I like the half penalty idea. Are you doing that in lieu of having a new series credit, as well?

Okay, cool. Looks like I will be altering my add'l series challenge rules.I may also change the "abandoned series" rule to only getting completion points if I have read two or more of the books, but give regular points for the first book, whether I've completed or DNF'd it.
@Chrs - I really like this challenge, and I love that we can customize it to our tastes. Thank you for introducing it to me. I think it will become a regular annual challenge for me.
Glad you enjoy it, Nyssa....I'm actually thinking of further tailoring it for me. Like in getting rid of the points. They don't mean anything on my list. The credits seem a lot more useful.

I like the points though we don't really do something with them.
True. It's not like we earn anything at certain point levels. I stopped trying to earn points to buy books because I realized I was just buying the books anyway.

lol!
ETA: I set myeslf a $20 a month book buying limit.
Annnnd I just decided that the budget was $20 a month plus whatever Malazan book I can get my grubby little hands on... :-D
Points make it complicated too. It seems like every book has a "what if" statement that gives it special points, or credit against a penalty or whatnot. So you build up a bunch of points. What can you buy with them?Maybe if I'd set that up where you could start a new series every 100 points or something. But what I'm finding is that I'm starting a crap ton of 1's anyway. Nice, but it defeats the purpose of why I wanted to do this.
So I think I'll go with a straight credit system. Any book beyond #1 counts, no re-reads (for credit).
KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.
Hmm... Getting rid of the points sounds really appealing actually. Much simpler. I may have to redo my entire plan.
My challenge has been pretty much abandoned. But I'm treating 1st books like standalones, then if I like the 1st book enough I'll add the others to my list. I have a lot of 1st books to get off my tbr list. A lot. But I'm not using any kind of point system either.
Done. Check out my new post to see how I'm doing it. Pretty simple, really.I kept my goal of 24 series books (2 per month).
#1's and re-reads aren't counted towards the goal, but they don't count against me either. Like Nienna said, they work like stand-alones.
I haven't abandoned mine. I even put it on my blog. :)I really like the points but I *think* I might customize it so I can do something with the points.
But what, IDK.
Nyssa wrote: "So how would a challenge with no points work, exactly?"So basically set a goal and work towards it. You can reward yourself if you like. My own reward at this point will be seeing more than a single book on my "completed" row.
I'm on my phone so I can't see your new post properly at the moment - it kind of cuts off (a problem I've reported to GR on the past).I think I like what you (earlier) and Mrs. J suggested, which is to turn the points into something else - like New series credits.
100 seems a bit low, though. Maybe I can use 250 like I was going to for my "new purchase" challenge.
So, I read The Fairy-Tale Detectives two months ago and counted it towards my challenge. Per the request from my twin-lets, I'm now rereading it, to them. Do I count it again? I'd only be taking the reread points if I do, as I have no intention of editing or rewriting my review.
Hi everyone,Question:
I've been M.I.A for a while, resulting in about 3 months of missed series reads. Am I supposed to indicate that on my thread, and if so, how?
I don't think you need to unless it was part of your goal - but even then it's a personal goal, so you could just adjust it. I haven't been keeping up with mine either, though, so don't feel bad.

Hi Becky! :)
Yeah, my goal is/was one series read a month, but I haven't read a thing (series or otherwise) since May.
Thanks.
Hey Nyssa. Glad to see you back!Don't feel bad about the challenge. I've missed several months worth of series reads too.
I stopped doing the challenge almost immediately after I started it in January so you're doing much better than me Nyssa. :)
Felina wrote: "I stopped doing the challenge almost immediately after I started it in January so you're doing much better than me Nyssa. :)"Ditto.
Has this year been nuts for anybody else? For someone whose main hobby is supposed to be reading, I'm sucking at it.

Hi Felina!
Yes, this year has been ridiculous!

Felina wrote: "Has this year been nuts for anybody else? For someone whose main hobby is supposed to be reading, I'm sucking at it."Nope. I'm good. I guess I shoulda done the challenge. I woulda been rocking it. ;)
Felina wrote: "Has this year been nuts for anybody else? For someone whose main hobby is supposed to be reading, I'm sucking at it."You have no idea. My former boss had a major health scare late last year and closed down most of her business earlier this year. I was unemployed for about three very long months. And now I'm trying to adjust to a new job (same field/different department). And now my grandmother is having issues with her foot and she can't walk without a cane. To say it's been a year... it most definitely has.
I've been reading. But not so much fantasy. Been reading fiction/ literature/ classics.

I hope your grandma heals soon!
One series a month? A whole series? I am happy if I can finish one small book a week. I should quit my job ;)

Me too :(
So, I officially threw in the towel on this year about a month ago, but I'm very excited to try this Series Challenge again next year. Chris, are you willing to open a 2015 section and allow a few "early birds" like myself to set up our threads, please?
Wow. I saw this thread at the top of the update page and got excited because it looked like a cool new idea. Oh yeah, I started this mess. lol
Yeah, I'll set up a 2015 folder.

LOL! Thank you!!
I'll blame it on the strep that I appeared to have caught from the wife. Ugh. And I was just getting over my own cold.
Chris wrote: "I'll blame it on the strep that I appeared to have caught from the wife. Ugh. And I was just getting over my own cold."Aww! I'm so sorry!!! Does she work with children?
I hope both of you feel better sooner than later!!
My eldest and I have getting slammed by allergies right now. We're apparently both now allergic to Marigolds (who know), which bloom in October (who knew) and are quite abundant in our town!! Thing is, we've been here for 10 years...
She does, and we both work in health centers. Plus, her daughter and our grandson live with us, and he goes to daycare. The four of us have been passing around one crud or another for a couple of months.

Its one of the reasons I will no longer substitute in Kindergarten classes.
The last year that I did, I would get sick every single time, even though I wash my hands...often!!
