Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Great list for the Slugs Nancy! I hope you'll enjoy the trilogy you're starting of with.

I also have The Golem and the Jinni on my TBR but didn't add it to the challenge because I thought it was only 486 pages. I'm so surprised by the huge amount of differences in page numbers! I get 20 or even 50 pages, but almost 400? Wow.

message 7: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Peggy - I am going to look up The Golem and the Jinni to see what Goodreads has . If I remember correctly, I looked this up at Amazon.

message 8: by Nancy from NJ (last edited Dec 24, 2013 02:00PM) (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Ok - maybe my eyes played tricks because I just looked up The Golem and the Jinni at Goodreads and yes it is 486 pages but Amazon has it at 512 so that's what I'm going to use. Hope no one has any objections.

message 9: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think in the end you have to go with the edition you actually read. If you buy a copy and it's the one with 486 pages, then it doesn't count for the challenge (unless you combine it with another one). If you read an ebook or audiobook, you should go with the number of pages of the hardcover edition.

I had a look at the other editions of the book here on goodreads and there is a 806-page kindle edition. Perhaps that's the one you came across before?

message 10: by Nancy from NJ (last edited Dec 26, 2013 07:31AM) (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) it is the one I came across but I just found this out from Amazon

The Golem and the Jinni has the following listed:

Hardcover - 496
Paperback - 512
and the Kindle edition at a whopping 819.
What ????????????

Since I downloaded this some time ago and planned to read the Kindle version, clearly there is too much of discrepancy for me to feel this is fair. And since I am involved in other challenges based on the number of pages, I don't think I'll be including this anywhere or at least not the Kindle version.

I think I may just find another book to connect with although to be honest my head hurts from trying to make connections soooooo LOL

If you have downloaded this Kindle edition: The Golem and the Djinni, published August 15th, 2013 by Blue Door, you may read it for the challenge on its own without being combined with another book. Forget about the other editions. This challenge is about the edition you read.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Ok Janice. as it turns out I decided to substituted New York by Edward Rutherfurd which the hardcover weighs in at 860 pages. And since I've owned this HC for forever, it will be perfect for me to read and doesn't disturb my next read either.

Thanks so much for putting up with me and my inane questions. I like to really be in the know and when joining a challenge I sometimes tend to overthink.

ROFL! What was my first clue?? I have a tendency to overthink things myself, so I recognize it in other people.

Just as long as you are happy with your choices, I am happy.

message 14: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am LOL too.

And yes, I am very happy about my choices. Now let's see if I can actually read any of these doorstoppers!!!

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Yes, that will be the real challenge!

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Good luck, Nancy!

message 17: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I promised myself I would spend this evening catching up on another obsession, the TV program, Scandal who for those not in the States is a political show, one filled with bribery, deceit, murder, madness, mayhem and SEX!!! I just heard that Clinton and Oprah are equally interested in this show.

But instead of doing the above,I just spent the better part of the evening pulling out all of my owned traditional books over 500 pages and will spend part of tomorrow trying to link them.

message 18: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks, Laura. Are you also participating in this challenge?

message 19: by Laura (last edited Dec 27, 2013 05:00AM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments I am, Nancy. I spent hours yesterday deciding on books and linking them. And they'll probably just change anyhow lol. My family was wondering what I was up to.

Have fun linking!

message 20: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Between watching Scandal which is something else and linking books, my husband is able to stay in his home office doing whatever for days and I don't bother him.

Ha ha.

I must admit in some cases my connections are rather strange.

message 21: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I just emptied my bookshelves and pulled out all of the books which are over 500 pages. I then placed them back on the front shelves and tried to makes some connections. I was thinking of simply saying these books' connections are that they take place in different countries around the world or they they are mainly historical fiction but as the day is going on, I'm able to find some better connections.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Nancy wrote: "I must admit in some cases my connections are rather strange."

This group likes strange.... or some of us do. :)

message 23: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Do you also like quirky? LOL

Tomorrow its supposed to rain like crazy here in NJ and I plan on alphabetizing my book closet. yes, folks I have bookshelves and also a closet in my office which was already shelved when we moved here and is perfect for my books. And I am so OCD about my books that I keep them in alphabetical order by author's names. In the last year they have become very disorganized and so a rainy day is just what I need with the TV on for background noise to sit on the floor and alphabetize my titles. Since I double the books in this closet so they all fir, I will have to leave a couple of shelves front areas for the chunkster challenge.

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Why don't you slip The Poisonwood Bible into number one spot and link it to the number 2 book (The Bronze Horseman with the connection Three word title starting with the word "the"

The beauty of slipping it into #1 is that you just shift everything down one. That would mean that you would have to switch The Goldfinch into Mickey Mouse's Marchers - unless you've already started it. If you have, it will have to stay in Slick's Slugs and you'd have to switch things around a bit.

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments If you have started The Goldfinch, you could sway it with New York without messing up your connections.

message 26: by Nancy from NJ (last edited Jan 05, 2014 03:11PM) (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks - I think I will do exactly what you suggested Janice and it really doesn't mess me up that much since I am reading both now. If I remember correctly, we can read any of the small headings in whatever order but we have to read the groups heading like Slicks Slugs and Mickey Mouse Marchers and other broader titles in the order. I'm not sure which book I will finish first but then it won't matter, right?

I must be getting better at this cause I could also use two words in the title which begin with the letter B.

I am loving this challenge and thanks so much for thinking this one up.

Yes I did sway THE Goldfinch with New York although I may read it earlier since book groups are reading it now.

You're getting the hang of it. Just let your imagination go wild.

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments You can read any of the books in Slick's Slugs in any order. But you must read each section Slick's Slugs, Mickey Mouse's Marchers etc in order. That means that you can't read any of the books you may have listed in Mickey Mouse's Marchers until you read all the books in Slick's Slugs.

Thanks again, Janice. You are really a book angel the way you and the other moderators take care of us.

message 34: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Finished my first two books which were actually two smaller ones. Continuing to read The Bronze Horseman and The Poisonwood Bible. Oh do I want to finish these two titles but I still have over half of these books left to read.

message 35: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Finished The Bronze Horseman yesterday and hope to finish The Poisonwood Bible over the weekend. Hope my next Chunkster selection are better than these two.

Hi Nancy,

I love your choices, Paullina Simons is one of my favorite authors... actually she is on my top 3.

message 37: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I also loved Paullina Simons but must admit that The Bronze Horseman isn't one of my fave books by her. I loved Tully and Red Leaves. I have three other titles to read for this challenge - the jury is out on how I will enjoy them.

message 38: by Michelle T. (new)

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments Tully have read it more than 6 times, LOVE IT!!!
Red Leaves is another one, love them so much I bought Tully twice... :D

message 39: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Michelle - when I first signed on to America Online exactly 20 years ago on Martin Luther King Day, 1994 in the midst of a winter filled with ice storms wow 20 years ago, Paullina Simons was a brand new author who had just published Tully. We found each other on one of the only book groups then at America Online and she was eager to have readers read Tully. Her publisher at that time offered a signed coy of Tully to anyone who would review it for them. And so I said yes and to this day with two major moves I still have the original book and remember fondly writing to this author.

message 40: by Nancy from NJ (last edited Jan 26, 2014 03:58AM) (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Not sure if you read anywhere why I said that The Bronze Horseman wasn't one of my favorite Simons reads. I first read it sometime ago and found it repetitious and much too wordy. I must admit that I enjoyed it more this time and so far am really enjoying Tatiana and Alexander.

message 41: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Just finished Tatiana and Alexander which again was a reread. I thought I was enjoying it more than The Bronze Horseman but in the end it was also just ok. half of the book filled in the reader as to what was going on in the first book and the second half was again very wordy. One more to go, The Summer Garden, to end this trilogy. I must say these books were quite a challenge.
