Zulfiya (ztrotter) Hello, dear big book readers! Happy New Year! May your New Year's Resolutions come true in 2014! My resolution is to read more doorstops also known as chunksters!

Now back to reading business. Below is the schedule for The Once and Future King. It is only 692 pp. long, so the schedule has only one break week after Book I and Book II. Roughly, we will be reading 49-55 pages per week, so I think it is doable, manageable, and readable.

January 13-January 19 Book I, Chapters 1-5
January 20-January 26 Book I, Chapters 6-11
January 27-February 02 Book I, Chapters 12-18
February 03-February 09 Book I, Chapters 19-24
February 10-February 16 Book II, Chapters 1-7
February 17-February 23 Book II, Chapters 8-14

February 24-March 02 BREAK!

March 03-March 09 Book III, Chapters 1-7
March 10-March 16 Book III, Chapters 8-12
March 1-March 23 Book III, Chapters 13-19
March 24-March 30 Book III, Chapters 20-27
March 31-April 06 Book III, Chapters 28-36
April 07-April 13 Book III, Chapters 37-45
April 14-April 20 Book IV, Chapters 1-7
April 21-April 27 Book IV, Chapters 8-14

The leader is Kristi, and I will also attempt to read the book with the group. I am sure we will all enjoy the world of myths, legends, chivalry, romance, magic, and it will be a thought-provoking escape that will last for months:-)

Rosemary This looks great Zulfiya, thank you! I have just ordered my book :)

There is an audio version at Audible.com...

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments I don't have audible, I get mine from the library. But that's ok, I'll just keep checking the paper book out of the library :) Thanks tho!

Meg (megmarquardt) I'm so excited to re-read this book. I read it solo way a long time ago, and I can't wait to read it alongside a discussion group!

Me too! As a plus the german audiobook is incredibly good; cannot wait to relisten ;D

Gaijinmama I'm about half way through it.
It's not at ALL what I expected!
Looking forward to the discussion.

If you're still interested in getting the audio I know that Audible does a free audiobook with trial- something to think about ;)

I <3 Audible

Rosemary I just received my copy and it's 5 books, not 4. Looks like the Book of Merlyn is in some editions and not others.

Huh, I'll have to go home and see if the Book of Merlyn is in mine. maybe we can add it on the end for those who have it? I winder if it can be found as a stand alone book??

I have seen the Book of Merlyn as a stand alone book. It was the only book I could find when I was looking for TOAFK.

Victoria (vicki_c) Yes, my ebook only has 4 books.

message 15: by Kristi (new) - added it

Kristi (kristicoleman) Ok, can everyone check and see if they have the Book of Merlyn??

If not, do we want to get it and add it on as part of this read??

message 16: by Linda (new) - added it

Linda | 1425 comments I wouldn't mind adding it on to the read for sake of completion.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments So, for those of us doing the GoidReads challenge, do each of these books count separately, or are they all considered one book?

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments GoodReads* (posting from phone)

Good question! I guess if you add each book individually to your bookshelf, then GoodReads would count them individually? I have just have the one book added as a whole, so I'm assuming it would only count as one. I would be curious what other members are doing in this regard as I am doing the challenge this year.

I'll be counting it as 1 book, since that's the edition I am reading.

Makes sense - I'll do the same.

Courtney I think we should just do the main 4, every review I've seen of the 5th book said that it felt like an afterthought and wasn't as good or cohesive with the rest of TOaFK...

message 23: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Most editions on GR include the FOUR books, and only one is comprehensive and includes book V. We can stick to the traditional quartet, and then if the interest is piqued during the discussion, we might add the final book. These are my two cents.

message 24: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam (aramsamsam) Wikipedia:
"White was inspired to write this book upon determining that the key theme of Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur is to find an "antidote for war". Rather than containing a distinct plot, this book reads more like a discourse on war and human nature.

Originally submitted for publication in 1941, due to wartime paper shortages White was unable to convince his publisher to include The Book of Merlyn as part of the collected edition of The Once and Future King (which was first published in its entirety in 1958).

He nevertheless managed to salvage parts of this rejected text. While revising The Sword in the Stone for the collected edition, he adapted scenes from The Book of Merlyn. The unfortunate consequence is that parts of The Book of Merlyn appear to be rehashing things White has already covered earlier in the collected version of The Once and Future King."

So there are different versions of the books.
The Book of Merlyn was published posthumously. It bears the subtitle "The Unpublished Conclusion to The Once and Future King". I recently discovered it in my uni library and would really like to read this one, too.

Does the audible version have the 5th book?

message 27: by Sandra (new) - added it

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) Okay, I checked and it does! I just used a credit and bought it - got good recommendations.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments Okay. I just wasn't sure if it was something like The Lord of the Rings where they are three distinct books, but make up one story. Or The Chronicles of Narnia as another example. So it really is just one book.

Rosemary So the main schedule will stay with four books but those of us who want to can go on and read/discuss the fifth book at the end? I plan to read the whole of the edition that I've got, which includes the Book of Merlyn.

message 30: by Kristi (new) - added it

Kristi (kristicoleman) I'm thinking that the main schedule will stay as is, and if there is interest in the 5th book we can do a side read. That sound ok with everyone?

Funny because I thought we owned it on the kindle, but couldn't find it so I bought it. Today I stumbled across it in my Audible library! I guess I wasn't crazy after all.
