A new drabble (100 word story) of mine has been posted in Indie Book Bargains newsletter (visit their website www.indie-book-bargains.co.uk for a daily drabble and Kindle book bargains). This drabble is the first in a two-parter. You can read my other drabbles on my drabble page here:

The Life of a Prayer (Atheist Version)

From my heart comes the pain, a physical burden, too terrible to bear.

From my mind emerges understanding of my suffering and the desire to be whole once more.

From my lips issue the words of my plea, my hopes for a life reborn anew.

Through my ears I hear the words that my lips have spoken.

Through my mind I tease meaning from the memories of the life I have lived.

Through my dreams I ponder the solution to my grief.

Through the passage of time I accept what has gone and what has come and life rolls on.

Justin (justinbienvenue) A Night to Remember

I woke up to a bloody skull staring me in the face. Well it wasn’t staring back at me but you get the idea. I adjusted my eyes because I figured I was still dreaming but when I realized I wasn’t I jumped out of bed faster then I ever have, not bad for someone half asleep. I looked at the rest of the bed and sure enough the sheets were soaked in red. At the end of the bed was a note which read, thanks for a truly crazy night, had a blast -Gina. Who the hell is Gina?!

Victory Dead Ahead

I was driving around the track at a good 124mph. I was in first and loving every minute of it. These suckers are going to eat my dust as I get yet another victory, my third in a row. I cleared the checkered pathway, one lap to go. As I drove on I look to the side and noticed someone right next to me a few inches away. No way he’s passing me, no way in hell. As I speed up a bit faster the car next to me bumps me, I crash into the wall and realize I’m dead.

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 58 comments A new one from me over on Drablr, written in about 40 minutes from first idea to posting, earlier this evening.

INFO-DUMP

For thirty minutes every morning, John sat down to work on producing his novel. He found it hard, even painful, but he knew his discipline would pay off.

Tears sprang to his eyes as he imagined how wonderful it would feel when the book finally came out.

One morning, he finished creating his masterpiece.

It landed in the toilet with a splash. John stood and looked at it floating in the bowl. A 300 page paperback, embossed cover.

John nodded, and reached for the flush.

He'd always known he had a book in him. Ever since they removed his appendix.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Ha - love it Andrew - you can't beat good ole toilet humour!!

The Honest Truth

John was an honest man. If he couldn't tell the absolute truth he'd rather prevaricate. If his mates asked him, "Should we skive off for an early lunch?" John would reply, "I dare say we could."

"Do you think the team will win on Saturday John?" his pal Mike asked.

"Aye, I dare say they might," replied our original mild mannered man.

"What do you think to this weather then?" asked his mum. "I dare say it'll clear up," John ventured.

He was really stumped when his wife bought that tight fitting dress.

"How do I look?"

He daren't say!

message 611: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments That's a good one Kath, I can just hear the earful he would have gotten had he answered.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The second drabble from the Life of a Prayer pair has been posted in the Indie Book Bargains newsletter (Visit http://www.indie-book-bargains.co.uk/ to sign up for the newsletter). The first drabble was the Atheist version and can be found here along with my other dtabbles that aren't part of a longer series:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/p/1...

Life of a Prayer (Believer Version)

From my heart comes the pain, a physical thing too terrible to bear.

From my mind emerges understanding of my suffering and the desire to be whole once more.

From my lips issue the words of my prayer, my dream for a life reborn anew.

Through God’s ears he comprehends the anguish that my lips have spoken.

Through God’s great benevolence he provides comfort and hope in a world that has none.

Through God’s wisdom I understand a world greater than the darkness around me.

Day by day I am comforted and from grief’s long night dawn rises once more.

mrbooks | 2016 comments To Write

I long to write like my hero's Tolkien, King and Rowling, to spin a tale of wonder and excitement. To instill fear and anxiety, joy and wonder, longing and loss, love and hate. To have people hanging on the edge of there seat, holding there breath as the final plot unfolds before there eyes, Oh to Write such powerful words to grab someone and hold them spell bound to have there emotions crashing like waves on a beach.

You wrote about how you wish you could write like known authors and have readers hanging on your words. Which is what I did while reading your piece :-)

Kath Middleton | 245 comments One of mine today - not at all deep and meaningful!

Typos

I'm havibg a load of grief wirh my work at thr momrnt. It's dricing me ansolutrly crazy. I'm not ususlly a bad typost. I took a course in toucg typing abd I'm usually prettu fast and accurate. I blane my latest purchade. I'm too susceptoble to pressyre when I go inro a shop. I see somethong nrw and I've just got ro have it. An adbertusing executovr's dream, that's me.

Abyway, I briught my new purchasr home and unpacked it caredully.

Dratted mouse.

It keeps squeakong and runbing about all ocer the keyboard and you see thr resuilt beforr you!

message 631: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments How long did it take you to type that Kath. When I learned how to use a word processor years ago (pre computer) we had copy type off a sheet with deliberate mistakes then we could learn how to correct them. Trouble is, I automatically corrected them as I typed, so had to go back and make everything wrong again, then I could fix it all.

message 632: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 245 comments It's harder than it looks, Suze. I also tried to make sure that I typed the letter next to the one I should have, so they were feasible typos, not just random.

Unfortunately my doctor and insurance company won't let me :-(

message 634: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Alas, you think it is only women who get treated that way. Men are as often used and thrown to the side like so much refuse. We feel pain, angst, and the degradation of being used and cheated on as keenly as women do.

message 635: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Sorry, no ABC Drabble of Death this week as my Thursday was filled by other things. Normal service will resume next week :-)

message 636: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) At least you were able to learn the lesson! That story could have ended badly :-(

message 637: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Kath, I loved it, I like a challenge and have seen this type before. I find the challenge of reading them fun, unfortunately I learned a trick on reading them and now they are no challenge at all.

message 638: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments This proves a point, we are all the same inside no matter what we see on the out side. We all bleed red even the blue bloods bled red. Unfortunately, we need to teach this lesson over and over again, because human kind has a very short attention span.

John (crimewriterjm) | 1 comments A Drabble Drabble

This old guy leans over me as I’m working in my local library. He smells of beer and wet leaves. “What are you doing, buddy?”

“Writing a drabble.”

“A what?”

“It’s a hundred-word story.”

“Oh.”

He looks confused. “What’s the point?”

“Writing?”

“No – dribbles.”

“Drabbles,” I correct. “It’s fun writing them.”

“Whatever,” he says. His rheumy eyes stare at my computer. “Do you count all the words as you go?”

“Yeah – sometimes. Sometimes I check after and cut down.”

“Seems like wasting time,” he says, and wanders off.

I shake my head.

They really shouldn’t let politicians visit.

Michael Brookes (technohippy)

The ABC Drabbles of Death skipped a beat last week, but it's back with a vengence this week as we reach the letter 'J'. This one is another taken from my past and it's what I wonder went through her mind before she jumped. If you haven't read the previous drabbles in the series then you can find them all here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/p/w...

And if you're looking for more short or flash fiction then come and join the Facebook group dedicated to those forms of story telling:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/short...

J is for Jump

It’s a long way down and at the sight I almost lose my nerve. It’s almost funny really. I climbed all the way up here to make sure that the drop would kill me and now I’m afraid of falling.

Maybe this is a sign.

Not that it matters. This is the only choice left to me. My eyes fill with tears, but they are selfish tears for me alone. No-one else will lament for me.

That is the real sign for what must be done. One last moment of pain and then nothing more.

I step off the ledge…

message 642: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Life is like the ledge we titter on it wavering back and forth do we plunge in head first or do we stand there and watch it go by. Stepping off the ledge represents giving up control of our lives and giving into chance...

message 643: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) To honor a film series that is coming out soon...

I was trapped. I had been imprisoned here for what feel like weeks but had only been a few days I would imagine. For what? I did not know at first. I did not know who had captured me until I awoke this morning. I assumed it was mad men but oh how wrong I was. I got up from my quarters and as I awoke I looked past the bars and saw them and was in utter disbelief. Two guards dressed in military uniforms but the biggest shock of all was that they were not human..they were apes.

message 644: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I like it :-)

message 645: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) Since you asked Frenchie hear it is :)

Apes. That’s what they were as sure as day. I couldn’t speak for I was in awe and did not know what to think. Perhaps I was dreaming, yeah that’s it I’m dreaming. Cause after all Apes don’t dress in clothes and act like humans..do they? Where am I? As I kept thinking, my cell door opened and the two guards attached a long chain to my restraints and dragged me out of there and out into the public. As they took the chain off one grabbed my arm, “Get your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape!”

message 646: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) I was gonna end there for now, perhaps more will come in the future.

message 647: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments I like them Justin, and it would be nice to read more.

mrbooks | 2016 comments Here is a line from one of my favorite songs.

Does anyone know where the love of god goes when the waves turn the minuets into hours...

See if you can figure out what song and who the artist is.

message 649: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) After last week's rather serious ABC Drabble of Death I thought I'd go for something a little more fantastical for the letter 'K' and bring forth an old friend from legend!

If this is your first drabble of death and are wondering what the hell is going on? Don't panic. A drabble is a story which is exactly 100 words long and this series takes each letter of the alphabet in turn and I write a suitably death themed drabble. You can read the previous drabbles in the series here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/p/w...

And now a beast awakens...

K is for Kraken

From the dark depths it arose.

A thing that should not be. A creature from legend and nightmare. Yet here I stand on the deck of my trawler with today’s catch spilling from torn nets. Tentacles of fearsome size crush the boat as if it were no more than a child’s toy.

Screams of the crew and the screeching of tortured steel surround me. The spray of the sea and the sweat of my face chill my face.

The trawler snaps in two and victorious against its defenceless foe it drags me and my boat into the sun starved deep.
