I actually found it in the YA section of the library, so I thought it was YA.

Thanks for helping me find this book series. I read them less then 4 years ago and think its a fairly new series, less than 7 years old. not sure though.
the first book sets the scene of this fictitious land where two neighboring kingdoms are constantly fighting or maybe they are friends but someone wants them to fight.
Will is the main character of the series. He is the son of the military general which is hereditary position. His father takes him to a important meeting where he witnesses something. He also meets a princess there but he is very shy as she is described to be very beautiful while the author describes Will as short, stocky, average looking.
Soon after his father dies and Will is made General.
I also remember someone being jealous of Will becoming General just because he is his father's son. Could be the second in command, but not sure.
The start of the first book also describes a witch burning. Will is against it. He helps the girl out by giving her water, or she sees him as a good soul etc. However, she gets him close to her and she whispers something in his ear and curses him. Will doesn't realize it at the time but the curse switches his soul into the body of this assassin, so the murder dies in Will's body and Will takes over the killer's body and lives.
Other clues:
1) Will has a friend who helps him. Red hair is involved. Don't remember if Will has red hair or his friend.
2) One of the bodies, Will transfers into is a woman who tries to kill him in a bath house.
3) Another body is that of woman who is a close confident of the princess.
3)Will retains all his memory as well as the memories of the body he transfers into.
4)In the last book, he transfers into the body of a mountain warlord. Horses are involved.
5) Will is described as a good man with strong principles who knows right from wrong. Appearance-wise he is short, stocky, not very good looking and probably has red hair.
If I remember some more clues, I will post them here. Hope you can help me out!
