Stupid Question

It is a silly question, but I can't let it go. In regards to Christmas at Hogwarts, who exactly places the presents in each house's dormitories?
Going off my childhood memories of these books, I would vouch that elves are used for that sort of thing. Or - as this was originally for children - are we supposed to accept the existence of Santa Claus as just yet another fantastical element? (I'm being sarcastic there; Rowling never once makes any reference to that sort of thing; I'll go with elves).
Like I said, it sounds stupid, but would anyone like to share their better-informed opinion?

It is the elves. They do all of the unseen things at Hogwarts. I believe they tell you this in the fourth book: Goblet of Fire. You know, when Hermione gets all "Elf rights" and stuff.

I think it would be the house-elves, the same ones that cook and clean in Hogwarts.

Very unlikely. Those elves sound like they are almost DNA programmed to serve honestly and well. Kreacher was the exception, and even he thought he was being loyal in his own weird way.

I believe the presents are sent by owl and then the house-elves just put them in each common room's christmas tree.

The house-elves. In the fourth book, Hermione decides to take a stand in support of the elves at Hogwarts, who work like slaves but, aren't paid at all. It is very likely that the house-elves dealt with the presents too.
