Lying to Save Lives

I want to start off saying I love this book, so my question isn't intended to go against it. As we know not only Katniss, but other characters as well figure it's best to le to those they love or allies in the arena in order to keep them save. This took place when Katniss didn't tell Prim or her mother what was going on with President Snow's visit or anything else since then. Or in the arena when Katniss lied about knowing there's a force field surrounding the arena. There's more but to say on point my question is: Is the lying in the book really necessary?

Yes. Katniss kept the information from these people to either protect them or to protect herself if necessary.
