i think it was how it ended because the majority of the book is told through flashbacks and it goes to the present sometimes.

the first book of the series is good, but not great. the sequels i'm not sure i'll be picking them up because they try to mix paranormal and historical fiction together and it didn't end up combining well based on the reviews.
