Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments The thing is...female villains are always beautiful in movies, comics, TV shows, books...everywhere. I mean almost every novel where you first meet the "femme fatale" you get some monologue like "she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen"...

I mean I was just wondering.

With the femme fatale archetype, it's because of temptation. The protagonist allows his groin to overrule his sense, and is thus led to his doom. Beauty makes sense there.
Movies and TV have issues with hiring ordinary looking women for ANY role, villains included.
The video game industry has MASSIVE sexism problems, gamergate being just one recent example.

Really, though it's common to raise issue with the sexism and the female being objectified, you bring up a good point. It's the man the most often ends up looking like a dumbass, due to his own weakness.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MrsJoseph wrote: "Maybe I'm not making myself clear. Reading is my entertainment. It is what I do for pleasure. It is also what I do when I want to escape things. That means that I turn to reading specifically when things are bad in my life. So, yes. I want to avoid that shit. Life is bad enough right now. It's a little insulting to call it "infantilizing" - it's allowing me to make a choice and I am then free to exercise that choice or not. "

I don't think I'm making myself clear either. (I tend to have the same kind of issue with my boyfriend all the time, where I'm talking about a greater scope of things than he is, and we don't see eye to eye because we're not talking about the same things.)

I'm not saying that you should not have the choice of what to read for entertainment. Nor am I saying that you not wanting to read about rape or abuse or whatever is silly or wrong or anything. You're entitled to read whatever you want to read and I fully support that, as well as being able to know what is in what you're interested in. I just think that it should be more individualized for you, rather than blanket warnings.

My issue is with the TREND and SCOPE of trigger warnings, and how, in my opinion, they are refocusing responsibility away from the individual and onto the entity making the content available, or onto society. Yes, I think that's infantilizing. To me, that's an assumption that people have to be protected from content by some arbiter who presumably knows better what people are able to handle.

My issue is exactly the fact that we are all different and unique, and there's an infinite possibility of potential triggers. Who makes the call as to what should be warned? How specific does it need to be? Where do the warnings stop? Do we need to start warning that there will be warnings which might contain triggery words? I'm not even being facetious or sarcastic - this is a legitimate question because the whole thing just seems like a slippery slope.

I just don't think that trigger warnings on content are the way to go about allowing people to make the choice as to what to consume.

Tessa, review floating is a common thing you might see on GR where somebody writes a review and posts it. They then later "edit" and submit it again so that it will float to the top of the status updates. This is done to increase the number of "likes" they could get on the review, as they float it for more people to see it.

Oh. Thanks.

Only time I've done that is when I've noticed an error of some sort (usually typographical in nature) that was egregious enough to either change the meaning of the review or just bug the ever loving life out of me.

message 1516: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments It's also done when you find a typo or error when looking at it again...

message 1519: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You can not float them by unchecking the "add to my update feed" box when you save them after making changes.

message 1520: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Yeah, I usually uncheck the box for minor changes, but I purposely resend the review for major ones. Just didn't realise it was a "thing".

message 1521: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I generally don't think about that, or see why it's a thing. (Well unless it's being done on a daily basis). I just updated an old review that someone "liked" and it brought my attention back to it and I fixed a couple of things. Thus I'm like being sensitive.

Sorry.

A review update/fix is one thing. We're talking about the folks that intentionally repost a review 20 times a day without changes for the sole reason of gleaning more "likes".

I know. I read what you said the first time. I ws responding to those who were explaining how not to "review float". I was also stating that it never occurred to me that people "review-floated". No need to bang your head on the desk.
Obviously there are massive communication issues here today.

Now, wait a gosh darn minute! Pussycats?!? Did you just call Carolina Pussycats???

I give credit where it is due. Your number 1 defense in the league is an title well placed. The Denver D not only mauled our offensive line making Cam eat turf and shutting down both our running and passing game, but BOTH of your touch downs were the result of huge defensive plays.

Had it not been for the awesome Denver D, Carolina might well have earned their 1st Super Bowl victory . We may have been trampled, but we remain predatory Panthers. Rawr!

Yes, our D was crucial, and was a lesson hard learned two years ago when Seattle torched us.
