We were at a ZZ Top/Jeff Healey concert in late 80s, and my girlfriend's brother said "What's the matter with him, it's like he's blind." Haha

Hawkwind - Hall of the Mountain Grill

Is anbybody familiar with Timothy Leary's concept of intelligence agents whose purpose is to raise humanity on a new level of evolutionary development? He also publicised a list (it included H. R. Giger and Frank Herbert, for example). I don't know if it also mentioned Hawkwind, but they would be just THE band for this concept.

Partly. Neil wrote this in 1979 about himself and his music style becoming irrelevant and obsolete with the rise of punk and other changes in music. I think he was basically saying he'd rather die or burn out or rust or whatever at the peak of his career than to continue on producing what no one wanted to hear and die a doddering old fool. That statement was criticized by many including John Lennon, who said something like it's only music, life is all that matters. Then in 1994 Kurt dies at 27 and quotes the lyrics from the song is his suicide note "it's better to burn out than to fade away." So Neil feels like he's contributed to the death of a great young musician. Out of guilt he dedicates his album to Kurt and then starts to emphasize the line "once you're gone you can't come back" whenever he sings the song in concert. It's sad for several reasons. Kurt decides to die rather than become irrelevant. Neil feels terrible after the fact about expressing his personal feelings. And then especially sad is that anyone would rather die young at their peak than get old and be irrelevant. It's all in Wikipedia.

Thanks for the insight. I don't think Neil thinks that he contributed to Kurtz's death but it's known that he felt that way before.

About his roadie and friend. Also The Needle and the Damage Done. "Milk blood to keep from running out." Lynryd Skynyrd followed with The Needle and the Spoon. Neil writes Powderfinger and offers it to Ronnie but they die on a plane crash shortly after the release of their final album featuring Ronnie on the cover wearing a Neil Young (Tonights the Night, i think) tshirt. Some weird shite. How about something less depressing:

Neil Young - Cortez the Killer

Thanks for the book rec.

Eric Idle said "I was writing a sketch about rock musicians and I was trying to think of a name that would be so silly nobody would ever use it, or dream it could ever be used. So I wrote the words "Toad the Wet Sprocket". And a few years later, I was driving along the freeway in L.A., and a song came on the radio, and the DJ said, "that was by Toad the Wet Sprocket", and I nearly drove off the freeway. Wikipedia

Did not :-( I kinda lost track a bit into the 90's following Steroid Maximus and some others - but I did have the best track for a decade or so!

Animated series, however, I've never had anything related to track of, I'm afraid (had to Google both of those to even know what they were). It'd be fun to hear what he sounds like today though!

Thanks Janie - I said you've lot to teach me about music :)

Bingo! Some websites state that AC/DC "sampled" from ZZ Top, while the strange similarity isn't even mentioned in the Wikipedia about the AC/DC song:
