Jim Swike I did not read the first book, I found it hard to follow the Poet's references to the first book? Anyone else?

David Freas Nope.
I read this one first because at the time it was the next one in the Harry Bosch series.
But it did motivate me to read The Poet to get those references you mentioned.

Jim Swike Yes Quiillracer I agree. I also want to read the Poet now as well.

Pete Wong the Poet is much better than this book.
If you read the Poet first, do not read the Narrows.
If you read the Narrows first, it is a bit unfortunate.

JackM I bought them both at the same time, I was looking for some more Bosch and picked up The Narrows. On the cover it said " Sequel to the international bestseller The Poet" so as there were a few other Connelly's as well as The Poet, I picked it up. I didn't realise till I read it later that Bosch wasn't in it.

Gyula Sure you don't understand some of the references, but you still can enjoy The Narrows. But if you can, read The Poet first.

Laymon Scott This was my first Connelly book ever, I've since read everything he's written. I definetely wouldn't start with this one, as it does refer to other episodes, but it did make me an instant fan of the author.

Silver Pistol This was my first book of Connelly. Great piece of fiction. I have read it twice and now i want to find ''The poet''. I want to learn more of the past work of Backus.

Jess Payot It's not recommended to read The Narrows first if you're planning to read The Poet, it will spoil crazy plot twists in the later part of the latter. Remember, The Poet is one of Connelly's best novels.

Valerie Theisen Yes, although I did not read the Bosch series in order, I will say that reading the poet was necessary before reading the Narrows, of all of his books, this was the only time I really felt that there was a prerequisite for this one.

Valerie Theisen I will say that after both the Poet and the Narrows, and with all of the psychological profiling going on, that he would have had more analysis of Backus's psyche, like why?
