Duncan came to a studio I used to work in called The Zoo and though I wasn't able to make it that day, I was given his guitar pick and the next day was invited as his (and Holly Brook's aka Skylar Grey's) special guest and given tix to his stage performance version of one of his newer albums backed by the San Francisco Symphony. I even worked on helping out on a song he laid down some guitars to but was annoyed when an exucutive decision was made that the guitars weren't fitting for the direction the artists were trying to go with their progressive house project. Though good friends of mine (Mikael Johnston from Mephisto Odyssey & Dave Dresden from Gabriel & Dresden aka Motorcycle) I argued that it was a big mistake and a bad decision, only later to not be surprised their entire album got shelved for good for legal reasons that were never settled and thus none of the songs were used anyway, which mostly ruined both of their careers. They shoulda listened to me ;)
BTW if you like Duncan Sheik check out James Yuill and his albums Turning Down Water For Air & Movement In a Storm ~ very similarish to Duncan but a bit more cutting edge and some of the better (mostly) lighter-hearted Indie Pop from this decade.

Thanks for the tip, Michael. I'll have a look at James Yuill. Barely Breathing was a great song. It's on my life's soundtrack from that year, but beyond that I have no knowledge of any of his other work. Wikipedia says he got into show tunes and such. He released Phantom Moon, a Nick Drake-influenced album in 2001. That's cool. And in 2013, he wrote the music and lyrics to the musical adaptation of American Psycho. Hmmmm. So, yeah. He was a one-hit-wonder. Speaking of which, anybody remember this:
Walter Egan - Magnet and Steel (1978)?

Another favorite one-hit-wonder. But what's more amazing is he's still around. Sorry if I ever doubted you Walter. He looks a little like The Joker in this video. Kinda creepy. Backup singer's hot tho.
Blind Boy Fuller - Baby, You Gotta Change

Another murder ballad. Stagger Lee or Stagolee or Stack O' Lee was, as explained by WC Handy, probably a nickname for a tall person, comparing him to the tall smokestack of the large steamboat Robert E. Lee. But there are other interpretations.

Stagger also makes an appearance in:
The Clash - Wrong Em Boyo
A great cover of The Rulers track on London Calling

A great cover of The Rulers track on London Calling" great song, album, band, album cover. I remember buying London Calling from my favorite record store "The Vinyl Solution" but Train In Vain wasnt on it, so I went back to see George the Greek who owned the place and he gave me a copy of the 45, which I've long since lost.

These guys are playing in Berlin this weekend, if only I could go...

Speaking of Nick Drake, Duncan did a pretty cool cover of River Man released on an extra disc of his included in a limited release version of his 2nd album. Duncan told my music partner that Barely Breathing kinda both made him famous but messed up his career for awhile but I don't see how it messed it up. It put him on the map imo and he ran with it. Also, he was a 2 hit wonder. I prefer his single She Runs Away, which he admitted he borrowed a lot from David Sylvian's style from his 1st album, Brilliant Trees (which I highly recommend you give a listen to especially if you like Nick Drake and Bryan Ferry, as well as his 3rd album, a thing of pure beauty and genius titled, Secrets of the Beehive). In fact, you being such a huge, knowledgeable music fan, you might have a bit of fun listening to Duncan's She Runs Away back-to-back with Sylvian's Red Guitar.
Oh! Also, I love how you said 'my life's soundtrack from that year'! I agree and might have to steal that line from you! :D

It's sad I don't have enough dollars in my pocket to buy the music of every musician I enjoy, and so, unfortunately, I'm left to judge the quality of a person's music by what gets radio play. And I know from experience that's not a good thing. That's probably why I'm still interested in music from the past. I didn't get a chance to appreciate it fully back then so I'm making up for past sins I reckon.

OMG, excellent pick, Janie. I have been a fan of Coil since they broke off from Psychic TV but never heard anything from Musick To Play In The Dark2. I just watched the video of Where Are You and both the song and video are my new favorite thing, along with Caribou's Swim and DNKL's. Warm Dark Night. Also, I couldn't help but notice that Where Are You must've influenced another fave artist of mine, B. Fleischmann on his songs, Some/Others/Husband & Beat Us (though both are more upbeat) from his album, I'm Not Ready For The Grave Yet -- which I highly recommend (as well as his Indietronica classic LP's, Welcome Tourist & The Humbucking Coil).
Thnx Janie! :]

I love that Coil song, Michael. I'm going to check out the other names that you mentioned - thanks! :)
