Stephen, If I had any talents I might try. OK maybe one day I will. I only know sadness and lost love and alienation. You know? The real life stuff. But your encouragement is generous. You're a kind person.
Stephen,
Didn't mean for it to come across that way. I was actually flattered. In fact you gave me an idea. I'll see what I can put together.

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

A beautiful song, and one of the saddest I know. It came about when a friend of John Prine's suggested he write another song about old people and growing old, referring to Prine's song "Hello In There." If you've never heard "Hello In There," it's definitely one of the saddest you'll ever hear. Prine wrote Angel From Montgomery in response. It's often covered by Bonnie Raitt, who does a fine job, but I think Susan Tedeschi does a better job these days. Prine's idea behind Angel refers to "a song about a middle-aged woman who feels older than she is." Prine said he had this really vivid picture of this woman standing over the dishwater with soap in her hands. She wanted to get out of her house and her marriage and everything. She just wanted an angel to come to take her away from all this". She see a picture of an old rodeo and imagines a cowboy coming to take her away. Prine believes he was likely drawn to Montgomery as the song's setting by virtue of being a fan of Hank Williams. Others have said that the Angel from Montgomery was once perched atop the Montgomery Ward building in Chicago and Prine's vision came from that.

So if you're walking down the street some time
And spot some hollow ancient eyes
Please don't just pass'em by and stare
As if you didn't care
Say "Hello in there"

I always love the little Kerouac style vignettes you add to your posts Bill, they're like the liner notes for the album of your life. I'm convinced one day, however, one of them will start something like this - 'Has anyone else ever murdered someone? I remember a glorious summer in 82, driving down by the Okefenokee swamp in an old flatbed weighed down with axes and chainsaws, on my way to the annual S&M convention, when I picked up a young hitchhiker. Lovely girl, looked a lot like a young Liz Taylor...tasted exactly like chicken after I boiled her down.'
