Lee | 939 comments I'm wondering what to do about books in a series that I don't plan on finishing. For example, I'm planning to read Interview With the Vampire. I've read it before years ago. And although I might read the first few books in the series, I have no plans to read all of them. So, I'm not going to add them to my points, but do I subtract the points for starting a new series? As is, I think I'll just treat books like this as 'non series' reads.

message 52: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Nyssa, if you're going to re-read it, you can count it that way, as a re-read #1.

Nienna, you don't have to read all of the books. Just score the ones you do read and you're good. And yes, you can call Interview a re-read. No subtracting points, at any rate.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have a question about prequel & in-between series books - how do we count those? As full books, or not at all? And what about reading order? Chronological or published? Or is that up to us?

Specifically thinking about situations like:
The Bastards and the Knives, which is a prequel to Lies of Locke Lamora.

I've read LOLL, but if I read Bastards & Knives, would I just count it as a 10-point non-first book?

message 54: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Also, Graphic Novels... OK to count as a normal book or should they be counted differently? Thinking of Sandman and The Walking Dead and Dark Tower, etc.

message 55: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Anything that is a book in a series counts, regardless of where it falls. That's why I didn't include points for the # in a series. Chronological or published order doesn't matter.

A "1st book" is more literal in this challenge. First to you, that is, the first book that is part of any series that YOU read. If you read Discworld #23, and it's the first Discworld book you've ever read, it's your 1st.

So yes, Bastards/Knives would count as a non-first since you've already read LOLL. The same as Red Seas would count.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Poor Chris, I think we've run him through the ringer with all of our oddly specific questions.

We just want to play the game correctly and earn our points fairly!
The best part is that we'll have a better idea of what we're doing when you offer this challenge again, next year (just keep this and the "Rules" thread handy)! :D

Nah... He's used to it. ;)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Heh. It's cool. The questions help me too, as some of it is stuff I haven't thought about.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Exactly! :)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Ok, what about series that we plan to abandon?

I want to finish out the first 3 books of Hounded BUT I've been told that there are characterization/back for more cash issues after that. I plan on trying that 4th book out but if I don't like it quite asap.

Since I am going into the read with the intention of quitting at a certain point...would that count as a finished series?

message 63: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Well, I'd say you'd only score the bonus for finishing a series if you get them all done. Of course, you'd get points for the individual books you finished.

And if it's a sub-series somehow, you could get that bonus.

message 64: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments ok

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Though I think I see where you're coming from. Abandoning a series crosses it off your "to-do" list as much as finishing it would. Hmmmmm....

You might could do it. It's your challenge, after all. Personally, I think it'd be cool to have a list of "abandoned/wtf was I thinking?" series as well as completed ones. heh..

message 66: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) What if you only get half "finishing" points for deciding to quit reading a series?

message 68: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments That would work. Though you can't quit twice, Nilofer. Only get the points once ;)

abandoned/wtf was I thinking?" series

OMG. Chris, you are a freaking genius!

message 71: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Chris,

Would you mind if I started a thread to start listing unfinished series so that I may get an idea of how many I have? I'd be a list only participant, for the joy of it all. I'd try to follow the rules about earning enough points before starting a new series, etc. but to be honest, until it see it all in front of me, I'm not certain how many unfinished series I have out there.

Would you mind?

message 72: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments MrsJ ;)

Laurel, go for it. The little secret of it all is that the points are window dressing. It's the list that we all are itching to play with...hehe

message 73: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Thanks Hon! I think my evening has just been planned for me :D

Whatever! I do what I want. ;)

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

Shouldn't that be 'I can have my points whatever I want'? ;)

Your reading comprehension is flawless, as usual, T. ;)

message 77: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments Ok, wierd question. I'm doing Chris's Simple Rules Option just to knock out series. Can I make an addition to the rules, since it's just me? Right now, I have my goal set as 1 series book a month. But I was wondering if I could add a 1/2pt to maybe a separate total, and if I have a bad month, I can use it as a free pass that month. Does that make sense?

message 78: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Kathy, I have a feeling some of us might switch to simple mode eventually.

But sure. Tailor it for yourself.

message 79: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm in simple mode!!!

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments Thanks, Chris! Yay simple mode! :)

Thank you for not giving special treatment to nilofers!

message 82: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Chris, are you willing to start a 2014 Series Challenge - General Discussion Thread? There are a number of good discussions going on in individual threads, and it would be cool if we could have a "community" spot specifically for this challenge.

Thanks.

I know I probably will.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Please. LOL. I see the OCD wheels turning with all of you and your list building. Does anyone think for a minute that this whole thing isn't a scheme/excuse to build many lists? Hehehe

Nyssa, I can set that up.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nyssa wrote: "2. Do Group Reads (here or in any other group) count for or against us?"

Chris wrote: "Good question on the group reads. I'm thinking we'll wave the penalty on those to encourage participation...."

If we read a group read that is the first in a series, is it automatically added to our "Already started" list, can we ignore it, or do we take the 1/2 "finished" point option for abandoning a series?

Thank you for setting up the thread! :)

message 88: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments You're welcome....

and..err....

The easiest way (I think) to do the exempt from penalty books (either group read or purchased with credit) is to just not apply the -10 penalty. Score as a series book, or if you aren't going on, you can call it a 1/2 abandoned...

message 89: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Alright... That works - Score it accordingly for reading it. No penalty.
Take 1/2 points (for abandoned series) if stopping at that one. Got it.

message 90: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Michael wrote: "Do I count it as a 6 book series, and count the re-read for Books 1 and 2?? Just looking for some guidance since it is first on the list to be started tomorrow!!."

I'd personally say, Yes! Its what I would do with any omnibus.

So you would get 50pnts for meeting your challenge (if you chose 1 book a month) plus 10pnts for rereading the 1st and 10pnts for reading another book in the series.

message 91: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, read and score them as individual books. That's how they were originally published, so I think it's valid.

That's also how I'll be reading some of the omnibus books I have.

^this

message 93: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Yes, individually is the best way to score them. You could do it either way, but might as well go for the points...

message 94: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments Whenever I read books in omnibuses, I've always listed the books individually. Part of me wasn't sure if that would be considered cheating, but it felt right. It almost felt like cheating myself if I didn't!

message 95: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Chris, can we do dual goals?

For instance, I am probably going to do a mixed goal - Read 1 series book/month OR Read 3 Graphic novels per month.

But if I read a novel AND the 3 graphic novels, would that count as 50 points each completed goal? Or would I only get 50 points once?

message 96: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments You could do that....It's creative. And yeah, you could get the 50 each time...

message 97: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Sweet! Although... That could be trouble. I can see that leading to a whole lot of new series... LOL

Oooooh, maybe I'll institute a 3rd part of my goal that says that I can only start a new series IF I have credits accrued AND I've finished off all of the currently available books in a series I'm already working on (or decide to stop reading them).

Yes, I think I'll do this.

message 98: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Wow...

Well, it's personal goal motivated, so that works..

message 99: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, I just figure that it's an additional restriction to prevent me from starting a new series every time I have 10 points to burn, and not finishing any of them, you know?

message 100: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Exactly...
