HomeInMyShoes I read George R. R. Martin hard at work on the new book and suddenly have to check my calendar if it was April 1st.

No, that's when they'll be announcing its release.

It's still like that. I'm too embarrassed to actually post everything I'm currently bouncing between. My method of picking a book to read is to throw a bunch of books at the wall and see which sticks....each day.

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments Wait, I think I've read that one...

That cartoon describes exactly why I avoid all of that subgenre. Well, that and the fact that I've never much dug dystopiae/post-apocalyptiana (no, those aren't words, but they should be).

message 1574: by Tessa (new)

Tessa in Mid-Michigan (asata) But, but, but--there are so many really good dystopian books! Just avoid the YA and romance ones, and you should be ok.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I'm writing one about WW3 that leaves most of the population zombies who sparkle when they fall in love with werewolves while vampires are at war with a young autistic boy and his group of sad misfit followers who are finally saved by an ex-navy seal and his love who joined Delta Force but had carried a torch for him since they had been separated during high school when his abusive parents put him in a military school to keep them apart...

But I'm stuck for a title.

Oh after the boy went to military school she had then been sent to a girl's school that was secretly a covert spy agency.

Me either.

I just read one where the zombies were not one of the MCs and I was able to finish it. The rest of them? Squick me out and i can't read them.

message 1579: by Tessa (new)

Tessa in Mid-Michigan (asata) Thanks, Mike, for the laugh. Sounds about right. I still can't believe I read Warm Bodies AND saw the movie. Although it was better than some I have read, I confess.

message 1580: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Warm Bodies bothered me mostly because I felt the Romeo and Juliet parallels were *so* forced, and the world-building was kinda weak and inconsistent. (I haven't seen the movie, just read the book.)

The thing I actually remember it for most, though, was the big "controversy" when it came out because the author was seriously pissed off that book stores were shelving it as YA...

message 1582: by Jay (new)

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments The only YA dystopia that I dug was the Hunger Games series, which I came to through Battle Royale.
I find most dystopiae boring, and the same goes for post-apocalyptic fiction as well. I dug The Stand and the Fallout games and 28 Days Later and... that's about it.
And I am so frigging tired of zombies...

Really? I'm pretty sure they were teenagers. But I was talking about the Shakespeare play - haven't seen or read Warm Bodies.

Yup. LOL. So true.

But, I just can't understand someone remixing R&J and then getting mad it was under YA.

ETA: Because R&J do dumb ass kid stuff and to force a parallel means the new characters have to do dumb ass kid stuff.

message 1587: by Felina (new)

Felina Warm Bodies is fantastic for the first half then really creepy and falls apart during the second half.

I like R&J...just not as romance, lol.

When I was still a teen, it was soooo romantic. Either that or the incredibly cute ass student teacher we had. YUM! We made that poor guy so uncomfortable. I can't imagine what being in a classroom with 15 or more 14 year old girls - teaching them Romeo and Juliet - felt like. Probably put the poor guy off teaching, lol.

We all made eyes at him basically every day. I seem to recall lots of giggling, too.

That is certain to be a best seller. Be sure to pretend to be a female author, but pretending to be maybe a man by using just your initials.
