Sophia James When I first read The Girl with the dragon tattoo it blew my mind and it was only when I read the notes that I found out the author had died. It was horrible and the feeling was much worse after I had read the other two. It was probably the best trilogy I have ever read.
If someone wrote a follow-up I would read it but I don't want it to happen because I can't imagine anyone else writing the character of Lisbeth Salander.
It would be like the attempt someone once did of writing a follow-up to Gone with the wind.
The characters of Mikael and Lisbeth are so complex and well written that it drives me mad not to know what happens next but it is only Larrsen who could have told us. The tragedy almost adds to the magnificence of the books. Please leave it be!

Betsy Hetzel I agree and disagree, if I may, here. You're right that Larsson's Mikael/Lisbeth are HIS characters, created in his mind and fleshed out by his pen. However, we have seen these two develop through THREE books and have rather complete information on them and what makes them tick. Could someone else do as good a job with them? Remains to be seen.
I agree with your sentiments about this trilogy being one of the best that I've read in years, was saddened by Larsson's death, knowing that it might be the end of something that I was totally into but.... IF his notes are as complete as they say they are, why couldn't someone else pick up the thread and give it their best shot? IF it's dreadful, it will end there. IF not, long may this engaging series go on. Just my thoughts....

Sophia James You are probably right and, despite what I said, I would read any follow up. I would just hate Lisbeth to be turned into a conventional heroine though.

Betsy Hetzel Honestly, I cannot see that happening. Whoever picked up Larsson's "vision" would (have to) remain true to it. I cannot see anyone "remaking" Lisbeth into someone she is not and a "conventional heroine" she is not. In my dreams, I envision her w/ a life with Mikael :) That scene where she sees him w/ his "old" love still haunts me....

HornFan2 The problem will be his family and common-law wife. If a publisher, could get them working together and complete his unfinished 4th book. I'd pick either Nesbo or Lackberg to finish it, both are awesome writers. The end result would be like what Ace Atkins has done with Robert B. Parker's Spenser series.

Richard Penn Using the James Bond "franchise" to justify anything approaching a decent book seems disingenuous. I'm on the side of the 'let the dead rest' contingent. Silmarillion, the posthumous Frost books... none of much interest.

Sophia James I love the way the two main characters are so flawed but are still so likeable. It is a really hard thing for an author to pull off.

I think I expect that from almost every book/author I read (or at least that), and no, it's not that uncommon.

Thomas Larsson's common in law wife has written a book. I have read it and enjoyed it. It is a non fictional book about Larsson. It is available in english.

"There Are Things I Want You to Know" about Stieg Larsson and Me
by Eva Gabrielsson, Linda Coverdale, Marie-Françoise Colombani

Betsy Hetzel Thank you, Thomas, for putting us on to the Gabrielsson book about her and Larsson as I have not heard of it. And, you enjoyed it = even better !

Shane Phillips Carolyn wrote: "I won't buy the book on principle. I get so tired of the corporations trying to make money off series where the author has died. Let it be. If someone truly wants to be an author, come up with Y..."

Carolyn. What corporation? This book was commissioned by the authors family and they picked a writer to carry on the series. They tried to get the unfinished manuscript from the dead author's girl friend but its tied up on legal issues because of Sweden property laws caused by his death threats. Since they could not they commissioned their own based upon the authors 10 book outline.

Andrea Leoni I read ravishing reviews on this sequel. I might fall for it and buy it even though I was reluctant to do so

Devin To all the people that decided they would much rather boil their heads than read the sequel because "huff huff huff, it couldn't possibly hold a candle to Larsson's work", I'm 46% through and I have to say I feel very badly for you and those subjected to the consequences of your decision making skills. In this matter, you've made a colossal mistake by depriving your life of this enriching literary bonne bouche. Now now, no need to stress over it. Just do yourself and your loved ones a favor, get that mole on your back checked out, eat more cruciferous vegetables, and read this book.

Betsy Hetzel Oh, Devin, I can't wait for the sequel to come out which I believe will be released on Sept. 20. Lucky you that you got an advanced copy!
BTW, you are talking about THE GIRL in the SPIDER'S WEB, eh?

Devin Betsy, good news, it's already out in the U.S. and UK.

Shane Phillips Got it from my local library.

That's great, I hope you enjoy it.

@ 70 = Devin - I own the trilogy and the swedish dvd series -- love it all - AND I fully intend to read Spider's Web and plan on enjoying it as much as I have the 'Millenium Trilogy' thank you!

Richard Penn One of the reviewers of my sci-fi book said my teenage hacker characters was 'Lisbeth Salander with the serial numbers rubbed off,' as if I'd broken some unwritten rule. My character had a similar attitude and dark past, but I gave her a fake Caribbean accent and (I thought) some fresh ideas. I'm not sure where the ethical boundaries lie, but I certainly didn't use the same name.
