I planned to pick up Raymond Chandler, I had not read the classics yet or George Pelacanos, I have heard he is a good modern crime writer who churns out quality novels. However with so many glowing recommendations for Robert Crais, I think I will pick up either one of his standalones or L.A. Requiem (which seems to be the high point in his Cole series) if either Chandler or Pelecanos disappoints.

Yes! I love both Crais and Connelly, but you're right -- it's important to read early the Crais mysteries with an open mind. Each book is better than the last one. And that's not something I can say about every author!

Totally agree! To me, much of the fun of reading Crais/Elvis Cole was watching Robert Crais develop as a writer. I believe that today, he stands high in the hierarchy of crime novel writers, in my opinion.
