Scarred for life.

If it makes it any better, I don't look at J-Lo the same, either. O_O

message 1411: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Me either. I can't take her seriously in anything. As soon as I see her cast in something, I'm like "Why?"

At this point, I think she's just famous for being famous. Like Paris Hilton.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I'd never heard of "Gigli"...I sort wish I still hadn't.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm trying to hold out judgement of Batfleck, though I'm not a fan, generally.

But I've never seen Gigli.

And I didn't think he was terrible in Daredevil. I mean, it wasn't a good movie, but I didn't think *he* was terrible in it.

I'm actually more bothered by the casting of Luthor, tbh.

That, and, well, I've never been a Superman fan to begin with... and while Man of Steel was certainly better than the thing that came before it, I'd never say it was great, so...

You know when WW gets released, it's OVER. I was bouncing in my seat watching the trailer.

SO going to see that opening day. Shit, I might play hooky and go during the day so I can spread out with my snacks and talk back to the screen.

WW and I'm *thinking* about Suicide Squad. I'm interested to see what they do with Harley Quinn.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments A lot of GR reviews should be re-titled 'spoilers.'

message 1433: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments She was actually warning the reader and was vague. But I've read enough of the book to figure out some of what she was alluding to.

message 1434: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I hate warnings... I think they are so spoilery and it often puts me off reading a book when I see them. I don't want to know if the dog dies, or if there's abuse or sexual violence or if there's foul language or anything else. I wish all those warnings could be spoiler tagged. That way if people WANT to know, they can look, and if I DON'T want to know, I don't have to have someone else's opinion about what might offend or traumatize me shoved in my face as part of a book description.

I do put trigger warnings in/on my reviews but I don't hint around as to what its related to. Unless I'm spoiling the hell out of it and it doesn't matter at that point, anyway.

I think they are important, though. Cause the BS pops up in the most odd of places.

Perfect example: my stepfather died 3 months ago and my grandma is in the hospital right now. Yesterday I REALLY wanted something super light and maybe even funny: I needed a pick me up and my current reads were too heavy.

I ran across an anthology touting "21 Brand New Stories of First Love." Sounds light, right??

Read a couple, nothing new. Then I run across one where the MCs are high school students in foster care. (view spoiler)The end.

Considering my mood, I REALLY didn't want to read anything that sad. I would have desperately thanked someone for warning me of that so I could have avoided it. I don't think I can read the rest of the anthology at this point. But I'm reading something else lightish so I'm good.

Nyssa | 2023 comments (((Hugs))) Mrs. J.

message 1440: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MrsJ, I'm not saying you shouldn't be able to be warned if you want to see them, but when they are included in book descriptions (my real pet peeve), I wish that there was a section specifically for that and that they were hidden for spoilers.

Reviews are different - and I generally don't read them if I haven't read a book, so I don't mind them so much there.

PS, I'm sorry for your grandpa and hope your grandma is OK. *hug*

message 1441: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Feb 11, 2016 02:31PM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I put spoiler warnings...and I've gone so far as to ask, "IF THE DOG DIES". Because, "IF THE DOG DIES", in general I don't want to read the book. I mean people can be dropping right and left, BUT NO DOGS.

message 1444: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I agree, Becky. What I was getting at was that since I'd read 3/4 of the book I made the mistake of venturing into review land, knowing that many nonspoiler spoilers abound.

So yeah, it was my Gump moment of the day.

message 1447: by Jay (new)

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments In my reviews, I don't do spoilers or trigger warnings, nor do I do much in the way of plot description. I look at reviews as general impressions and feelings, the rest is for discussion threads. If I had a blog, I would probably go further in depth there, but I don't anymore, nor am I in a hurry to start one again.
My condolences, Mrs. J.

message 1448: by Jay (new)

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments Even for visual media, imagine how ruined Deliverance would be with a trigger warning.
All of these things take away from shocks, surprises and twists, which is a shame. I don't think we should know exactly what's coming every time. Entertainment should not just be TV dinners. Yes, that should be an option, but not the option.

message 1449: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I leave that up to the person. Some people actually look for spoilers. I use spoiler tags in my reviews if I think someone may want to know. I'll often also make an extra note if I'm hiding a major spoiler. I generally skip spoiler tags in reviews I read I have a "to be read" list I'll probably never finish so I often go and see what people I've agreed with before think of a book. I have "trigger" things I'd like to know.

Sometimes I'll got to friends here on GR who've read a book and ask if it turns out to be more a romance than an action read. If I'm already down or depressed I want to know the level of emotional hit I'm going to take sometimes.

Different readers look for different things.I've always said that reviews are subjective. A review is what I think of a book, but I also want someone who reads it to be able to get an idea of what they're picking up. If you read many of my reviews then you may come to realize that you either usually agree or disagree with me. Either would help you decide.

LOL

^This

I think triggers and their effects are different for every person. I'm a firm believer in "knowing thyself." Some people can get the shock/trigger/surprise and not get too bothered by it. Depending on the trigger, that shit will stay in my head for days/weeks, popping up at the most random of moments and destroying my mood. Or I won't be able to get it off my mind at all and I'll lay awake at night dwelling. I don't need that in my entertainment.
