Her support has been tremendous. PLEASE connect with your children. Abuse is something you cannot undo and LOVE is so much more than a four letter word. Reading to your children will help you form a bond and understanding together.
Also a huge THANK YOU to MARTHA CHAR LOVE, a Psychologist and Author of “WHAT’S BEHIND YOUR BELLY BUTTON” which is a read I strongly recommend. Help yourself understand those “gut instincts” which is your second brain. I have talked to so many from here that have shared privately that if they had understood what the feeling was that made them confused before they lashed out it would have been different.-So try to understand these feelings. This book has helped me understand so much of my buried feelings and those that until recently gnawed at me. Find her here on Goodreads and Amazon.com
I also want to THANK my BROTHERS HERB AND J. WATSON, HUSBAND DOUGLAS AND DAUGHTER KECIA. They are all part of my book and finishing it would not have been possible without them.
LASTLY, THANK YOU ALL for the support and your questions here and/or privately. GOODREADS is the greatest foundation for a connection between friends, authors and readers.
They deserve credit for so much and helping thousands of people come together.

Many thanks Mamie. it has been my pleasure to work alongside of you to get your message out there. If your life story can help others who have and or are suffering through any kind of abuse, then your non-stop persistence has been well worth it. You definitely practice what you preach in supporting abused children (even adults) and animals. Your new little adopted puppy, Maggie, has found her forever home with you and Doug and will fill your home with love and playfulness and become your new lease on life for sure. I'm so happy that you've had this invaluable forum in which to share your story.
I also would like to thank you, Rosemary, for opening yourself up and sharing your experiences. I have learned quite a bit from you that counselors appreciate so much because you have the fortitude to work through your memories until you feel the light on the other side. You are one of the bravest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and I hope everyone interested in understanding child abuse will read your inspiring and well-written book.
Linda wrote: "Many thanks Mamie. it has been my pleasure to work alongside of you to get your message out there. If your life story can help others who have and or are suffering through any kind of abuse, then..."Many thanks Linda for the supportive words today and all along the road as I recalled the painful memories that rocked my soul and writing it so difficult.
We encounter many people in life life that lend a hand and if you are not ready to walk that path, you don't always know what a treasure of friends you really have from not knowing how to trust.
Goodreads offers so many ways to communicate with one another and share the great parts of our stories. The forum here lead by Kirsten was an honor. Being nominated by so many that read my book and winning this Book of the Months contest made my heart glad it had walked the path of memories so I could help others.
Thank You Again,
Mamie
Martha wrote: "I also would like to thank you, Rosemary, for opening yourself up and sharing your experiences. I have learned quite a bit from you that counselors appreciate so much because you have the fortitude..."Martha thank you too for the privilege of getting to know you through my book. Your confidence and sharing my book with your fellow colleagues, has lifted my spirits to know that writing my journey has been worth every mile I had to travel in order to find my way.
Hope was not something I ever had much of but with my continued dreams and this book release, I was able to see that life can be just as "normal" for me as anyone else. My message was, is and always will be to "NEVER GIVE UP" as to do so - Well, there is nowhere else to go.
I know that my book has helped others feel a connection and feel they are not alone making it perhaps just a little easier for them to hope for themselves and dream about their own futures.
Thank you again for the tremendous support,
Mamie
I realize many have ask for more recent facts but these are the most up to date available to me and shocking enough.NOW, AGAIN SOME INTERESTING FACTS JUST FOR YOU AND SUPPLIED BY DREAMCATCHERS FOR ABUSED CHILDREN:

*There were 2.9 million child abuse reports made in 1992
*ONLY 28% of the children identified as harmed by abuse are investigated
*85% of the 1.2 - 1.5 million runaways are fleeing abuse at home
*Today 6 children will commit suicide

*Untreated child abuse increases the likelihood of arrest for a violent crime by 38 percent
*60 MILLION survivors are former victims of child sexual abuse in America today
*38% of women & 20% of men have been sexually abused during adolescence
*It is estimated that 3%-6% of the clergy population has abused a child

Imagine the outcry if these statistics represented a disease, which was wiping out 5 children per day, victimizing millions, and who's by-products where disabilities and expanding violence. Youth rights are really

THANK YOU GOODREADS and Kirsten for having this forum to explain my book and share the charities many could help. My book is about child abuse, dreams and hopes sharing a bright future and now happy life. Getting involved with charities that need you is a great way to begin your own healing-at least it was for me.We have not really spoken to you about Animal Cruelty but this is one of the two charities that my book sales donate to-we must stop animal abuse as well. It was said to me that many animals abuser as children often turn to child and adult abuse later in life so maybe this information can help turn that around.
Here are some interesting facts for you provided by the Kitsap Humane Society for Abused and abandoned animals.
Please visit the web site and/or the one nearest you and see how you can help.

CRUELTY CASES
Where do I report animal cruelty?
In Kitsap County: Report to the Kitsap Animal Rescue department, call 911
Outside Kitsap County: You will need to find out the name of the persons in your area who are responsible for investigating anti-cruelty codes in your town, county and/or state. These people typically work for your local human organization, animal control agency, taxpayer-funded animal shelter or police precinct.
To find out what agencies are authorized to investigate and arrest instances of animal cruelty in your area (i.e, does the enforcement of animal cruelty laws fall under the authority of the police department or animal control officers?), visit the ASPCA's Report Animal Cruelty FAQ page.
Tips for Reporting Animal Cruelty:
Once you have found out which law enforcement agent you should speak to, it’s important to provide him or her with a consise, written, factual statement of what you observed, giving dates and approximate times whenever posible. If at all feasible, try to photograph the abusive situation and date your pictures. It would also be helpful to get short, factual written statements from other witnesses.
When you call to report animal cruelty, always make sure to keep a careful record of exactly whom you contact, the date of the contacts and the content and outcome of your discussion. Never give away a document without making a copy for your file! Make it clear to the agent that you are very interested in pursuing the case, and that you are willing to lend whatever assistance you can.
Follow up if Necessary - If you don’t receive a response from the officer assigned to your case within a reasonable length of time, don’t be afraid to present your information to his or her supervisor and, if necessary, to local government officials, such as the county commissioner, and ask them to act.
Here are more ideas for how you can help here or at any Humane Society. Get your young children involved-just check the age requirements. Another way to bond with your children especially if they are teens while helping the helpless.

Good Evening!I have been ask to post a few reviews here for several interested Goodreads members so I have selected a couple from my book. They follow in the next two comment boxes.
I will begin with the one written by Martha Char Love whom has been here with her questions:
“Reflections of Mamie: A Story of Survival is an excellent five star memoir that is written in a highly engaging narrative form and I feel so fortunate that I had a chance to read it. It is a brave account of Mamie’s experience of living through horrendous physical and emotional abuse as a child and young adult in the 50s and 60s. It is a story written to open the door of communication and provide an invitation, even a calling, to other victims of abuse to also share their story. Mamie writes about the difficulties she experiences in dredging up these frightening memories of abuse, but she also shares the need and relief she feels sharing her story rather than leaving the impact of the abuse buried deep within the interior of her psyche to haunt her and cause her further harmful stress.
One gets the idea from reading her story that if she can move out of abuse toward creating a positive environment with loving relationships in her adult life, that others can do the same. I love the way she addresses the reader throughout her sharing and brings you into her close confidence. It is this warm closeness with her readers in which she instills confidence and empowerment in anyone who has experienced abuse to be strong and work toward a better life through sharing with others whom they can trust.
I highly recommend this memoir for anyone who has experienced abuse as well as to anyone who needs to understand what people abused as chil- dren go through. This book says what many others will not say, reveals the abuse experience as it is lived, and leaves you with the clear understanding what you need in order to be sensitive and knowledgeable on this issue with anyone you might know who has been abused. I plan to recommend it in my coaching as an empowering example of a person who has found her strength in life despite the many hardships she endured and who un- derstands the power of sharing one’s life feelings with others who care and how that can lead to a transformation toward happiness.
Martha Love, Author of What’s Behind Your Belly Button? A Psychological Perspective of the Intelligence of Human Nature and Gut Instinct
Good Evening Again! As I have said, I been ask to post a few reviews here for several interested Goodreads members so I have selected a couple from my book. They follow below.
It is said “where there is no vision the people perish.” Rosemary “Mamie” Adkins has rightly said she is a ‘dreamer’ and her dreams and visions reveal how much hope can come from what may seem to be the most hopeless of situations. In her book Reflections of Mamie she details the horror of being raised in a home without love as she speaks of the abuse that she experienced. Sadly, there is no doubt that her story has been seen in other families, and I would recommend this book to those who are seeking to know the answers from those trials of life.
Rosemary speaks quite frankly about how she felt within herself as a young child seeking to cope with both the emotional and physical scars of life that no one should have to endure at such a young age. She also details the way she discovered help from her ‘special friends’ who were there when she needed them. Today, as an adult, Rosemary “Mamie” Adkins blossoms as she pursues her goals in life by keeping her dreams and visions alive.

Continuing with three more reviews:MOTHER IS EVERYTHING
I have read Reflections of Mamie thoroughly through once and in some sections I reflected on the Mamie’s paradox several times.
The author’s paradox is that she never gave up, she never gave up loving her mother. A tearjerking story right to her mother’s only salty tear at the end of her life. Despite all the physical abuse she took at the hands of her narcissistic sick mother, notwithstanding constant chicanery, deceit, sadism, and through wickedness, love for her mother endured.
This is a valuable enlightening journal that every girl, young women, and mothers must read. Unvarnished and truthfully reveled tribulations, told with just the right touches of welcome humor.
This was not an easy book for me to experience and review. It forced me to relive moments of frustration and ways to finally escape from my inflicted family mental prison. Yes, I took this book personally.
Some small details puzzled me, the author includes family snapshots and formal portrait photographs of herself at a younger age. They look professional, and maybe were retouched. The show a girl with an unworried countenance, exuding quite confidence. This was a visual variance witch belied her accompanying narrative.
Overall, I rejoiced in the happy endings that Mamie is enjoying in her successful life. A stalwart husband, an adorable loving daughter and living the life of a successful, vital author.
John Brooke, Author or Mother Lode
————————————————
A Triumph for Mamie!
“Reflections of Mamie” is the story of a young girl who spends her entire life searching . . . no, pleading for her mother’s love and approval, but instead receives only physical, mental, and emotional abuse in return. Yes, Mamie’s mother, a woman of high standards, and an even higher opinion of herself, engages her twisted mind and self-justifying ways to make little Mamie’s life a living hell.
However, Mamie is not about to be so easily broken and finds escape in the serenity and solitude of the beach and the call of the moving surf. And when such excursions are not available, she finds comfort in imaginary friends, who support her through the most unbearable times. And, of course, there is a blocking out mechanism that shelters Mamie enough to temporarily deliver her into a void of internal safety.
Nevertheless, this unsettling tale is more a story of hope as Mamie’s fighting spirit leaves the reader in awe at the young girl who comes to life on the tear-stained pages. True, it was a painstaking, difficult endeavor for the author to write such a revealing and personal story, but Rosemary Adkin’s intention is to try to help any other unfortunate soul whose childhood lacked the common and inherent love of a caring and decent mother. It is more than commendable that our Mamie seeks the higher ground of her childhood dilemma by proving to others that they still have a chance for love and happiness in a sometimes callous and uncertain world.
Indeed, it is perplexing that a mother could maltreat such a needy and devoted child as Mamie. But, then again, certainly a dark heart is difficult to illuminate . . . even by the wonderful radiance of one’s own little girl. For shame!

The request have been numerous for posting these reviews here. Tomorrow I have two more for you with an excerpt. PLEASE do see my Goodreads page for more reviews.
These overwhelming requests have made my heart smile that Mamie has touched your lives. Goodreads has been so good to me and they are the best in leadership for joining authors and readers. We all owe them our gratitude with a special thanks to KIRSTEN, our group leader for BOTM.
Thank You.
My last review posted tonight as we say good night and wish the next BOTM winner all the best. This book is a must read whether from a general interest point of view or from the perspective of an abused personality. Every emotion from despair to hope is aptly expressed in this tell all memoirs and you may even be surprised at the amount of humor Mamie managad to sprinkle between the lines! Mamie talks to her reader, inviting her inside her life to get the inside track into the psyche of the abused child.

Animals are among life’s most precious gifts and are deserving of the same love and care that we give our children. I can’t begin to count the ways that our pets have enriched our lives and those of the sick and elderly. Thanks to all volunteers who work tirelessly to save injured, lost, abandoned and abused animals. Because I am a strong supporter of animal rescue teams, I have elected to share my donations between child and animal abuse charities.
THANK YOU,
Mamie
Hello and Good Evening for the last time. Following is an excerpt taken from a few pages but in phrases not necessarily connected but all in the last chapter to show you there is hope and life turned out right for me. I kept believing that saying of mine “NEVER GIVE UP” and I made it to where life is as it should be,-grand and now peacefully happy.EXCERT FROM
REFLECTIONS OF MAMIE: A STORY OF SURVIVAL
By: Rosemary “Mamie” Adkins
“Yes, this is me, doing what I have always done best...dream, plan and create life’s most wonderful memories but this time, the word ‘escape’ will take on an entirely new meaning. Oh yes, this time I’ll plan the grand-daddy of them all...an escape to a romantic location to celebrate our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Let’s see now...I can’t think of a better place to make our dream come true than to our magical fantasy land, the Emerald Isle.”
“Now we’ll take a peak back in time to visualize the grandeur of the ladies of that period in long flowing gowns and the gentleman soldiers dressed in their finest. I can almost step into the role as Julia Roberts did in the movie, Pretty Woman when she was rescued by her knight in shining armor, played by Richard Gere...except that my knight is played by none other than my dashing husband, Doug. My gown would be made of pure white silk with a white overlay finished with hand crocheted roses and a trail that barely kisses the ballroom floor. Sir Douglas places his hand on my waist and with my hand gently on his shoulder, he would sweep me across the gleaming tiled ballroom floor in rhythm to the orchestra playing in the background.”
“We are joined by all ten of our friends, in front of whom Doug and I will share our vows of recommitment to one another over a sparkling glass of wine. How could love possibly get better than this?”
“As you know, I’ve been a dreamer my entire life, forever contemplating the ‘what ifs’ and wondering where my life’s journey will lead me and now those dreams have all come true. Ireland, you’ll forever be in my heart alongside my darling husband, who is my soul mate for life.”
“Now, didn’t I tell you that -----I was a dreamer?"
THANK YOU again and Please stop by my web site anytime to say Hello,

Thank you, Rosemary, for the deep discussions on your child abuse experiences and for all the excellent references. I want to encourage everyone to view your two videos on child abuse:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5DFx...

Many thanks Rosemary for your outpouring of affection and sharing to all who reached out to understand your story. It has been a wonderful month of discussion, thanks to Kirstin and Modern Goodreads group.
Thank you both again for everything you both added to this discussion.Without this forum and Kirsten none of this would have been possible. Freedom of speech has made our world such a great place to be especially here on Goodreads.
I hope this stay available in an archive so people will still be able to reach out and ask me whatever is on their minds.
Happy Reading,
Mamie

Martha thank you for adding my two videos. What a great close to my discussion for them to tell the story of child abuse. My photo as a child and adult are used through nth videos and still hurts today to watch my own story but with any luck, it will make a difference to all those that need help or want to understand the life of those abused.
I do hope my book continues to help those you know and they too heal.

It has been a wonderful month of discussion, thanks to Kirstin and Modern Goodrea..."Linda, what a nice surprise that you were able to post the last comment. You are right to thank the Goodreads team for an excellent forum they provide. I look forward to reading discussions in the future of many books.
I especially hope to see your Irish Children's Book-Sunshine and Her Big Blarney Smile , Martha Love' gut instinct book-What’s Behind Your Belly Button, and Michaels new book-Through the Mist of Faerie: A Magical Guide of the Ancient Elven, here one day as you all contributed many great comments and I am sure your books would be of real interest to so many. As professional Authors, I appreciate the time you all took to extend the discussion and for reading my book and your comments offered a door for many other questions I was sent privately. Well done!
Best of Luck,
Mamie
