Moved to general.
This year I only participate on GR reading challenge but I'm thinking about challenging myself more in 2014. World literate sounds interesting but the only language I know beside English and Indo is French and not very good at it.

You're doing great in the Goodreads challenge. One more to go! :)In my challenge, the language a book is written is unimportant. You can read the books in translation. My goal is to get better knowledge of different countries and cultures (and stop reading always limited authors). I require writing in English because I hope that it will inspire others (and it's easier to convey a message over internet in English).
Tho I'll cheer you up in reading in French (even easy books), it'll improve your French.
Thanks! I'm trying to be sensible this year since I failed last year.
Well, if that's the case, I might give a try, I'm planning to read more European and Asian literature next year!

I entered Goodreads challenge just for the heck of it I suppose. I do like reading books from around the world (Africa/Asia in particular) but I'm not really interested in challenges. Somehow a challenge made me feel stressed, I'm terribly uneasy starting something I'm not sure capable of finishing. Ha-ha.
Nice to know, I'll look through your bookshelves. How about joining the Around the World in 80 books group on GR? For me a challenge is stressful if I have a pre-set list and need to read the exact thing. Without some kind of goal (challenge) I'm lazy to read something. I was neglecting Polish literature for years, but I started reading more when I joined challenge.
There's such a group? I'll check it out then.I do agree that group challenge is a good way to motivate yourself. It's nice to have other people to share your comments and opinions about a book.
I've only participated in the Goodreads challenges. I'm not particularly keen on thematic reading challenges. I already have so many books I want to read; if I participated in challenges, I wouldn't have time to read the ones I wanted to read. But some years back I did create a personal challenge. Because I read so narrowly (only certain authors or certain genre, and only in English), I challenged myself to read one fantasy, one nonfiction, one book by an Indonesian author, and one freebie for every four books I read. The challenge only lasted a couple of years, but it led me to sample new authors and read more widely. Now I don't have to "force" myself to read nonfiction or Indonesian books, I seek them out myself.
Femmy, what is thematic for you? A topic (for example "vampires") genre (like science fiction, nonfiction) or reading female writers challenge? Now, that was a great idea. I can relate to that. Forcing somebody (even yourself) to do something is not a good idea. I noticed that cataloguing the books I read is a great way to make me more aware of what I'm reading. And a suggestion on what I should read.
I'm only one book off my GR reading challenge. Will try to make it before the end of the year.Other than that, I didn't participate in any other challenge. I like to be able to read random books and read purely for pleasure. I'm not really good at following rules ;p
Kama, I guess challenges with specific topics or genres that I'm not interested in would throw me off. A more general one like female writers would be more appealing to me, provided I get to choose any book I want within the theme, or at least choose from a wide range of titles.
I take part in reading challenge especially in Goodreads Group that I join. Their challenge are interesting and unique, and usually run in one month. But last year, so many things happen (marriage, settle into new home), so I always left behind. That's why this year, I just join some challenge, not the monthly ones, but the yearly.I also have some reading challenges that I hosted on my blog. If you want to join as well, feel free. That also some giveaway to sweeten the challenge, lol. Just go here and here
Femmy, interesting idea!Okey, this year, for every 3 books that I read from my favourite genre, I will read 1 book from other genre. Let's see how it will turn out at the end of this year :)
Femmy, there is one challenge in 2014 on Goodreads... that totally put me off. Things like read: ya book, written originally in foreign language (wtf?!, I do that all the time, np), the bestseller on NY Times etc. It was so uninteresting for me. Femmy, you could try my challenge then. ;)
Ren, nice challenges. I'll join them. And add to my collection of challenges :D http://forculturessake.wordpress.com/...
Btw, nice blog, tho I don't really read romance books. ;)
I join 2 challenges this year besides goodreads reading challenge. One is very Indonesian because it's Indonesian Romance Reading Challenge. But the other is quite interesting and can be open for English books: Lucky No. 14 Reading Challenge. The host gives the participants 14 themes of books to read. I think it won't burden the participants since we can always adjust our choice. Here's the link: http://perpuskecil.wordpress.com/2013...
Good luck with the challenges. My friend showed me Lucky No. 14 but maybe next year. I already have 10 or 11 challenges. :D
How are your challenges? One of Ren challanges is already finished. I had fun with the names challenge, it got me to read books otherwise I'd probably not read. Actually I'm usually rather ignoring books with names in titles. But I took too much from library, surprisingly I had too little time, and I'm still reading one of the books (John Dies at the End).
With Ren's I finished 2 challenges, and I see well I took on too many challenges. :D
The most advanced challenges for me are: The Full House (9/25) and the one with Polish literature (8/12). I'm kinda neglecting my own challenges. But the problem is I got the books earlier from library and haven't read them all yet. Serves me right. :D
Are you doing well in your challenges?
OOT: Kama, which library is that? It seems like your library is an awesome one, with good choice of fiction books and a high limit of total number of books to be borrowed by one person.

Whooo, congrats Kama! :D (actually I just realized that one of my RC just end yesterday. This is what holiday did to you :/)
So funny, Ren. (the situation)Mina, I'm already back in Poland. In my district's libraries, I can get 15 books (5 books per library) for 35 days.
Ren, do you plan to write a summary post or sth like that? I decided on a new challenge. ;) Yes, really. Ok, it's a "negative challenge" because I decided to not have anything to do with USA and UK culture during May. No books, no films, no TV series, no music. I wrote about it on my blog, if somebody is interested.
No USA/UK books doesn't mean not reading in English. I have some Indian books in English to read still. And some more books. :P

I recently joined Polish literature challenge, and I'm eyeing some around the world ones. I haven't find any decent fantasy/sf yet (but not ya/na nor romance). Do you know any?
On 1st January I'm starting my own challenge, about world literature. Books can be written in any language, but the review needs to be written in English (so that's a good practice activity). If you're interested, the details are here: http://forculturessake.wordpress.com/2013/12/26/a-to-z-2014-world-books-challenge/.
