Wesley | 3 comments I recently agreed to review an ARC for an author. He asked for a review after I read the book and wrote the review. I read the book and wrote the review, sending him a copy as he requested.

I recently got an email from the author "suggesting" changes that I make. He takes out huge chunks of my review and adds a bunch of stuff that I didn't write. So now the review is hardly anything that I wrote and it's not an honest reflection of my feelings of the book. (I feel like I was very even handed and even generous of my review).

I don't know what to do about this. I feel like I'd lose integrity if I posted this review that the author basically wrote. Should I send the book back with a note about how I'm sorry that it didn't work out?

Help! And thanks!

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) Personally, if it were me I'd post the review you wrote originally. That's extremely presumptuous on the author's part. If you didn't like the book, you should say so and why. Why would anyone want to read an author's review of his own book?

Rea Nicole ✰ (regannicole) I would kindly state to the author that your review is your opinion and yours alone- if the author isn't pleased with the review then I would suggest that you wouldn't post it. I would not under any circumstance post a review with an author re-write- its highly unethical, if others know they might not trust your opinion and won't read your future reviews, plus I'm pretty sure if you post it with the author's words its plagiarism. An author should be aware of this *facepalm*

Skjam! | 335 comments Wow, that's presumptuous. Authors are allowed to "quotemine" reviews for advertising purposes, using only the portions that make the book sound good. But under no circumstances are they allowed to *add* words to a review.

Wesley | 3 comments I'm glad everyone is having the same reaction as I had. Part of me was worried I was overreacting due to bruised ego! I honestly don't want to post the review (the one I wrote, without his edits) at all because I don't want to give him an his pretty lackluster book any publicity!

Michael Long (mplong) I'd post the review as you wrote it and move on to the next book..and don't bother writing the author again. This author is insane.
