Did you know that Mark Twain was self-published?

His publisher did not desire to publish "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," which Twain had worked on and put aside for seven years. Consequently, Twain separated from his publisher and initially sold the now renown classic door-to-door as a subscription.

The first edition of "...Huckleberry Finn" appeared on February 18, 1885. By May of that same year, Twain had sold over 51,000 copies. Currently, this classic is being sold in countless editions and formats. I wonder would Twain would think about his book being on Kindle? Hmmm...interesting how books outlast their authors.

Lesson to be learned:

Authors: Believe in yourselves and take a leap of faith. Your dreams must be made and followed by you first and foremost.

Readers: Judge an author by his or her writing and not by the publisher...or shall we say...the non-publisher in certain cases.

Maria | 4 comments Thanks for sharing that Taylor. There are so many other similar stories of world famous authors starting out as self-published or being rejected on numerous occasions by publishing houses, yet for some reason people still think if we are self-published authors then there must be something wrong with our books! I wish people would start thinking for themselves instead of waiting for a publisher to tell them what is good and what isn't. It's very frustrating!
