Empress (the_empress) This entry seems to be two separate books sold together. First, having an asin is wrong as this are two paperbacks, but I am wondering if they should be in the database at all. If you see the pictures on Amazon this are two separate paperbacks that have their own entries in the database.

What should I do in this case?

Thank you

Haven't seen one of those for a while. 6/11/11 we had a bad import with used print books with ASINs. Most are long gone, but if any remain, they get merged with whatever the closest equivalent is.

Got that one.

Got those.

message 6: by Gary (new)

Gary Williams | 3 comments This may or may not be exactly the same problem, but I have examples from two authors where the ISBN of the print book is being used to find the ebook at, for example, Smashwords.

First example is Divine Deception: The Will Traveller Chronicals by Robert James. I tend to buy a lot of books from Smashwords, so this is how I noticed this issue. At Amazon, it correctly takes you to the printed version.

Another example is Have Wormhole, Will Travel by Tony McFadden

Is it possible to have different formats listed differently? If not, would be preferable to default to the ebook version (but might need permission of authors before this is done)?

I can speak for Dr Robert James (my father, whome I represent at Goodreads), but not Tony McFadden.

Gary

Empress (the_empress) Not exactly the same. You just need more editions added. We prefer if you can start a new topic about it, but I went ahead and added two more for Divine Deception here. If there are more editions to be added, please post ISBN numbers.

The buy link are according to each edition ISBN and the buying options are set differently for each user. Also the second book has more editions and I couldn't find another one on Amazon/Smashwords, so again please post ISBN numbers of any missing edition.

Thank you

Gary Williams | 3 comments Thanks very much ... now I understand. Do the librarians prefer to add editions, or do you want me to source the info (now that I understand :) and do it myself? Otherwise, will provide info.

Thanks very much for your help, btw

message 9: by Ine (new)

Ine | 263 comments There's no rule about it, you are free to add editions yourself, but most librarians here like doing it for fun! So if you'd like us to do it, that's not a problem. :)

You can add them yourself to the system, but you will have to post in the group for us to combine them as it is done only manually and by librarians.

Actually, authors are able to combine (but not separate) books on their own author profile.

message 12: by Devon (new)

Devon Hernandez (devon81) | 3 comments Hi there, I'm guessing this is the correct place to request this: as I was trying to add cookbooks to a shelf of mine, I noticed that two different books are listed combined, as two editions of the same book; they are not.

This is one book: Best of the Best Volume 6: The Best Recipes from the 25 Best Cookbooks of the Year

Product Details
Series: Food & Wine Best of the Best Recipes Cookbook (Book 6)
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: American Express Publishing (October 28, 2003)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0916103838
ISBN-13: 978-0916103835

This is the other: Best of the Best Volume 7: The Best Recipes from the 25 Best Cookbooks of the Year

Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: American Express Publishing; 1st edition (September 1, 2004)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1932624007
ISBN-13: 978-1932624007

Can these editions please be separated out to different books not linked together? Thank you!

Gary Williams | 3 comments Ellie - thank you very much for your info.
Rivka - what we did was to make the kindle edition the 'main' (or default? - wording) edition, thinking that less unwitting people will be fooled when Smashwords doesn't work, than when kindle doesn't work. The issue was, really, that the paperback edition was the default edition - didn't want to scare people away from an, as yet, unknown author by the paperback price tag.

It's a work around that works for us :)
Thanks for your help.

Empress (the_empress) I'm currently on my mobile. could a librarian possibly search for the following book and check if this is a proper entry:
Review of the end of illness
by John Gains (I think).

message 17: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 31495 comments Ellie, The End of Illness does have a review by a John (surname unknown) 5 stars Mar 12 2012 and another John (surname unknown) 3 stars May 21 2012.

Not sure if one of them is the one you wanted verified, but there are 240 reviews listed for that book.

Sandra I posted it in another topic. The entry was NAB-ed.

Andrea (andrea_b) | 571 comments I was trying to ask about this in the Data Import thread but it's really the same situation that the first post here describes:

This book https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... apparently came from an Amazon import, but it seems to be a vendor listing of volumes 1 (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...) & 2 (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...) together (the ISBN is fake)... should it be merged into one of the volumes or should it remain as a separate work?

It does not seem to really exist as a combined edition, so merging into the closest thing would be the usual practice.

message 22: by Andrea (last edited Jan 28, 2014 01:12AM) (new)

Andrea (andrea_b) | 571 comments OK, merging into volume 1 then. thanks!

edited to add: the book is locked, could you please delete the edition? thanks!

Roxana (divaroxie) | 6 comments Hope my question fits here.
The books who have many volumes can be combined in one edition?

This book Cel mai iubit dintre pământeni comes in 3 volumes, that I found separately. Is it ok to combine the 3 volumes in this one? Or they need to be separate?

Thanks.

Volumes are not to be combined together. Different parts, volumes, series are not to be combined. Only editions with the same content [or are essentially the same book] are combined.

When you go to a combine page it says what to be combined:
General Guidelines

do combine:

Different publications of the same book.
Different formats of the book (hardcover, paperback, audio).
Editions/translations of the book in other languages. Even though many translations differ significantly, we've made the decision to combine them all, and have people note the differences in their reviews.

don't combine:

2-in-1 books or boxed sets that include the given book.
Cliff notes or other works about the given book.
Adaptations or graphic novelizations should not be combined with the original work they are based upon.

Please post new topic for further questions.

HTH
